Abstract

The invention relates to a system (EST) comprising a motor (MOT) that generates exhaust gases (EG) resulting from a combustion involving hydrocarbons and oxygen. A catalyst (CAT) depollutes the exhaust gases (EG) in order to emit depolluted exhaust gases (EF). A probe (OS2) measures a concentration of hydrogen in the depolluted exhaust gases (EF) leaving the catalyst (CAT). A diagnostic module (DIA) observes a richness condition where there is a lack of oxygen in the exhaust gas (EG) in terms of stoichiometric ratio. The diagnostic module (DIA) determines a depollution capacity of the catalyst (CAT) from the hydrogen concentration measured when the richness condition applies. Such a system enables the depollution capacity of the catalyst to be determined in a relatively reliable and precise manner, and the user to be warned, if necessary, that the system is, for example, too degraded.
