Description

PROCESS AND RELATIVE EQUIPMENT FOR THE
PRODUCTION OF FILM FOR PACKAGING AND WRAPPING
AND REEL OBTAINED
DESCRIPTION The present patent relates to processes and equipment for the production of plastic film for packaging and wrapping and in particular concerns a new process and relative equipment for the production of film for packaging and wrapping of products in general, with openings that can be re-closed by means of pre-applied adhesive labels, and reel obtained. Film for the packaging of products of various types, for example food products, are known. Said film is made of polymeric plastic material, generally polyethylene or polypropylene or even polylaminate, polyester or aluminium cardboard etc., usually wound on reels suitable for use in packaging production lines. To produce the known packaging, said film is folded, wrapped around the product to be packed and then heat-sealed along the edges to guarantee sealing of the package.
Packages with guided re-closeable opening are known, where an outline is marked by incisions on said film, generally by punching, identifying an opening on which a label made of adhesive film is applied.
Said label has dimensions larger than the dimensions of said opening so that the perimeter edges of the adhesive label protrude beyond the perimeter of the opening. To open the package, the user raises one edge of said label, thus tearing said portion of the opening and therefore opening the package. The package can then be re-closed by replacing said label in its original position, corresponding to said opening, and pressing the adhesive edges onto the film forming the package. Generally said incision or notch which provides the opening has an open profile forming a sort of tongue which remains joined to the rest of the package so as to facilitate re-closing thereof, i.e. repositioning of the label. The process for producing reels of plastic film in the form of a sheet or continuous film is known. Said process entails the unwinding of said film, punching of said incisions identifying said openings in modular positions and subsequent application of said adhesive labels corresponding to said openings. Said film with pre-punched openings and with labels subsequently applied can be conveyed directly to a packaging machine.
Alternatively said film with pre-punched openings and labels subsequently applied is then re-wound on the reel and can therefore be used in the known equipment for packaging products of any type, for example foodstuffs, both fresh and dried, personal hygiene products, wipes, etc.
One of the drawbacks of the reels of known type consists in the fact that said incisions, in general, are marked irregularly or even only traced with a broken line and, since the plastic film does not have veins or a weave, tearing of the film does not always follow the predefined incision line, thus the opening can be irregular, partial or even cause breakage of the entire package so that it cannot be adequately re-closed. Said drawback is serious especially when said films are used for packaging fresh foodstuffs which must be sealed and re-closed as hermetically as possible.
A further drawback of the known films made of fine rigid polymeric material, such as polyester, consists in the fact that said films tear even when subject to slight traction during the work processes after incision of the films. Furthermore, since the punch operates rhythmically always in the same way, regardless of whether the labels are positioned correctly or incorrectly, when one or more labels are positioned incorrectly or punching is irregular, jamming of the packaging machine can occur, consequently interrupting production with the risk of damage to the equipment and products to be packaged, especially if the equipment is kept running without constant monitoring by the operators. Therefore in order to avoid said limits, jamming or tearing, reels containing plastic in the form of a sheet or continuous film of limited width are used, in the order of 20-30 cm, since wider reels of continuous film involve more frequent risks.
To remedy said drawbacks a new process and relative equipment for the production of film for packaging and wrapping of products in general has been studied, with openings that can be re-closed by means of pre- applied adhesive labels, and reel obtained. The main aim of the present invention is to produce a reel of film for packaging and wrapping provided with a succession of openings pre- incised at controlled depth and with pre-applied adhesive labels, and where said reels can be used in packaging equipment, eliminating the risk of jamming or breakage of the film due to the precision with which said openings are produced and the control system used. A further object of the present invention consists in the fact that it permits the production of packages with re-closeable opening, where said opening is pre-incised by means of particularly shaped punches guaranteeing a highly dependable product.
A further object of the present invention consists in the fact that it detects the number and/or position of the labels applied incorrectly or the labels missing, due to the use of at least one detector device suitable for controlling the presence and position of the label corresponding to the pre-incised opening, furthermore signalling any errors.
A further object of the present invention consists in the fact that it eliminates breakages, particularly of fine rigid film in the reel rewinding phases and/or in the film processing phases, since the particular rotary punch used in the new equipment is designed so as not to perforate the film when the label has accidentally not been applied.
A further object of the present invention consists in the fact that it is possible to adopt film wider than the film commonly used. The new equipment permits the use of film even wider than 60 cm. These and further objects, direct and complementary, are achieved by the new process and relative equipment for the production of film for packaging and wrapping of products in general with pre-incised openings at controlled depth, re-closeable by means of pre-applied adhesive labels, and reel obtained. The new equipment comprises:
. at least one unwinding station for at least one reel of plastic or polylaminate film, comprising one or more continuous films; . at least one station for application of one or more lines or successions of adhesive labels on a surface of said continuous film, said adhesive labels being in a discrete format or in a continuous strip;
• at least one incision station for at least said continuous film, comprising at least a rotary punching machine for incision at controlled depth, where said incision is performed on the surface of said continuous film opposite the application surface of said adhesive label, and where the incision of said film is complete when opposite said adhesive label;
. at least one station for rewinding said film or polylaminate film on the reel.
The equipment furthermore preferably comprises at least one station for detecting the thickness of the film coming out of said incision station, suitable for determining the presence and position of the adhesive label applied on said continuous film, to determine any positioning errors of said adhesive label.
The equipment can furthermore comprise at least one station for signalling any errors in application of said adhesive label, for example by means of sound signals and/or by application of a visual indicator, such as a coloured stamp and/or preferably a tag made of a metallic or metal- coated material, suitable for being identified by detector devices, for example magnetic, electromagnetic or optical. Said detection station preferably comprises at least one meter for measuring the thickness of the film coming out of said incision station, therefore detecting the presence and position of the label and sending an error signal if necessary to at least one device suitable for applying said indicator at the error point or in the vicinity thereof. The characteristics of the new process and the new equipment will be better clarified by the following description with reference to the drawing attached by way of non-limiting example.
Figure 1 schematises the process and the equipment, while figure 2 schematises a detail, in frontal section, of the rotary punching machine (F).
Figure 3 schematises the operation of said rotary punching machine (F) when the adhesive label (E) is not applied in the correct position on the continuous film (P). Figure 4 schematises a section of the film (P), with two rows of incisions (T) and labels (E).
The new equipment for the production of plastic or polylaminate films (P) for packaging and wrapping, said films (P) comprising a plurality of incisions (T) identifying openings covered by adhesive labels (E), comprises: • an unwinding station (1) for at least one reel (11) of continuous plastic or polylaminate film (P);
. an application station (2) for application of one or more lines or successions of adhesive labels (E) on a surface (Pl) of said continuous film (P) in pre-defined modular positions;
. an incision station (3) comprising at least one rotary punching machine (F) for the incision of said continuous film (P), where said incision (T) is performed on the surface (P2) of said continuous film (P) opposite the surface (Pl) on which said adhesive label/s (E) are applied and in modular positions corresponding to said label/s (E);
• a detection station (4) for detecting the overall thickness of the continuous film (P) coming out of said incision station (3), suitable for determining the presence and position of said adhesive label/s (E) applied on said continuous film (P), to determine any positioning errors of said label/s;
• a signalling station (5) for signalling errors if said thickness detected is less than the overall thickness given by the sum of the thickness (p) of the film (P) and the thickness (e) of the label (E); a rewinding station (6) for rewinding said continuous film (P), with label/s (E) applied, on a reel (B), suitable for being sent to the subsequent processes and equipment for packaging.
Said rotary punching machine (F) comprises at least one punching cylinder (Fl) rotating on at least one counter-cylinder (F2) on which said continuous film (P) and/or said label/s applied (E) run, adhering to it, and where from the cylindrical surface (FI l) of said punching cylinder (Fl) one or more spacer rings (F3) emerge, for example the sides of the punching cylinder (Fl), in contact with the surface (F21) of said counter- cylinder (F2) and having a height greater than the sum of the thicknesses (p, e) of said continuous film (P) and of said adhesive label (E), and one or more punches (F4) reproducing the shape of said incision or opening (T) to be made on the continuous film (P) and in particular on the surface (P2) opposite the surface (Pl) where said labels (E) are applied. Said spacers (F3) can also be height-adjustable, i.e. permitting variation in the distance between the cylindrical surface (FI l) of the punching ' cylinder (Fl) and the cylindrical surface (F21) of the counter-cylinder (F2).
Said punch (F4) comprises one or more blades or cutting edges with height below that of said spacers (F3), i.e. such that the cutting height (d), defined by the difference (d) between the height of said spacers (F3) and the height of said punch (F4), is less than the thickness (e) of said adhesive label (E) but greater than the minimum thickness necessary to guarantee that the lower layer running on and adhering to said counter- cylinder (F2) remains intact, i.e. said label (E) or said continuous film (P).
In this way, when said film (P) with label applied (E) enters said rotary punching machine (F), said punch (F4) perforates said film (P) completely and only partially perforates said label (E) applied on the opposite surface (Pl) of said film (P). If on the other hand said label (E) is not applied, or is not applied correctly in the pre-defined position, said film (P) enters said rotary punching machine (F) with an overall thickness equal to the thickness (p) of the film (P) only. In this way, since said cutting height (d) is certainly greater than half the thickness (p) of said film (P), the film (P) is only partially and not completely perforated, i.e. it comes out of the incision station (3) without any openings made in it.
This guarantees that the film (P), used subsequently in packaging machines or equipment, does not cause jamming or interruptions of the production process, because it has no openings not covered by labels.
Said detection station comprises at least one thickness meter (M) for the film (P) coming out of said incision station (3), in said modular positions corresponding to the position of said incisions and labels, and at least one signalling device (A) for signalling errors if said thickness detected is less than the overall thickness given by the thickness (p) of the film (P) and the thickness of the label (E).
Said thickness meter (M) is for example a gauge with 0.001 mm accuracy. Said signalling device (A) preferably comprises at least one applicator of at least one metallic or metal-coated tag (Al) on said continuous film (P) corresponding to or in the vicinity of the position in which the error has been detected.
Said metallic or metal-coated tag can therefore be detected by means of a magnetic or electromagnetic detector suitable for identifying and/or recording the position and/or the number of said metallic or metal-coated tags.
Therefore with reference to the preceding description and the accompanying drawing the following claims are made.
