Abstract

The invention refers to colanders and similar items used widely to separate the solid from the liquid ingredients of a mixture (usually foodstuffs but also any other mixture). The hygienic colanders and the like, according to present invention, comprise two different utensils. The first utensil is a perforated bowl (1) in which we strain the materials. The second utensil is a separate open base (2) on which the perforated bowl (1) sits. The base (2) and the bowl (1) have appropriate design which facilitates their cleaning. Further, the perforated bowl may also sits on a common utensil of appropriate shape and size (e.g. a stewpot or a bowl or a cup). The advantage of the invention is that it gives a colander or a similar item, with high standards of hygiene, simple construction and multiple use.

Description

HYGIENIC COLANDERS AND THE LIKE
The invention refers to colanders and similar items used widely to separate the solid from the liquid ingredients of a mixture (usually foodstuffs but also any other mixture).
The colanders and similar items, as we all know, are utensils not heated. Therefore same must be cleaned thoroughly, so they do not become nests of microbes.
In the market one can find two types of colanders. The first is the hand colanders. They are equipped with a long handle to get grip of (e.g. like the saucepans) and are of appropriate form and/or are accompanied by extra attachments, to be fitted on the utensil collecting the liquid
(e.g. on a glass). Their form and/or the extra attachments sometimes hinder thorough cleaning of the colanders and become nests of microbes.
Te second type concerns colanders with own means of support, attached permanently onto their body (e.g. short legs or something similar). Such attachments make the cleaning of the colanders difficult and become nests of microbes. Often they are equipped with other additional attachments that make the cleaning even more difficult.
Further, the holes of the colanders for drainage of the liquids, in both types, sometimes are of big depth and/or sharp edges, that make cleaning difficult as well. The hygienic colanders and the like, according to present invention, comprise two different utensils. The first utensil is a perforated bowl in which we strain the materials. The second utensil is a separate open base on which the perforated bowl sits. The perforated part of the bowl has, preferably, appropriate design which facilitates its cleaning. Further, the perforated bowl may also sits on a closed base or on a common utensil of appropriate shape and size.
The advantage of the invention is that it gives a colander or a similar item, with high standards of hygiene, simple construction and multiple use.
Fig. A, B Show indicatively a hygienic colander in perspective view and in cross section.
Fig. F, Δ Show indicatively two examples of formation of the openings of a hygienic colander in cross section.
Drawings A, B, F, Δ and the description that follows are only an example and do not restrict the field of application of the invention.
The hygienic colanders and the like items comprise two different utensils. One perforated bowl in which we strain the materials and a separate base on which the perforated bowl sits.
The perforated bowl may be of any appropriate shape and size in combination with its base. Also, it may be made of any appropriate material or a combination of different materials.
The base may be of any appropriate shape and size in combination with the perforated bowl. Also, it may be made of any appropriate material or a combination of different materials (e.g. it may be made of a different material of that of the bowl). The base could also have rounded ends, not to wear the points of contact. It may also have rounded angles, for easy cleaning.
The base may be open, so that the liquid ingredients drain or closed, so that the liquid ingredients strained are collected. The closed base could, under appropriate molding, be used as an independent utensil as well (e.g. as food container, with the addition of a lid, so that the collected liquid is kept in it).
The perforated bowl may be accompanied by an open base or by an open base and a closed base or by a mixed base, a combination of an open and a closed base (e.g. the open base may be adapted on or under the closed and be detached from it when needed).
As it is difficult to anticipate all needs, the perforated bowl may also sit on a common utensil of appropriate shape (e.g. a stewpot or a cup). The perforated bowl may sit on the base or on some common utensil of appropriate shape, with some part of its surface or with its brim.
In order the hygienic colander does not take up much space during storage and/or transportation, the base could be stored inside the perforated bowl (to be, that is, of appropriate size and shape, in combination with the size and shape of the perforated bowl, so that it fits inside).
In Drawings A and B, the hygienic colander is made of stainless steel. The perforated bowl (1 ) sits on the open base (2) with its solid section (3).
The open base (2) has rounded lips (6, 7) so it does not wear the points it contacts. On storage and/or during transportation of the hygienic colander, the open base (2), preferably, is placed inside the perforated bowl (1 ). The size and the shape of the open base (2) is carefully adapted to the size and shape of the perforated bowl (1 ), so that by a slight pressure the open base (2) can wedge to the perforated bowl (1 ) and stays in that position.
The perforated bowl and its base could be equipped with additional parts, however same are not preferred due to the difficulty involved in cleaning them.
The brim of the perforated bowl can be formed properly in any expedient shape and size (e.g. all or a part of it, may be widened and a part of it be formed into a long handle). We could, thus, hold the perforated bowl from its brim, with one or both our hands. Further, the perforated bowl could be supported by it, on the base or on some common utensil that has appropriate shape.
The hygienic colander could even be used as squeezer (e.g. for squeezing lemons or crushing tomatoes).
In Drawings A and B the brim (5) has been widened and has acquired an elliptical shape. When the perforated bowl is adapted onto the open base (2) or onto some closed base or onto some common utensil which has appropriate shape, it may sit on the solid section (3) or on the brim (5). Given that it has very good support, it may be also used as squeezer, if we wish.
The perforated bowl may have an appropriate opening, preferably on its brim, for hanging it, if we wish. When the opening is situated at the brim of the bowl, by adjusting the inclination of the brim we can determine the gradient of the hanging perforated bowl. Of course, if we wish, an appropriate opening may also exist on the base, in order we hang it as well.
In Drawings A and B, the perforated bowl (1 ) has an appropriate opening (9) at its brim (5) so it can be hung. Also the base has an appropriate opening (10), preferably at the lower brim (7), so we can hang it as well. The perforated section of the bowl may have any appropriate configuration (e.g. a meshwork or random holes).
The openings of the perforated section of the bowl could have rounded edges so that their cleaning is facilitated.
In Drawings A and B, the bowl (1 ) has a perforated section (4) with random holes (8) with rounded lips (1 1 ).
When the openings are long (e.g. when the material of the hygienic colander and the like items is of considerable thickness) we can, preferably, take off a section of the internal or the external mouth or both.
In Drawing F a section of the internal mouth (12) of the opening has been taken off.
In Drawing Δ a section of the internal mouth (12) and a section of the external mouth (13) of the opening has been taken off.
