Definitions

  • the present invention relates to naturopathic medicine and, more particularly, to flower essences-based compositions for the treatment of mothers and babies.
  • Oxytocin one of the major hormones synthesized in the hypothalamus, plays a major role throughout the labor and birth process. Before birth, oxytocin is responsible for uterine contraction which is important for cervical dilation, and during the advanced stages of birth, oxytocin causes contractions. It also stimulates the milk letdown reflex in lactating women, and plays an important role in establishing maternal behavior.
  • Adrenaline (epinephrine) is secreted in response to threatening, exciting or environmental stressor conditions and has an inhibitory effect on oxytocin release.
  • High levels of adrenaline during labor and birth may cause distress to the unborn baby, create a sense of panic in the mother and cause contractions to stop or to slow down, thus stalling the progress of labor.
  • Endorphins are calming and pain-relieving hormones produced in reaction to stress and pain. Women may enhance their body's production of endorphins and oxytocin during labor and birth by staying relaxed, confident and secured.
  • the physiological, emotional and physical state of a woman before, during and after the labor and birth process is therefore strongly affected by hormones.
  • Dr. Grantly Dick-Read an English obstetrician, suggested that a woman in a state of fear tends to become more tense and as a result of that, experiences more pain during labor.
  • This Fear-Tension-Pain syndrome may cause a decrease in blood flow from nonessential organs, including the uterus, as the body prepares for a fight-or-flight response.
  • Dr. Grantly Dick-Read developed a HypnoBirthing technique to overcome the fear of labor, facilitating the mother to access a deeply relaxed state enabling her body to work naturally through labor and birth. In his book "Birth Without Violence", Dr.
  • Frederick Leboyer a French obstetrician asserts that a sensitive style of care respectful of the natural process, and a tranquil atmosphere at the time of birth would help the baby to be born with a minimum of trauma. This may be achieved by a relaxed mother, gentle lighting and a warm bath that welcome the newborn by mirroring his prenatal surroundings. Dr. Frederick Leboyer further states that birth without violence has far-reaching implications for improving the quality of human life physically, emotionally and spiritually. The role of birth trauma in causing anxiety neuroses was studied by Sigmund Freud's discipline, Otto Rank.
  • naturopathic therapy describes a therapeutic approach that combines modern science and traditional natural medicine and which focuses on the mutual relation between the body and soul as a means for curing.
  • the naturopathic therapeutic approach thus generally employs methods which are aimed at triggering the body's inherent capability (physical, mental and emotional capabilities) to self-recover from injury and illness.
  • Naturopathic therapies include, for example, homeopathy, hydrotherapy, aromatherapy, acupuncture, herbalism and many more. These therapies are often combined with other methodologies such as nutrition and nutritional additives, enhancing body-soul self-awareness, therapeutic exercise, manual therapy, and education.
  • Homeopathy is a therapeutic methodology developed in Germany about 200 years ago, which focuses on treating the cause and not the symptoms of a medical condition.
  • homeopathic remedies there are over 3,000 homeopathic remedies, all being produced from animal, herbal and mineral sources.
  • Homeopathy can be classified as classic homeopathy and modern homeopathy.
  • Classic homeopathy is based on treating the cause if illness with a single agent.
  • Modern homeopathy utilizes formulations that combine numerous homeopathic remedies, each having a different activity, so as to achieve a synergistic therapeutic effect.
  • Herbalism is a form of naturopathic therapy that utilizes herbs that exhibit characterizing therapeutic properties, basically due to therapeutically active ingredients therein.
  • the herbs can be classified by their activity, for example, as immunomodulators, as anti-viral and/or anti-bacterial agents, as affecting the hormonal balance and/or system, as neuromodulators, etc.
  • Dr. Edward Bach a physician, bacteriologist and homeopath, developed the Bach flower remedies, a form of naturopathic medicine. His research is described in his books “Heal Thyself” and "The twelve Healers and Four Helpers". According to the Bach approach, a complete self-help system consists of 38 essences, prepared from 37 flowers of wild plants, shrubs and trees, plus one from rock water. These essences are widely recognized as Bach flower essences.
  • the flower remedies do not address the disease itself but rather treat the person's mental, emotional or psychological problems, tendencies and imbalances, such as, for example, fear, anxiety, depression, effects of post trauma, etc.
  • Bach flower essences are also known to be beneficial both during labor and postpartum in helping both mother and newborn baby to adjust to each other and for the mother to overcome the physical exhaustion of labor.
  • An exemplary essence composition is Rescue Remedy, a composition comprising five Bach flower essences: Star of Bethlehem, Rock-Rose, Cherry Plum, Impatiens and Clematis. Rescue Remedy is marketed as a stress relief formula, and can be used, inter alia, to help restoring a state of calm during and after labor and birth and may also be used to calm the newborn child.
  • Balancing Blooms® which is a combination of six different compositions, each comprising a different combination of Bach flower essences. Balancing Blooms® is designed to balance the negative feelings often associated with the pressures of modern life and is also useful in pre and post natal stages to balance the emotional changes associated with pregnancy, birth and motherhood. Both examples involve remedies that address a broad spectrum of symptoms and are not targeted specifically for treating newborn babies and/or women before, during and after giving birth.
  • naturopathic compositions are also described in the art. These include, for example, the Mother & Baby Kit, manufactured by the South African Flower and Gem Essences. This kit includes two compositions: Birth essence and Parenting Essence. According to the South African Flower Essences website brochure, Birth essence is for treating the mother from the last trimester of pregnancy until after birth and for treating the baby, whereby the Parenting essence is for parenting successfully.

Abstract

This invention describes a kit comprising at least two naturopathic compositions selected from the group consisting of a composition for treating a condition associated with emotional stress prior to labor, a composition for treating a condition associated with emotional stress during labor and birth, a composition for treating an emotional condition after birth; and a composition for treating a birth trauma of a newborn baby

Description

A MOTHER-BABY KIT FOR TREATING EMOTIONAL CONDITIONS BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER GIVING BIRTH
FIELD AND BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to naturopathic medicine and, more particularly, to flower essences-based compositions for the treatment of mothers and babies. Oxytocin, one of the major hormones synthesized in the hypothalamus, plays a major role throughout the labor and birth process. Before birth, oxytocin is responsible for uterine contraction which is important for cervical dilation, and during the advanced stages of birth, oxytocin causes contractions. It also stimulates the milk letdown reflex in lactating women, and plays an important role in establishing maternal behavior.
Adrenaline (epinephrine) is secreted in response to threatening, exciting or environmental stressor conditions and has an inhibitory effect on oxytocin release. High levels of adrenaline during labor and birth may cause distress to the unborn baby, create a sense of panic in the mother and cause contractions to stop or to slow down, thus stalling the progress of labor.
Endorphins are calming and pain-relieving hormones produced in reaction to stress and pain. Women may enhance their body's production of endorphins and oxytocin during labor and birth by staying relaxed, confident and secured.
The physiological, emotional and physical state of a woman before, during and after the labor and birth process is therefore strongly affected by hormones.
By observing laboring women, Dr. Grantly Dick-Read, an English obstetrician, suggested that a woman in a state of fear tends to become more tense and as a result of that, experiences more pain during labor. This Fear-Tension-Pain syndrome may cause a decrease in blood flow from nonessential organs, including the uterus, as the body prepares for a fight-or-flight response. Dr. Grantly Dick-Read developed a HypnoBirthing technique to overcome the fear of labor, facilitating the mother to access a deeply relaxed state enabling her body to work naturally through labor and birth. In his book "Birth Without Violence", Dr. Frederick Leboyer, a French obstetrician, asserts that a sensitive style of care respectful of the natural process, and a tranquil atmosphere at the time of birth would help the baby to be born with a minimum of trauma. The role of birth trauma in causing anxiety neuroses was studied by Sigmund Freud's disciple, Otto Rank. Yael Eitan-Schieler, a social psychologist, suggests that postpartum depression may be viewed as a stress crisis which is induced by several biochemical, social and psychological factors and hence, that dealing with the stress factors before giving birth may facilitate stress management after giving birth (see, for example, http://www.gozalim.co.il/Htmlpage/bpregnancyd.asp?nam=38&opendiv=hatzeg9). In recent years there has been a growing interest by the public in naturopathic medicine as a form of treatment of various conditions.
As used herein and is well-known in the art, the phrase "naturopathic therapy" describes a therapeutic approach that combines modern science and traditional natural medicine and which focuses on the mutual relation between the body and soul as a means for curing.
The naturopathic therapeutic approach thus generally employs methods which are aimed at triggering the body's inherent capability (physical, mental and emotional capabilities) to self-recover from injury and illness.
Naturopathic therapies include, for example, homeopathy, hydrotherapy, aromatherapy, acupuncture, herbalism and many more. These therapies are often combined with other methodologies such as nutrition and nutritional additives, enhancing body-soul self-awareness, therapeutic exercise, manual therapy, and education.
Homeopathy is a therapeutic methodology developed in Germany about 200 years ago, which focuses on treating the cause and not the symptoms of a medical condition. Homeopathy (homo = similar; pathos = pain) is based on a theory according to which an agent involved in the appearance of certain symptoms in a healthy subject can be utilized to treat these symptoms when given to a subject suffering from these symptoms, in its homeopathic form (namely, highly diluted). To date, there are over 3,000 homeopathic remedies, all being produced from animal, herbal and mineral sources.
Homeopathy can be classified as classic homeopathy and modern homeopathy. Classic homeopathy is based on treating the cause if illness with a single agent. Modern homeopathy utilizes formulations that combine numerous homeopathic remedies, each having a different activity, so as to achieve a synergistic therapeutic effect.
Herbalism is a form of naturopathic therapy that utilizes herbs that exhibit characterizing therapeutic properties, basically due to therapeutically active ingredients therein. The herbs can be classified by their activity, for example, as immunomodulators, as anti-viral and/or anti-bacterial agents, as affecting the hormonal balance and/or system, as neuromodulators, etc.
Dr. Edward Bach, a physician, bacteriologist and homeopath, developed the Bach flower remedies, a form of naturopathic medicine. His research is described in his books "Heal Thyself" and "The twelve Healers and Four Helpers". According to the Bach approach, a complete self-help system consists of 38 essences, prepared from 37 flowers of wild plants, shrubs and trees, plus one from rock water. These essences are widely recognized as Bach flower essences. The flower remedies do not address the disease itself but rather treat the person's mental, emotional or psychological problems, tendencies and imbalances, such as, for example, fear, anxiety, depression, effects of post trauma, etc. These essences are usually taken orally as drops; however, they can also be effective when applied on the skin, used in drinking or bath water, used in a spray mist or as food additives. Bach flower essences are also known to be beneficial both during labor and postpartum in helping both mother and newborn baby to adjust to each other and for the mother to overcome the physical exhaustion of labor. An exemplary essence composition is Rescue Remedy, a composition comprising five Bach flower essences: Star of Bethlehem, Rock-Rose, Cherry Plum, Impatiens and Clematis. Rescue Remedy is marketed as a stress relief formula, and can be used, inter alia, to help restoring a state of calm during and after labor and birth and may also be used to calm the newborn child. Another example is Balancing Blooms®, which is a combination of six different compositions, each comprising a different combination of Bach flower essences.
Other naturopathic compositions are also described in the art. Additional examples include "Pregnancy Support", by Alaskan Essences, a remedy consisting of 8 Alaskan flower essences, indicated for use throughout pregnancy and birth; "Mother and Child Set" by Horus Flower Essences, a kit containing 27 separate flower essences, indicated for the treatment of mother and child; and "Bottlebrush", by Australian Bush Flower essences, which contains a single essence, and is indicated as a remedy for pregnant women and new mothers.
While some of these remedies offer a treatment for a broad spectrum of symptoms by one composition such as "Pregnancy Support" and "Bottlebrush" others such as the "Mother and Child Set" are specifically designed for the treatment of mothers throughout the different phases of pregnancy and birth and for treating babies. However, the "Mother and Child Set", for example, consists of 27 separate essences designed for individual or combination administration, making its utilization inconvenient and cumbersome.
While naturopathy offers a wide range of remedies for the treatment of emotional and physical conditions sustained by women in the various stages of labor and birth and their babies, a simple kit combining flower essence-based compositions and directed for a combined mother-baby treatment has not been described hitherto. Thus, women, before, during and/or after giving birth, that are interested in naturopathic treatment, have to obtain various remedies, each targeting a condition that may arise in one or more of the different phases of the labor and birth process, which makes the treatment process confusing and cumbersome. A woman in labor, going through the physical pain and the emotional turmoil, should not have to sort out dozens of bottles in order to find the appropriate combination of remedies to treat her condition. Furthermore, a hysterical baby should not have to wait while his caretaker is trying to figure out which remedy is the one suitable for soothing the baby. There is thus a widely recognized need for, and it would be highly advantageous to have, a kit that combines flower essences-based compositions for the treatment of both newborn babies and mothers before, during and/or after giving birth, devoid of the above limitations.

The present invention is of a "Mommy Baby" kit that combines flower essences-based compositions, which can be utilized for the treatment of both newborn babies and mothers prior to, during and/or after giving birth. The present invention is further of methods of treating women prior to, during and after giving birth and of treating a newborn baby, which utilize these flower essences-based compositions. Specifically, the compositions and kits described herein may be used as naturopathic remedies in the treatment of one or more emotional conditions of a woman prior to, during and after giving birth and in the treatment of a birth trauma of a newborn baby. The principles and operation of the kits and methods according to the present invention may be better understood with reference to the drawings and accompanying descriptions.
Before explaining at least one embodiment of the invention in detail, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited in its application to the details set forth in the following description or exemplified by the Examples. The invention is capable of other embodiments or of being practiced or carried out in various ways. Also, it is to be understood that the phraseology and terminology employed herein is for the purpose of description and should not be regarded as limiting.
As discussed hereinabove, pregnant women going through the different phases of labor and birth en route to become mothers, often go through an emotional turmoil and physical exhaustion, mostly stemming from changes/imbalance in hormonal system, affecting the progress of the labor process and their ability to establish maternal behavior. Moreover, newborn babies are subjected to birth trauma in leaving their mother's protecting womb and entering the outside world. Flower essences, and particularly Bach flower essences, a form of naturopathic remedies, are well known in the treatment of a person's mental, emotional or psychological problems, tendencies and imbalances. Various flower essences are also known to be beneficial both during labor and postpartum in helping both mother and newborn baby to adjust to each other and for the mother to overcome the mental and physical exhaustion of labor.
While naturopathy offers a wide range of remedies for the treatment of emotional and physical conditions sustained by women in the various stages of labor and birth and their babies, a simple kit combining flower essence-based compositions and directed for a combined mother-baby treatment has not been described hitherto.
Thus, women, prior to, during and/or after giving birth, that are interested in naturopathic treatment, have to obtain various remedies, each targeting a condition that may arise in one or more of the different phases of the labor and birth process, which makes the treatment process confusing and cumbersome.
In a search for a convenient naturopathic treatment, which would provide a response to the array of emotional conditions accompanying a pregnant woman through the various stages prior to, during and after birth and further provides a response to the emotional needs of a newborn baby, the present inventors have designed and successfully practiced a kit which comprises a combination of various naturopathic compositions, each being designed for treating an emotional condition of the pregnant woman, mother and/or newborn baby. Such a kit can conveniently serve a woman's need at each stage before, during and after birth and circumvents the need to search and/or use the suitable composition or combination of compositions at each of these stages.
Thus, according to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a kit which comprises two or more of the following naturopathic compositions:
(i) a composition for treating a condition associated with emotional stress prior to labor; (ii) a composition for treating a condition associated with emotional stress during labor and birth;
(iii) a composition for treating an emotional condition after birth; and
(iv) a composition for treating a birth trauma of a newborn baby.
As used herein, the phrase "naturopathic composition" describes a composition that can be beneficially used in naturopathic therapy, whereby the phrase "naturopathic therapy", as is well known in the art and is further defined hereinabove, describes a medical philosophy and practice that treats ailments chiefly by assisting the body's inherent capability to recover from illness and injury. Naturopathic therapy typically includes, for example, homeopathy, hydrotherapy, aromatherapy, acupuncture and herbalism. Preferred naturopathic therapies which are suitable for use in the context of the present include, without limitation, homeopathy (including classic and modern homeopathy, as described hereinabove), aromatherapy and herbalism. Preferred naturopathic compositions, according to the present embodiments, comprise flower essences and hence generally belong to herbal naturopathic therapy
(herbalism).
As used herein, the phrase "condition associated with emotional stress" generally describes a condition associated with a physical and/or mental disorder and/or imbalance that results from or leads to an emotional stress, as detailed hereinbelow, whereby an emotional stress is a disturbed emotional reaction.
The phrase "emotional condition" describes a mental condition that is manifested by disturbed emotional reactions. An emotional condition can be a condition resulting from a mental disorder per se or can be a physical and/or mental disorder and/or imbalance that results from or leads to an emotional stress, as is detailed hereinbelow.
As noted hereinabove, the emotional conditions and stress a woman prior, during and after labor experiences are often associated with hormonal changes and/or imbalance.
As used herein, the term "treating" includes abrogating, substantially inhibiting, slowing or reversing the progression of a condition, substantially ameliorating clinical symptoms of a condition or substantially preventing the appearance of clinical symptoms of a condition. The term "labor", which is also referred to herein interchangeably as
"delivery", describes the birthing process, namely the process a pregnant woman experiences prior to giving birth.
The term "birth" as used herein, describes the final stage of the birthing process namely, the act by which one or more babies are born. The phrase "prior to labor" relates to the period of time during pregnancy prior to the beginning of the birthing process and typically refers to the last trimester of pregnancy. Preferably, this time period refers to a few weeks prior to the expected date of birth.
As discussed hereinabove, women prior to labor often experience conditions such as fear from the unexpected and of losing control, stress, anxiety, worries of unknown and known origin, worries for the well being of loved ones, unexplained nervousness, discomfort, despair, mental and/or physical exhaustion, all of which are in one way or another associated with emotional stress. Thus, for example, continuous physical discomfort can lead to exhaustion, which in turn can intensify nervousness, anxiety and the like, or, vice versa, continuous anxiety can lead to mental and physical exhaustion, which in turn can lead to despair, etc.
A composition for treating a condition associated with an emotional stress prior to labor, according to the present embodiments, is therefore directed at treating women prior to labor, as defined herein, which suffer from one or more of these conditions.
Such a composition is also referred to herein, interchangeably, as a Step 1 composition.
According to preferred embodiments of the present invention, a composition for treating a condition associated with an emotional stress prior to labor comprises one or more Bach flower essences such as, but not limited to, Aspen, Mimulus, Cherry
Plum, Red Chestnut and Olive.
These Bach flower essences are characterized by therapeutic properties that are well suitable for treating the prevalent conditions associated with an emotional stress prior to labor.
Thus, for example, the flower essence Aspen is known for its beneficial effect in treating fears and worries of unknown origin and unexplained nervousness and discomfort. When used in the context of the present embodiments, Aspen flower essence is therefore most suitable for treating women prior to labor that feel uncertainty and fears of the unpredictable course of the birthing process and of the possible mishaps. This essence helps overcoming the fears of the unexpected and treating the sense of nervousness and unease.
The flower essence Mimulus is known for its beneficial effect in treating fears of known things and fears that arise in certain situations. When used in the context of the present embodiments, Mimulus flower essence is therefore suitable for treating fears from the pain involved in the birthing process, and fear of the birthing process itself.
The flower essence Cherry Plum is known for its beneficial effect in treating despair and fear of losing control. Women in labor often feel desperate and that they have no control over their body due to the advances in technology and in medicine.
The fear of the unknown and of the inability to cope with the situation raises their level of anxiety. Therefore, when used in the context of the present embodiments, Cherry Plum flower essence is suitable for treating conditions associated with loss of sense of control and loss of personal responsibility for the well being.
The flower essence Red Chestnut is known for its beneficial effect in treating worries about the health or well-being of loved ones. It's especially suitable to treat worries and over-concern of parents for their children. The tranquility of the mother has a direct effect on the tranquility of the baby. During labor, the mother may develop negative thoughts and worries for her unborn baby due to the stress of the birthing process. Thus, when used in the context of the present embodiments, Red Chestnut flower essence can be vital in reducing the anxiety and stress involved in the birthing process and to provide a sense of security and tranquility.
The flower essence Olive is known for its beneficial effect in treating exhaustion (mentally and physically), due to an ongoing illness, pregnancy, or ongoing stress. The nine months of pregnancy require coping with physical changes, side effects, pain, stress and fatigue. Thus, when used in the context of the present embodiments, Olive essence can be effective in treating these conditions at the late stages of pregnancy.
Preferably, the composition for treating a condition associated with an emotional stress prior to labor (the Step 1 composition) comprises two or more of the Bach flower essences cited hereinabove. Thus, the Step 1 composition, according to preferred embodiments of the present invention, comprises two, three, four or all of the Bach flower essences cited hereinabove. More preferably, this composition comprises a mixture of all of the Bach flower essences cited hereinabove, namely, Aspen, Mimulus, Cherry Plum, Red Chestnut and Olive.
A composition which comprises the above listed Bach flower essences altogether has never been described hitherto and, particularly, has not been described as a part of a "multistage" kit for treating conditions associated with emotional stress before, during and/or after delivery. By combining the beneficial effects of each of these essences in, for example, alleviating stress, anxiety and fear from the unexpected, as well as worries of unknown and known origin, worries for the well being of loved ones, unexplained nervousness, discomfort, despair, mental and/or physical exhaustion, and of losing control, such a composition provides a comprehensive response for an array of conditions that characterize the emotional being of a woman prior to labor. The phrase "during labor and birth" describes the period of time in pregnancy when the birthing process begins and up to the end of the birthing process. Preferably, this period of time begins at the onset of contractions and ends upon birth.
As discussed hereinabove, women during labor and birth often experience conditions such as trauma, shock, acute fear, helplessness, worries of unknown origin, unexplained nervousness, discomfort, despair, fear of losing control, anxiety, mental and/or physical exhaustion.
A composition for treating a condition associated with an emotional stress during labor and birth, according to the present embodiments, is therefore directed at treating women during labor and birth, as defined herein, which suffer from one or more of these conditions. Such a composition is also referred to herein, interchangeably, as a Step 2 composition.
According to preferred embodiments of the present invention, a composition for treating a condition associated with an emotional stress during labor and birth comprises one or more Bach flower essences such as, but not limited to, Star of Bethlehem, Rock Rose, Aspen, Cherry Plum and Olive.
These Bach flower essences are characterized by therapeutic properties that are well suitable for treating conditions associated with an emotional stress during labor and birth. Aspen, Cherry Plum and Olive are described hereinabove. The beneficial effects of these flower essences in treating fears and worries of unknown origin and unexplained nervousness and discomfort (for Aspen), despair and fear of losing control (for Cherry Plum) and exhaustion (mentally and physically), due to an ongoing illness, pregnancy, or ongoing stress (for Olive) are also suitable for treating conditions that are associated with an emotional stress during labor and birth.
The flower essence Star of Bethlehem is known for its beneficial effect in treating trauma and shock and is typically administered after physical and or mental trauma. It is also suitable for treating post traumatic experiences. This essence is employed to neutralize the effect of the shock (whether it being immediate or post traumatic) and to balance the emotional and nervous system. Since the birthing process is most traumatic to the body and the soul, the flower essence Star of Bethlehem is highly suitable for treating women during labor and birth. The flower essence Rock Rose is known for its beneficial effect in treating acute fear and helplessness. It is especially suitable for treating borderline panic and hysteria situations and is characterized by an immediate soothing action. Hence, a Rock Rose essence is especially suitable for treating acute pain and fear endured by the laboring woman at the beginning of the birth process or during contractions.
Preferably, the composition for treating a condition associated with an emotional stress during labor and birth (the Step 2 composition) comprises two or more of the Bach flower essences cited hereinabove. Thus, according to preferred embodiments of the present invention, the Step 2 composition comprises two, three, four or five of the Bach flower essences cited hereinabove. More preferably, the composition for treating a condition associated with an emotional stress during labor and birth comprises a mixture of all of the Bach flower essences cited hereinabove, namely, Star of Bethlehem, Rock Rose, Aspen, Cherry Plum and Olive.
A composition which comprises the above listed Bach flower essences altogether has never been described hitherto, and, particularly, has not been described as a part of a "multistage" kit for treating conditions associated with emotional stress before, during and/or after delivery. By combining the beneficial effects of each of these essences in, for example, strengthening and soothing the mother during labor, as well as alleviating trauma, shock, acute fear, helplessness, worries of unknown origin, unexplained nervousness, discomfort, despair, fear of losing control, anxiety, mental and/or physical exhaustion, such a composition provides a comprehensive response for an array of conditions that characterize the emotional being of a woman during labor and birth.
The phrase "after birth" describes the period of time beginning after the birthing process ends. This time period can last from 1 week to 3 months.
As discussed hereinabove, women after birth often experience conditions such as emotional imbalance, postpartum depression, mental and physical exhaustion, inability to perform everyday affairs, physical and mental traumatic and post traumatic shock and/or self doubts. A composition for treating an emotional condition after birth, according to the present embodiments, is therefore directed at treating women after birth, as defined herein, which suffer from one or more of these conditions. Such a composition is also referred to herein, interchangeably, as a Step 3 composition. According to preferred embodiments of the present invention, a composition for treating an emotional condition after birth comprises one or more Bach flower essences such as, but not limited to, Olive, Walnut, Hornbeam, star of Bethlehem and Mustard. These Bach flower essences are characterized by therapeutic properties that are well suitable for treating an emotional condition after birth.
Olive and Star of Bethlehem are described hereinabove. The beneficial effects of these flower essences in treating trauma, shock (immediate and post traumatic) and imbalance of the emotional and nervous system (for Star of Bethlehem), and exhaustion (mentally and physically), due to an ongoing illness, pregnancy, or ongoing stress (for Olive) are also suitable for treating emotional conditions after birth.
The flower essence Walnut is known for its beneficial effect in treating situations of change or transition, and helps in adjusting to the new situation. Since during the first days postpartum the new mother is usually exhausted from the physical and mental trauma involved in the birthing process, whereby overcoming this exhaustion quickly is vital in order to better adjust to the new situation and to strengthen the mother-baby bond, the Walnut essence is highly suitable for use in this context of the present embodiments.
The flower essence Hornbeam is known for its beneficial effect in treating mental or physical fatigue and, more specifically, helps those who feel incapable (mentally or physically) to perform the affairs of everyday. It is especially adequate for new beginnings. Physical and mental fatigue, are both common postpartum. The burden of the everyday chores may suddenly seem overwhelming to the new mother. The Hornbeam essence can therefore beneficially serve for nurturing the body, neutralizing self doubts and encouraging the sense of capability.
The flower essence Mustard is known for its beneficial effect in treating depression, for those who feel gloomy or desperate without necessarily having an explanation for it. Although the birth of a child is considered a joyous occasion, the birthing mother is usually going through a turmoil of emotions (typically due to physical and hormonal changes). On one hand a new mother feels excited and elated and on the other, exhausted and sore. Meanwhile she needs to adjust and to take care of her newborn. The mustard essence can therefore beneficially serve for treating a new mother's mood swings and feelings of despair while restoring the balance in her life.
Preferably, the composition for treating an emotional condition after birth (the Step 3 composition) comprises two or more of the Bach flower essences cited hereinabove. Thus, the Step 3 composition can comprise two, three, four or five of the Bach flower essences cited hereinabove. More preferably, the composition for treating an emotional condition after birth comprises a mixture of all of the Bach flower essences cited hereinabove, namely, Olive, Walnut, Hornbeam, star of Bethlehem and Mustard. A composition which comprises the above listed Bach flower essences altogether has never been described hitherto, and, particularly, has not been described as a part of a "multistage" kit for treating conditions associated with emotional stress before, during and/or after delivery. By combining the beneficial effects of each of these essences in, for example, facilitating recovery and emotional adjustment, as well as alleviating, postpartum depression, mental and physical exhaustion, inability to perform everyday affairs, physical and mental traumatic and post traumatic shock and/or self doubts, such a composition provides a comprehensive response for an array of conditions that characterize the emotional being of a woman after giving birth.
As used herein, the phrase "birth trauma" relates to an emotional condition sustained by a newborn baby during and after birth.
As discussed hereinabove, newborn babies often experience conditions such as physical and mental traumatic and post traumatic shock, acute fear, helplessness, inability to adjust to a new situation, worries of unknown origin, unexplained nervousness, discomfort, anxiety and/or fear of the unexpected. A composition for treating a birth trauma, according to the present embodiments, is therefore directed at treating newborn babies, as defined herein, which suffer from one or more of these conditions. Such a composition is referred to herein, interchangeably, as a Baby composition.
According to preferred embodiments of the present invention, a composition for treating a birth trauma comprises one or more Bach flower essences such as, but not limited to, Star of Bethlehem, Rock Rose, Walnut and Aspen.
These Bach flower essences are characterized by therapeutic properties that are well suitable for treating a birth trauma, and are all described hereinabove. Thus, for example, The beneficial effects of these flower essences in treating trauma, shock (immediate and post traumatic) and imbalance of the emotional and nervous system (for Star of Bethlehem), acute fear and helplessness, borderline panic and hysteria situations (characterized by an immediate soothing action) (for Rock Rose), situations of change or transition, and in adjusting to the new situation (for Walnut) and fears and worries of unknown origin and unexplained nervousness and discomfort (for Aspen) are also suitable for treating emotional conditions after birth.
Preferably, the composition for treating a birth trauma (the Baby composition) comprises two or more of the Bach flower essences cited hereinabove. Thus, the Baby composition, according to preferred embodiments of the present invention, comprises two, three or four of the Bach flower essences cited hereinabove. More preferably, the composition for treating a birth trauma comprises a mixture of all of the Bach flower essences cited hereinabove, namely, Star of Bethlehem, Rock Rose, Walnut and Aspen. A composition which comprises the above listed Bach flower essences altogether has never been described hitherto, and, particularly, has not been described as a part of a "multistage" kit for treating conditions associated with emotional stress before, during and after delivery. By combining the beneficial effects of each of these essences in, for example, soothing and alleviating the birth trauma, as well as alleviating acute fear, helplessness, nervousness, discomfort and anxiety, adjusting to the new situation and coping with worries of unknown origin, such a composition is capable of facilitating the adjustment of a newborn baby to the new world and further provides a response to the new mother who seeks for routes to calm her baby.
According to this aspect of the present invention, the kit may comprise any combination of two or more of the above described compositions. Thus, the kit may comprise, for example, the Step 1 and Step 2 compositions, the Step 2 and Step 3 compositions, the Step 1 and Baby composition, the Step 2 and Baby composition, the Step 3 and baby composition, the Step 1 and Step 3 compositions, the Step 1, Step 2 and Step 3 compositions and any other combination, depending on the emotional being of a pregnant woman and the desired cure she seeks for. Most preferably the kit comprises each of the four compositions described hereinabove, namely:
(i) a composition for treating a condition associated with emotional stress prior to labor (Step 1 composition); (ii) a composition for treating a condition associated with emotional stress during labor and birth (Step 2 composition);
(iii) a composition for treating an emotional condition after birth (Step 3 composition); and (iv) a composition for treating a birth trauma of a newborn baby (Baby composition).
Such a kit is also referred to herein as a "Mommy Baby" kit.
As discussed hereinabove, such a kit provides a therapeutic response to an array of conditions a woman and a newborn baby may experience before, during and after birth.
According to preferred embodiments of the present invention, one or more of the compositions within the kit described herein further comprise an acceptable carrier. Preferably, each of the compositions described herein comprises an acceptable carrier. As used herein, the phrase "acceptable carrier" refers to a carrier or a diluent that facilitates the administration of the active ingredient(s) and which does not cause significant irritation to an organism and does not abrogate the biological activity and properties of the administered active ingredients.
Preferably, the carrier comprises water. The water can be tap water, mineral water, distilled water, filtered water and the like. Most preferably, the water is solarized water, namely, water that has been exposed to sunlight.
Further preferably, the carrier comprises a preservative substance. Preferably, the preservative substance is an alcoholic substance, the presently most preferred being Brandy. However, other alcoholic substances such as cognac, wine, vodka, rum and the like can also be used. In an exemplary embodiment, the concentration of the alcoholic substance is 30 weight percents of the total weight of the carrier.
The concentration of the active ingredient(s), e.g., the Bach flower essence(s) utilized in each of the compositions described herein which further comprises a carrier, can range from high concentration to very low concentration. Thus, each of the compositions described herein may independently be concentrated (e.g. 1 drop of a single essence per 1-3 ml of the carrier), diluted (e.g. 1 drop of a single essence per 10- 50 ml of the carrier) or homeopathically diluted (e.g., 1 drop of a single essence per 106-1010 ml of the carrier). Herein throughout, the term "homeopathic" and its grammatical diversions refers to a form of treatment which utilizes highly diluted solutions that comprise agents, which in undiluted doses, are deemed to produce similar symptoms (as the ones for which they are prescribed) in a healthy individual. Each of the compositions described herein can therefore be a "homeopathic" composition or a "non- homeopathic" composition.
In homeopathic compositions, a concentration of each of the one or more essences described herein may range from about 1 drop of a single essence per 103 ml of the carrier, to about 1 drop of a single essence per 1010 ml of the carrier. Thus, the concentration of each of the one or more essences described herein can be, for example, 1 drop of a single essence per 103 ml of the carrier, 1 drop of a single essence per 104 ml of the carrier, 1 drop of a single essence per 105 ml of the carrier, 1 drop of a single essence per 106 ml of the carrier, 1 drop of a single essence per 107 ml of the carrier, 1 drop of a single essence per 108 ml of the carrier, 1 drop of a single essence per 109 ml of the carrier, or 1 drop of a single essence per 1010 ml of the carrier. Highly diluted composition in which the concentration of each of the one or more essences can be 1 drop of a single essence per 1012 ml of the carrier, and even higher can also be utilized.
It is noted herein that in any of the aspects of the present invention, when a homeopathic composition is used, it can be selected from a classic homeopathic composition or a modern homeopathic composition.
As detailed hereinabove, a "classic homeopathic composition" typically comprises a single active agent that exhibits the desired therapeutic effect. The active agent is preferably a flower essence but can also be derived from an animal source or be a mineral.
A "modern homeopathic composition" typically comprises a mixture of active agents that is designed and formulated so as to exhibit a synergistic effect on the targeted system. A preferred modern homeopathic composition typically comprises a mixture of flower essences, as described herein, but can also include a mixture of one or more flower essences, and one or more active agents that are derived from minerals or animal sources. Each of the compositions described herein can therefore be a homeopathic or non-homeopathic composition. Each of the homeopathic compositions described herein can be a classic or modern homeopathic composition.
According to preferred embodiments of the present invention, the compositions described herein are "non-homeopathic" compositions. Thus, preferably, a concentration of each of the one or more essences described herein in each of the compositions described herein, may range from about 1 drop of a single essence per 1 ml of the carrier, to about 1 drop of a single essence per 100 ml of the carrier, more preferably, from about 1 drop of a single essence per 1 ml of the carrier to about 1 drop of a single essence per 60 ml of the carrier, more preferably from about 1 drop of a single essence per 1 ml of the carrier to about 1 drop of a single essence per 40 ml of the carrier, more preferably from about 1 drop of a single essence per 1 ml of the carrier to about 1 drop of a single essence per 20 ml of the carrier, more preferably from about 1 drop of a single essence per 1 ml of the carrier to about 1 drop of a single essence per 10 ml of the carrier and most preferably is about 1 drop of a single essence per 10 ml of the carrier.
Each of the compositions described hereinabove is preferably designed suitable for oral and/or topical administration.
Compositions designed suitable for oral administration are preferably liquid compositions that can be administered directly as e.g., drops or syrup, or otherwise can be mixed within a drink or a food substance. Such compositions can include the flower essences per se, or, preferably, further comprise a carrier and optionally other excipients.
Herein the term "excipient" refers to an inert substance added to a pharmaceutical composition to further facilitate administration of a compound. Examples, without limitation, of excipients include various sugars and types of starch and gelatin.
Alternatively, compositions for oral administration can be formulated as capsules, which contain the flower essence(s), optionally and preferably, within a carrier, and an encapsulating matrix. Such compositions include, for example, push- fit capsules made of gelatin as well as soft, sealed capsules made of gelatin and a plasticizer, such as glycerol or sorbitol. In soft capsules, the active compounds may be dissolved or suspended in suitable liquids, such as fatty oils, liquid paraffin, or liquid polyethylene glycols. In addition, stabilizers and preservatives may be added.
An additional exemplary from of capsules include globules (small spherical solid compositions).
Further alternatively, compositions for oral administration can be formulated as sprayable compositions. Such compositions are conveniently delivered in the form of an aerosol spray presentation (which typically includes powdered, liquified and/or gaseous carriers) from a pressurized pack or a nebulizer, with the use of a suitable propellant.
Compositions designed suitable for topical administration are preferably liquid compositions that can be readily applied to the desired skin or mucosal area by spreading or spraying. Optionally, liquid compositions can be topically applied within a bath water. Alternatively, compositions for topical administration can be formulated as creams, milks or lotions, with an appropriate carrier.
Further alternatively, compositions for topical application can be formulated as a skin patch, which transdermally delivers the composition to the blood system.
A skin patch typically comprises a backing, to which a reservoir containing the composition is attached. The reservoir can be, for example, a pad in which the composition is dispersed or soaked, or a liquid reservoir. The skin patch can further include a frontal adhesive, which adheres and secures the patch to the skin. Silicone rubbers with self-adhesiveness can alternatively be used. A protective permeable layer can be used to protect the adhesive side of the patch prior to its use. A skin patch may further comprise a removable cover, which serves for protecting the device upon storage.
When applied as skin patched the composition preferably further comprises a penetration enhancer, which facilitates the penetration of the composition through the skin.
Preferably, compositions for topical administration are liquid formulations, and are applied as drops. Further preferably, the compositions are applied within a bath water or directly to the skin preferably around pulse points such as the temples, wrists or neck.
According to preferred embodiments of the present invention, the Step 1, Step 2 and Step 3 compositions are formulated as liquid compositions for administration as drops, preferably directly under the tongue. The Baby composition is formulated as a liquid composition and is administered via topical application within a bath water, or directly on the skin around pulse points such as the wrists, temples and neck.
According to preferred embodiments of the present invention, the kit comprising each of the four compositions described hereinabove, namely Step 1, Step2, Step 3 and Baby compositions, is packaged in a packaging material enclosing these compositions and is identified in print, in or on the packaging material, for use in the treatment of women prior to, during and/or after giving birth and/or a newborn baby.
More specifically, according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the kit described hereinabove is identified in print, in or on the packaging material, for use in the treatment of a condition associated with an emotional stress prior to labor, a condition associated with an emotional stress during labor and birth, an emotional condition after birth, and/or birth trauma of a newborn baby.
