Description
Ar. apparatus for coating an edge portion of a panel
The present invention relates to an apparatus for coating an edge portion of a panel, comprising a support for supporting a coating to be coated on the edge portion and a rotatable member for pressing the support including the coating onto the edge portion.
Such an apparatus is known from WO 2008/031825. The prior art apparatus comprises an endless belt which supports a coating to oe coated on the edge portion of the panel. The belt is glided by two rollers and a press element having a roller shape. The press element is movable in a direction perpendicularly to the surface of the belt and is adapted such that it presses the support including the coating onto the edge portion under al^ operating conditions.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved apparatus.
For τhis purpose the rotatable meirber is provided with a hub and a pressing element oeing resiiiently supported by the hub and in contact w.i t n the support..
Due to this feature the apparatus is simplified. An axis of rotation of the rctatabie member may have a fixed location, whereas a variable force against the support is generated by the resiliency of the pressing element with respect to the hub.
The pressing element may be resiliently supported through a fluid being present between the hub and the pressing element. This further simplifies the rotatable member. The fluid may be formed by an air cushion, for example.
In a practical embodiment the pressing element is made of a rubber, but alternative materials are conceivable, Tn a very simple embodiment the pressing element is forrred by an outer circumferential portion of a torus, supported by the hub. in this case the rotatable member is comparable with a wheel having a pneumatic tyre.
The support and the pressing element may be integrated, which π.eαns that the support has a fixed .location
with respect :o the pressing clement , Ln practice the integrated pressing element and support are resilientiy supported by the hub and presses the coating onto the edge portlor..
5 Alternatively, the support is a belt which is guided by the rota table member, and the speeds of the rotatable member and the belt at a comae: location between the rotatable meirber ano the belt are substantially l ysimilar. This minimizes slip between the rotatable member and the belt.
10 The invention wi.ll hereafter be elucidated with reference to the very schematic drawings showing an embodiment of the invention by way of example.
Fig. 1 is a cross -sectional view of a part of the apparatus according to the invention. 15 Fig. 2 is cross-sectional view taken along the line
II-II in Fig. 1 on a larger scale.
Fig, 1 shows a cross-sectional view of an embodiment of an apparatus 1 for coating an edge portion 2 of a panel 3 according to the invention. Fig. 2 shows a cross-sectional
20 view taken along the line II- II in Fig. 1. With reference to Figs. 1 and 2 the apparatus 1 comprises a support 4, which supports a coating 10 to be coated on the edge portion 2 of the panel 3. The coating 10 may be a lacquer, for example, sprayed onto the support 4 by a dosage nozzle 11. The support 25 4 is a flexible element wh-.cn holds the coating 10 before it is pressed onto tne edge portion 2. The edge portion 2 of the panel 3 may be a bevelled edge along sides of the panel 3. The panels 3 may be floor panels, for example, and can be attached to each other by coupling means to form a floor covering. Duo 30 to the bevelled edges a V-groove will oe present between two adjacent panels 3.
Under operating conditions the support 4 is pressed against the edge portion 2 by a rotatable press member or press roller 5. Preferably, the speed of the belt 4, the speed 35 of the panel 3 and the speed of the roller 5 at a contact location between the roller 5 and the belt 4 are substantially identica1 in order to minimize any slip between those parts.
The rotatablc press roller 5 may be driven or may be a freely rotatabie roller.
The press roller 5 of the embodiment of Fig. 1 and 2 comprises a hub 6, which resiliently supports a presoing element 7. The pressing element 7 is flexible, for example it is made of a rubber compound, whereas the resiliency is created by an air cushion 8. The air cushion 6 :..s present between the hub 6 and the pressing element 7. in the embodiment as shown in Fig. 2 tr.e pressing element 7 is hold by circular holding elements 9 to the hub 6 which holding elements 9 project to each other.
In the embodiment as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the support 4 and the pressing element 7 are integrated. A separate belt as a support A being fixed on the pressing element 7 is conceivable, as well.
In an alternative embodiment the support 4 may be a belt which ip guided by the press roller 5, for example an endless belt, In that case the belt has a length which is longer than the circumference of the press roller 5 and iε supported by the press roller b at a contact location between the pressing element. 7 and the belt. Furthermore, the apparatus 1 may have a plurality of press rollers 5 guiding the belt and being disposed behind each other as seen in a direction of movement of the panel 3, i.e. the rotational axes of the press rollers 5 extend parallel with respect to each ot fie r .
Tn a very simple alternative embodiment of the apparatus I the press roller 5 looks like a vehicle wheel including a pneumatic tyre. The pressing element 7 is then formed by a portion of a torus. The integrated pressing element 7 and the support 4 as shown in Fig. 2 is provided with a circumferential protrusion, but a flat circumferential surface is also conceivable. The width of tne support 4 and/or the pressing element 7 may be selected on the basis of the width of a bevelled edge portion 2 of a panel 3.
The apparatus may be adapted such that the rotational axis of the press roller 5 has a fixed location with respect
to the odαc portion 2 of a panel 3, but the press roller 5 may also be provided with a press adjustment device (not shown) for adjusting the press force of the press roller 5 against the support" 4 and the edge portion 2, for example if the variable press force due to the resilientIy mounted pressing member 7 is insufficient.
Froin the foregoing, it will be clear thai: the invention provides a relatively simple apparatus for coating an edge portion of a panel. The invention is not limited to tne examples shown in the drawings ana described hereinbefore,, which may be varied in different manners within the scope of the claims ana tneir technical equivalents. For example, the air cushion nay be replaced by an alternative fluid, eventually a pressurized gas .
