  • the apparatus aspect of the invention provides a security box comprising a box and a lid which swings about a horizontal axis between an open and closed position, the lid being attached to the box by an offset hinge assembly, which further comprises a pair of box hinges attached to the box and to each other by a rod or tube, and a pair of lid hinges connected to the lid and to the box hinges, whereby the lid slides to effect a throw of the hinge assembly and move the lid from an unlocked to a locked position, the hinge assembly being rendered inaccessible and therefore protected by the closed lid in the locked position.
  • the perimeter of the box and the perimeter of the lid may be of channel section in order to overlap and prevent access to the hinge. The overlap reduces the opportunity to pry open the lid.
  • the lid may be heavy and therefore requires effort to move in any direction. Accordingly a first gas strut may act between the box and lid to assist opening and a second gas strut acts to assist locking.
  • the struts thrust in opposite directions, the first swinging the lid from horizontal to upright to give access to the box interior, the second pushing the closed lid horizontally to reach the lock position.
  • Manual locking may involve passing a padlock through the accessible eye of a latch, the rest of the latch being in the interior of the locked box.
  • the same knob or handle used to push and pull the lid may turn a fastener which has a curved track and a pin thereby drawing the lid in the slide phase to the locked position and releasing the lid when the knob is reversed.
  • the fastener can be locked by fixing a lock in a position which obstructs the path of the pin or a crank extending from the knob. This is an inexpensive addition.
  • the box may have a pair of inclined ramps at or near the box perimeter and the lid may have a pair of skids which project into the box interior and by sliding down the ramp when the lid closes impel the lid to a horizontal pre-lock position ready for manual locking.
  • Both skids may be shaped as a hook so that sliding the lid horizontally toward the hinge assembly causes the skid to engage the reverse surface of the ramp again improving resistance to prying.
  • Figure 1 is a diagrammatic side view of a variant with a handle in the lid for enabling the operation to supply the slide motion by push/pull.

  • the underside of the door 16 has a pair of downwardly facing hooks 156 which are intended to slide down ramps 158 when the lid swings to the closed position.
  • Contact between the arcuate edge of the hook with the ramp acts to rotate the hinge assembly impelling the lid toward the front of the box.
  • the front flange 72 clears the upstand 4 and the lid lands on the horizontal part of the upstand.
  • the hooks lie in advance of the ramps and this clearance motion is aided by gas strut 160 which acts between the underside of the lid and a mount located 150mm from the hinge assembly.
  • gas strut moves over centre and pushes the lid to the pre-lock position shown in Figure 2. Locking the box occurs when the lid is moved from the position shown in Figure 3 to the position shown in Figure 2.

Abstract

L'invention concerne un caisson de sécurité en tôle métallique destiné à être utilisé dans des usines et des dépôts, doté d’un couvercle rattaché au caisson par un ensemble charnières décalé, une paire de charnières de caisson étant rattachées au caisson et entre elles par une tige ou un tube et une paire de charnières de couvercle étant rattachées au couvercle et aux charnières de caisson, ce qui permet au couvercle de coulisser à l’aide du débattement de l’ensemble charnières afin de déplacer le couvercle d’une position déverrouillée à une position verrouillée, ledit ensemble étant protégé par le couvercle lorsqu’il est verrouillé.
