Description

"Adaptor device for a machine for preparing and dispensing beverages obtained by means of infusion of a powdery substance".
*****
DESCRIPTION
The present invention relates to an adaptor device for a machine for preparing and dispensing beverages obtained by means of infusion of a powdery substance.
In particular the invention relates to an adaptor device for dispensing beverages obtained by means of infusion of a powdery substance contained inside a sealed capsule.
In the present description reference will be made for the sake of convenience of illustration to a machine for dispensing coffee and to a capsule containing coffee powder, it being understood that the invention is not limited to machines and capsule for dispensing coffee.
Different types of capsules and different types of machines for dispensing coffee exist according to the present state of the art. The present invention relates in particular to professional machines, i.e. machines which are commonly found for example in bars and which generally do not envisage the use of sealed capsules containing coffee powder.
Coffee machines for professional use dispense a beverage obtained from the percolation of pressurised hot water which flows dirough a quantity or "dose" of coffee powder which is contained inside the filter in turn housed inside a filter holder and which is pressed. The coffee powder is produced in most cases as and when needed from previously roasted coffee beans which are ground. As the water passes through die coffee powder, its pressure diminishes and the beverage emerges from special openings in the bottom of the filter holder.
Particularly finely ground roasted coffee offers a resistance to the percolation water such as to allow extraction of hydrophobic and hydrosoluble substances.
An important factor for enhancing die taste of the coffee-based beverage is, as is well known, the freshness of the roasted mixture. In particular, it is widely known that, after opening of a package containing coffee beans, prolonged exposure of said beans to the ambient air causes oxidation with a consequent deterioration (mould formation) affecting the substances contained in the beans, which in turn alters the taste and results in the production of a smaller amount of cream.
The same thing happens in the case of packets of ready-ground coffee which are commonly sold for domestic use.
Patent application WO 2004/087529 in the name of the same applicant describes a single-dose capsule comprising a sealed moulded-plastic casing.
The capsule is divided into two chambers, the upper chamber of which contains the dose of coffee powder and has a bottom wall which has orifices communicating with the lower chamber which is in turn closed, like the top wall of the upper chamber, by a piercible sealing foil
By means of piercing of the top sealing foil, pressurised water at the desired temperature is supplied to the upper chamber containing the coffee powder and at the same time, by means of a suitable punch, a spout is created in the bottom foil, just before percolation of the beverage through the communication orifices between the two chambers of the capsule commences
The beverage flowing out of the orifices fills the chamber with a turbulent motion which facilitates the formation of an emulsion and therefore the characteristic foamy or "creamy" texture of the coffee. The beverage is dispensed directly into the cup or other container without passing through the channels of the usual dispensing spout.
The object of the invention is to overcome the drawbacks which arise in known coffee machines, in particular in professional coffee machines
A first task of the present invention is to provide an adaptor device for a machine for dispensing a beverage using a powdery substance contained inside a sealed capsule.
A second task of the present invention is to provide a device for using the capsule of patent application WO 2004/087529 in a normal professional coffee machine.
The object and tasks of the present invention are achieved by means of a device according to Claim 1.
" The further tasks of the present invention will become clear from the detailed description below, provided by way of a non-kmiπng example, of a number of embodiments with reference to the accompanying drawings in which-

In Fig. 1 the following are specifically defined:
- a longitudinal direction and plane as a direction and plane parallel to the direction of dispensing of the coffee; and
- a transverse direction and plane as a direction and plane perpendicular to die longitudinal plane and therefore perpendicular to the direction of dispensing of the coffee
The device according to the invention relates essentially to an infusion unit comprising an assembly 16, usually known as body unit, and a removable filter holder 15 with a bottom dispensing duct or hole 17.
Parts which are functionally and construcπonally similar to those of conventional machines will be described in brief since they are well known to persons skilled in the art.
The coffee machine to which the invention is applicable is a machine which allows preparation of at least one dose of coffee at a time, where "dose" is understood as meaning the beverage which can be obtained by means of dispensing, for example equivalent to an amount sufficient for one or two cups of coffee
In particular, said machine comprises a structure housing a boiler suitable for heating the infusion water to about 800C - 900C at a pressure of about 9 bar.
The boiler is usually arranged so as to be in fluid communication with die body unit
16 via pipes 14. In particular, the pipes 14 extend within a diree-dimensional space inside the body unit \β and therefore both in die longitudinal plane and in die transverse plane, consequently, in the longitudinal plane according to Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 only two sections of said pipes 14 are visible.
The bottom part- of the body unit 16 has, formed therein, a seat 18 for the filter holder 15, which is defined by a side wall 20 and by a circular- shaped upper wall 22.
The wall 22 is provided with a threaded seat 28 in the centre of the wall and holes 24 which establish fluid communication between the external environment and the pipes 14.
A substantially circular-shaped diffuser 30 is rigidly fixed onto said upper wall 22 and has, formed in the centre thereof, a flared through-hole 32 for receiving a screw (not shown) so that it may be screwed into the threaded seat 28 of the upper wall 22.
The diffuser 30 is defined by a top side 34 which faces the upper wall 22 and a bottom side 36. In particular the top side 34 makes contact with the upper wall 22 only by means a peripheral circular rim 38.
Said diffuser 30 is of the known type and is provided with a plurality of small holes (not shown) directed longitudinally and suitable for the through-flow of the infusion water.
The peripheral circular rim 38 is provided with a groove 39, also in the form of a circular rim, and having the function of a seat for a seal 40 arranged between diffuser 30 and upper wall 22 of the seat 18.
The upper wall, opposite the outer diameter of the diffuser 30, is provided with a groove 26 in the form of a circular rim having an inner diameter equal to the outer diameter of the diffuser 30 and having the function of a seat for a filter-holder seal 42.
One of the possible capsules suitable for use with the adaptor device according to the invention will now be briefly described; for a more detailed description reference should be made to PCT patent application WO 2004/087529.
With reference to Fig. 4, the capsule 58 comprises a polypropylene casing 60 with a slightly frustoconical form. The casing 60 has a continuous perimetral top edge 63 projecting outwards and a bottom edge 64. The top edge 63 and the bottom edge 64 are suitable for being sealed in a known manner by means of piercible sealing foils 66, 68 made of aluminium or plastic.
A wall 70 divides the internal volume of the casing into two chambers: an upper chamber 72 and a lower chamber 74.
The upper chamber 72 situated between wall 70 and top foil 66 is designed to contain the coffee powder.
The inner wall is provided with a plurality of communication orifices 76, around a central cusp 77, being divided into segments separated by radial ribs 78, for fluid communication between upper chamber 72 and lower chamber 74.
The lower chamber 74 is suitable for collecting and conveying the percolated beverage, as will described below. For use of said capsules, according to the invention a removable adaptor 80 is arranged inside a cavity 82 of the filter holder 15.
The removable adaptor 80 according to a first embodiment of the invention, shown schematically in Figure 9, comprises a capsule container 84 and piercing means 86.
The container 84 is designed with a cup-shaped seat 88 of circular cross-section suitable for containing the capsule 58 described above, i.e. having an inner diameter corresponding to the outer diameter of the capsule 58, and also having a bottom wall 92. In particular, die diameter of the seat 88 will be greater than the maximum outer diameter of the casing 60 (excluding the top edge 63) of the capsule 58.
The bottom wall 92 has, formed therein, a circular opening 90 positioned so as to be substantially concentric with the axis of die container 84 and having a smaller diameter than the dispensing hole 17 of the filter holder 15.
The bottom 92 has an outwardly convex surface.
In particular the convex surface is provided with a locating surface 94 in a peripheral position, being substantially flat and in die form of a circular rim, suitable for engagement with a flat surface 96 formed on the inner surface of standard filter holders 15, also in the form of a circular rim.
The outer side surface of the container 84 has, formed therein, a groove 98 which has a rectangular cross-section in the longitudinal plane and has the function of a seat for a seal 100 shown in Figs. 1 , 2 and 3.
The seal 100 therefore acts between the outer side surface of the container 84 and the inner side surface of the filter holder 15.
The engagement between the removable adaptor 80 and the capsule 58 is performed between the annular surface 97 of the container 84 and the continuous, perimetral, top edge 63 of die capsule 58 since the latter projects in the transverse direction. In particular, according to a possible embodiment of the present invention, the bottom edge 64 of the capsule 58 does not come into contact with the wall 92 of the container 84.
In accordance with a second embodiment, shown in schematic form for example in Figures 11 and 12, the bottom 92 of said capsule container 84 is provided with a concave surface 91 in the direction of the circular opening 90, suitable for causing the beverage which is to be dispensed to flow towards this circular opening 90. Moreover, the bottom 92 is provided with a recess 93 which is formed next to the side surface of the container 84 and is suitable for engagement with the bottom edge 64 of the capsule 58 when it is inserted inside the seat 88.
As shown in Figures 11 and 12, a seal 95 may be arranged between:
- an annular surface 97 of the container 84, having a substantially transverse extension, situated opposite the top perimetral edge 63 of die capsule 58 when inserted, and - the bottom side 36 of the diffuser 30.
The seal 95, which acts between the annular surface 97, side surface of the perimetral top edge 63 of the capsule 58 and diffuser 30, ensures that the pressurised water from the diffuser 30 does not reach the bottom 92 of the container 84.
According to a further aspect of the present invention, which is shown schematically in Figures 11 and 12, the capsule container 84 may form a single body with the filter holder 15. In this way it is possible to achieve a further advantage: the coffee machine for professional use is equipped with two different filter holders 15: a first filter holder 15 designed to be used in a conventional manner with coffee powder and a second filter holder designed to be used with capsules (58).
The bottom 92 of the container 84 houses piercing means 86 engaged with the circular bottom opening 90.
Said means 86, in accordance with a first embodiment shown for example in Figs. 10 and 13, have substantially the form of a hollow cylindrical pin 101 with an internal cavity 103 closed at one end 104 which, in the operating position, projects inside the container 84 over a predefined height. The pin 101 may be provided with an outer threading, for engagement with a corresponding threading provided on the opening 90 of the container 84.
The end 104 is also provided with a piercing tip 108, in a substantially longitudinal direction, suitable for piercing the film 68 situated on die lower chamber 74 of the capsule 58 described above.
In accordance with a first embodiment, the end 104 is closed in the longitudinal direction, i.e. does not allow fluid substance to flow out in this direction, but has at least one lateral hole 106 which is formed on the end 104 and is designed to establish fluid communication between the inside of the container 84 and the bottom dispensing hole 17 of the filter holder 15.
The means 86 have a base flange 109 for engagement with the circular bottom opening 90 of the container 84.
In an alternative embodiment shown in Fig. 10, the circular bottom opening 90 of the container 84 has a diameter greater than the outer diameter of the means 86, with a narrowed portion on the inwardly directed side.
Relative locking in position of the piercing means 86 and container 84 may be performed, for example by a fastening element 110 which is engaged by means of an outer thread formed on the means 86, as shown in Figure 10.
In an alternative embodiment, the fastening element 110 is arranged in die manner of a seal between the piercing means 86 and the circular opening 90.
In accordance with a second embodiment of the piercing means 86, shown in Figures 14 and 15, these comprise a cylindrical body 101 with an internal cavity 103. The piercing means 86, at the end 104, are provided with a piercing tip comprising
- a first, substantially cylindrical, hollow element 105; and
- a second, substantially conical element 107, directed during operation towards the inside of the cup-shaped seat 88, having a diameter with a base smaller than or equal to the diameter of the first element 105 and arranged with its base on a base of the first element 105. The internal cavity 103 of the cylindrical body 101 also extends inside the first element 105
The first element 105 and the second element 107 are provided with at least one lateral hole 106 having an elongated form in the longitudinal direction, each of said holes extending along the first element 105 and at least along a part of the second element 107.
In particular, considering also Figure 15, it can be noted that along the first element
105, viewed in a cross-sectional plane, the lateral holes 106 have the form of a circle segment with an amplitude a of between 30° and 50°. The holes 106 are preferably four in number and have an amplitude a of between 35° and 45°
As indicated above, the holes 106 extend partially also along the second conical element 107. In particular, the profile traced by said holes 106 in a cross-sectional plane will be a portion of a circle segment having as sides,
an inner circumference arc 114,
two radial segments joining the ends of said arc 114 with the side surface of the second element 107.
In accordance with the embodiment shown in Figures 14 and 15 the profile traced by the holes 106 along the second element 107, viewed in a cross-sectional plane, comprises.
an inner circumference arc 114 with a diameter equal to the diameter of the cavity 103; and
radial segments joining the ends of the arc 114 with the outer surface of the second element 107, superimposed on those of the circle segments along the first element 105.
As for the first embodiment of the means 86 described above, the means 86 have a base flange 109 for engagement with the circular bottom opening 90 of the container 84.
In accordance with a possible embodiment a threading may be provided on the outer surface of the pin 101 for fixing the means 86 on a corresponding thread provided in the region of the circular bottom opening 90 of the container 84.
In a further embodiment, shown for example in Figure 12, the container 84 and the piercing means 86 may consist of a single body
In accordance with a first embodiment of die present invention, piercing means 45 suitable for piercing the top film of the capsule 58 indicated above and described in patent application WO 2004/087529 are provided. With reference to Figure 7, these means comprise a body 115 having an operating surface 117 The operating surface 117 is provided with a plurality of piercing spikes 119 suitable for piercing the top sealing foil 66 of the capsule 58 The piercing means may be arranged on the machine using fixing means which are well known to the person skilled in the art. In alternative embodiments they may be arranged for example alongside the usual presser for pressing the loose quantity of coffee powder or simply they may be held and operated using one hand.
It is possible to provide an embodiment in which these piercing spikes 1 19 are movable between a first position where they project from the operating surface 117 and a second position where they do not project from die operating surface 117 The advantages of this embodiment are therefore evident: in fact the first position may be used for piercing the top foil 66 of the capsule 58, while die second position may be used for normal pressing of the loose coffee powder, i.e when not contained inside a capsule.
In accordance with an alternative embodiment of the present invention, the bottom side 36 of die diffuser 30 acts as a seat for piercing and dispensing means 46.
The means 46 described in the following embodiment are suitable for piercing the capsule indicated above and described in patent application WO 2004/087529.
With reference to Fig. 5 and Fig. 6, the means 46 comprise a top surface 48 in die form of a circular πm, associated widi die bottom side 36 of the diffuser 30, and a bottom surface 50. The top surface 48 is provided widi a groove 52 in the form of a circle πm, suitable for engagement with a seal 55 for ensuring sealing between die said associated surfaces.
The same top surface 48 is also provided with a circular lowered portion 54 forming a chamber 61 for the fluid, which is bounded at the top by the bottom side of the diffuser 30.
According to one possible embodiment, it is envisaged using a seal 59 between the bottom side 36 of the diffuser and side surface of the means 46.
Fixing of the means 46 to the diffuser 30 is performed using for example two dirough-screws (not shown) which engage with die flared through-holes 56 and with seats (not shown) formed in the diffuser 30.
Moreover, the device 46 is provided widi at least one through-hole 53 such as to allow fluid communication between the chamber 61 and the external environment. In die embodiment shown in Fig. 5 the holes 53 are diree in number and are arranged substantially at die vertices of an equilateral tnangle, the centre of which coincides widi die centre of die circular recess 54. This configuration is particularly suitable for homogeneous distribution of the hot water.
The bottom surface 50 of the means 46 is provided widi a plurality of piercing spikes 62 with a conical and/or frustoconical form and respectively a base or larger base associated widi said bottom wall 50.
The advantage of diis embodiment is therefore evident: preliminary initial piercing of the capsule is not envisaged, but this piercing is performed at the same time as mounting of the filter holder 15 on the body unit 16.
The method of mounting the adaptor device and operation of the adaptor device according to the invention will now be described in detail.
The step of mounting the adaptor device according to the invention is very simple and quick and does not require particular equipment which are not already needed for normal maintenance of professional coffee machines. In fact, it is sufficient to insert within the filter holder 15 the piercing means 86, comprising the seal 100, inside the seat 98.
In accordance with the embodiment which envisages the adaptor 80 fixed to the filter holder 15, it is merely required to replace the filter holder 15.
In the same way the means 86, in the case where they are not fixed to the adaptor 80, must be mounted, using the methods previously indicated, within the circular opening 90 of the adaptor 80.
In the case where the piercing and dispensing means 46 are provided, the seal is provided on the seat 52 of said means 46. With the filter holder not inserted, the piercing and dispensing means 46 are fixed to the diffuser 30. Fixing between the two elements may be performed in a different manner, for example in accordance with that described previously.
According to an alternative embodiment of the present invention, a diffuser which already incorporates the piercing and dispensing means 46 may be provided, or the two parts may for example be fixed in any other known manner.
Then the seal 26 is arranged inside the seat 26.
Operation of the coffee machine is entirely similar to conventional operation and will be described below.
In accordance with a first embodiment of the invention, the capsule 58 is positioned inside the filter holder 15 and the capsule is pressed against the plurality of piercing spikes 119. The filter holder is fixed to the body unit 16 and the piercing means 86 of the removable adaptor 80 create a spout in the bottom foil of the capsule 58.
Hot water is then supplied inside the capsule. Following percolation the beverage starts to flow out of the orifices 76 of the capsule 58 in the random manner described in patent application WO 2004/087529.
The beverage then flows down through the dispensing hole or duct 17 of the filter holder 15 until it reaches a container/receiving vessel (not shown).
In the case where the piercing and dispensing means 46 are provided on the body unit 16, the capsule is inserted inside the filter holder 15 and the latter is fixed as is usually performed when the quantity of substance is not contained inside a capsule.
Fixing of the filter holder 15, as is well known, combines, together with a rotational movement, a translational movement such as to move the filter holder 15 towards the body unit 16, in this way the piercing and dispensing means 46 project inside the cavity 82 of the filter holder 15
Therefore, the approaching movement of the filter holder causes the top piercible sealing foil of the capsule 58 to come into contact with and be pierced by the piercing and dispensing means 46
At the same time, the piercing means 86 of the removable adaptor 80 form a spout in the bottom foil of the capsule 58
Hot water is than supplied inside the capsule via the holes 53 in the piercing and dispensing means 46 Following percolation the beverage starts to flow out of the orifices 76 of the capsule 58 in the random manner described in patent application WO 2004/087529
The beverage then flows down through the dispensing hole or duct 17 of the filter holder 15 until it reaches a container/receiving vessel (not shown)
The advantages which can be achieved with use of the adaptor device according to the invention are therefore clear
The coffee dispensed according to this method, and therefore using the capsules and the adaptor device according to the invention, retains unaltered the aroma of freshly roasted coffee In particular, and with reference to the capsules described in WO 2004/087529, said capsules may be sealed in controlled-atmosphere conditions, which constitutes a major advantage for maintaining the aroma over time
A second advantage achieved with use of the adaptor device according to the invention is the possibility of preparing with the same machine coffee derived from different blends, as well as different soluble beverages, such as tea, herbal infusions, barley or soup, using the same device With the device according to the invention it is possible, moreover, to dispense beverages, for example different blends of coffee, without replacing any part of the adaptor device In fact the amount of residual product which remains on the piercing means 86 after dispensing of a first beverage is extremely small and does not affect substantially the flavour of a second beverage dispensed, in particular in the case where the first and second beverages are of the same type, for example two different blends of coffee
Moreover, since the coffee contained in the capsule is already ground and weighed, the possibility of using the capsule containing coffee in professional coffee machines ensures a uniform delivery of the product into the cup In fact, as is well known, the quality of the coffee is essentially dependent also on the machine operator who, by modifying the grinding, the quantity and degree of pressing of the powder, is able to vary the flavour of the beverage
The methods of installation described above are such that the device may be used with any coffee machine which envisages the use of a filter holder
With regard to the embodiments described above, the person skilled in the art may, in order to satisfy specific requirements, make modifications to and/or replace elements described with equivalent elements, without thereby departing from the scope of the accompanying claims.
