Description

Method for manufacturing a paper cylinder comprising a thread and paper cylinder manufactured with the method
The invention relates to a method for manufacturing a cylinder essentially constituted by paper material, the cylinder comprising a thread. The invention relates also to a cylinder manufactured with the method and to a cap comprising such a cylinder.
Screw caps, such as for closing off jars for jam, jars for preserved food and the like are known and widely used. Such caps are mostly manufactured from plastics or from metal.
Paper caps are often used with packages such as cups for icecreams, soup cups, cups for instant noodles, containers for candy, potato chip containers, etc. Paper has a number of advantages over plastic or metal. It is a lesser load to the environment, is better degradable or reusable and the material is to a large extent recyclable. In addition it is considerably cheaper and it is more simple to process. However for screw caps paper has hardly been used up till now. An important cause of this is that paper screw caps are considered to have a too low strength and therefore to possess too little holding strength. When paper is mentioned here, also composite forms of paper are meant such as paper board, cardboard and the like, as well as paper which comprises one or more layers of other material, such as a plastic foil or an aluminium foil.
It is a purpose of the invention to provide a method for manufacturing a paper cylinder with a thread which has a satisfactory strength and thus sufficient holding strength. This purpose is reached by a method according to claim 1.
The invention thus comprises a method for manufacturing of a cylinder composed essentially from paper material with an internal cylinder face and an external cylinder face, the cylin- der comprising a continuous or an interrupted thread that protrudes from either the internal cylinder face or from the external cylinder face. The invention further comprises a cylinder manufactured with this method. The thread can be applied by treating and deforming a paper cylinder, such as using a rolling tool. The desired strength can for instance be reached by a proper choice of the kind of paper and the thickness of the cylinder. The strength of the thread can be increased considerably by applying a flat layer of material such that it adheres to at least a part of the other of the internal cylinder face and the external cylinder face. At a threaded paper cylinder accord- ing to the invention in this preferred embodiment to the other side containing the thread, a layer is glued. By doing so the formed thread will be retained when it is put under load and will therefore withstand larger loads. If it concerns an internal thread, the flat layer is on the outside of the cylinder and with an external thread the flat layer is on the inside of the cylinder. The thread can be a continuous thread or can be interrupted and thus be formed from parts of an imaginary continuous thread.
In a further preferred embodiment of the invention the flat layer is formed by a second cylinder which fits to the cylinder in which the thread has been applied and these cylinders have for instance been glued together. This layer can be a paper layer but it is also possible that the layer is a foil, for example a plastic foil. In a preferred embodiment a threaded cylinder according to the invention is used in a screw cap. With the manufacturing of paper cups a starting point is usually a ring shaped paper cylinder, and a flat round paper disc. These are then joined together to a paper cap in a way that is generally known to the average person skilled in the art. By now choosing as the ring shaped paper cylinder a paper cylinder according to the invention comprising a thread, in this case an internal thread, a paper screw cap is obtained which in the preferred embodiment also has a smooth external side because of the flat layer which has been glued onto it. Such a screw cap will have sufficient strength for many applications.
In a method according to the invention a starting point is a flat paper cylinder, with an internal cylinder face and an external cylinder face, the cylinder having been obtained with a method that in itself is known. Subsequently a continuous or an interrupted thread is being applied, which protrudes from one of the internal cylinder face and the external cylinder face starting from a flat cylinder from mainly paper material.
This applying of a thread comprises the following step: - weakening the cylinder at a position which marks the contour of the thread. The weakening can take place for instance using a shaped rolling tool and rolling the cylinder under pressure and in such a way pressing the thread into the cylinder. Apart from the rolling tool the thread can also be pressed into the cylinder with a pressing tool, wherein the thread is pressed into the cylinder between a suitable die and a mould. The thread can also be applied by milling away a part of the surface of the cylinder, and applying an axial load to make the marked thread protrude outside the cylinder face. In a further step of the method according to the invention in which the thread is further reinforced, subsequently a layer of material is applied to adhere to the other face than the face from which the thread protrudes.
The invention will now further be explained by the de- scription of some embodiments of the methods according to the invention and the resulting threaded cylinders according to the invention, as well as a crew cap according to the invention, with reference to the drawing, in which:
- fig. 1 is an elevation of a cap according to the in- vention;
- fig. 2 is a cross section to a cap according to the invention, manufactured according to a first embodiment of a method according to the invention;
- fig. 3a and 3b show details of the embodiment of fig. 2;
- fig. 4 is a cross section through a cap according to the invention, manufactured according to a second embodiment of a method according to the invention;
- fig. 5 shows details of the embodiment of fig. 4; Fig. 1 shows an elevation of an embodiment of a cap 1 according to the invention. The cap 1 comprises a cylinder 2 and an upper surface 3, both from cardboard. Cylinder 2 comprises parts 4 of a non-continuous thread. Cylinder 2 and upper surface 3 are attached to each other using a method that is known in it- self, and which comprises for instance deep drawing of a disc, placing the disc in a ring or cylinder, applying glue and curling the edges of ring and disc. Such curled edges are visible in figs. 2 and 4. It is pointed out that although a ring or cylinder 2 comprises a curled-up edge, this ring is a cylinder com- prising a thread according to the invention. This irrespective of the method used for joining upper surface 3 and cylinder 2 to screw cap 1.
Now some examples of methods according to the invention for manufacturing a continuous or an interrupted thread or part of a thread in a cylinder of e.g. cardboard will be reviewed. In both cases the un-worked cylinder can be produced using a method that is known as such, such as winding one or more strips of cardboard around a mandrel of a spiral winding machine and glue these together. In such a way mostly an endless cylinder is manufactured, which is then cut into cylinders of a desired length with a cutting tool .
As a first example of an embodiment of a method according to the invention for manufacturing a cylinder according to the invention from paper material and comprising a thread, fig. 3a shows the end of a cross section of a cardboard cylinder 5. In cylinder 5 at the location where an internal thread or part of a thread is intended, at the outside a weakening is milled away in the form of a groove 6. This groove 6 then extends over the area of the cylinder 5 where an internal thread is desired. By now subjecting cylinder 5 to an axial compressive load, the remaining material at groove 6 will protrude inwardly and form a thread 4, see fig. 3b. At the same time groove 6 closes and forms an essentially flat outer wall of cylinder 5. To reinforce the thread 4, at the external face of cylinder 5 a layer 7 is glued. This layer 7 can also be formed by a cylinder 7 which fits without play to cylinder 5. After hardening of the glue a useful cylinder 2 comprising a thread 4 is obtained, which is suitable for further processing to cap 1.
As a second example of an embodiment of a method ac- cording to the invention for manufacturing a cylinder according to the invention from paper material and comprising a thread, fig. 5 also shows the end of a cross section of a cardboard cylinder 5. From the outside at the location where an internal thread or a part of an internal thread is desired in cylinder 5 a weakening is rolled with a suitable rolling tool in the shape of a cavity 8. Such a rolling tool is for example formed by two profiled rolls between which the cylinder is being rolled under pressure, wherein the profile of the rolls corresponds to the desired profile of the thread. This cavity then translates into a thread 4 at the inside of cylinder 5. It is also possible to press the thread in the cylinder using a suitable die and mould, Just as in the previous embodiment for reinforcing the thread 4 at the outside of cylinder 5 a layer of material is now glued. This layer of material 7 can be also formed by a cylinder 7 which fits without play to cylinder 5. After hardening of the glue a usable cylinder 2 comprising a thread 4 is thus formed which is suitable for further processing to cap 1.
Although above only some examples of embodiments of the invention have been shown and reviewed, the invention is not limited to these, but comprises all forms and variants which fall under the claims belonging to this invention.
