Description

A BINAURAL HEARING SYSTEM
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention is directed to a hearing system according to the preamble of claim 1.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Hearing devices usually comprise a control element in order that the hearing device user is able to adjust parameter settings controlling the input/output behavior of the hearing device. Thereto, the control element is positioned on the hearing device housing for easy access by the user of the hearing device.
A binaural hearing system consisting of a hearing device for the left ear and a hearing device for the right ear is described in EP-O 941 014 Bl. Only one of the two hearing devices has a control element to adjust the volume setting for the entire hearing system, i.e. for both hearing devices. Control signals that are generated by the control element are transmitted from the hearing device containing the control element to the hearing device having no control element. Therewith, the volume can be adjusted simultaneously in both hearing devices. Because the volume control needs two control elements, namely one for increasing the volume and one for decreasing the volume, a rather large space is needed on the hearing device housing with the control elements.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
As modern hearing devices tend to become smaller and smaller, less and less space for positioning control elements on the housing of hearing devices is available. Still, the hearing device user wants flexible control of the hearing device features and settings.
Therefore, a hearing system is provided comprising:
- a left and a right hearing device that are position- able in or at a left and right ear, respectively, of a hearing device user, each hearing device comprising:
— at least one microphone,
- a receiver,
— a signal processing unit, which is operatively connected to the at least one microphone as well as to the receiver,

- in that the at least one particular parameter is adjustable in an opposite direction by actuating the corresponding control element of the other hearing device, wherein the adjustments of the at least one particular parameter is exchanged via the link in order to synchronize the hearing devices.
The present invention has the advantage to provide an easy and simple method to adjust a parameter of a hearing system. Mistakes when adjusting a parameter are minimized do to the clear separation of the control elements.
In one embodiment of the present invention, the hearing system is further characterized
- in that the particular parameter is increase-able by actuating the corresponding control element of one of the hearing devices, and
- in that the particular parameter is decrease-able by actuating the corresponding control element of the other hearing device. - A -
In further embodiments of the present invention, the hearing system is further characterized in that the at least one control element is at least one or a combination of the following control elements:
- a toggle switch;
- a rocker switch;
- a see-saw switch.
In still further embodiments of the present invention, the hearing system is further characterized in that the at least one control element is a single toggle switch.
In other embodiments of the present invention, the hearing system is further characterized in that the at least one control element is a toggle switch in combination with a rocker switch.
In other embodiments of the present invention, the hearing system is further characterized in that a remote control is operatively connected with at least one of the two hearing devices for selecting the at least one particular parameter.
In other embodiments of the present invention, the hearing system is further characterized in that the remote control is wirelessly connected to at least one of the two hearing devices . _ C _
In other embodiments of the present invention, the hearing system is further characterized in that the link between the hearing devices is a wireless link.
In other embodiments of the present invention, the hearing system is further characterized in that the at least one particular parameter is one or a combination of the following :

- set of parameters reflecting, on the one hand, "better understanding, selective hearing or more intelligibility" and, on the other hand, "more pleasant hearing or better all-around hearing".
It is expressly pointed out that any combination of the above-mentioned or hereinafter described embodiments is feasible. Of course, those combinations of embodiments that would result in contradictions are excluded.
Additional features of the present invention will become apparent by those skilled in the art upon consideration of the following detailed description of embodiments. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
Fig. 1 shows a first embodiment of a hearing system according to the present invention;
Fig. 2 shows a second embodiment of a hearing system according to the present invention; and
Fig. 3 shows a third embodiment of a hearing system according to the present invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The hearing system represented in Fig. 1 as a block diagram comprises two hearing devices Ia and Ib to be inserted into the left and the right ear, respectively, of a hearing device user. Each hearing device Ia, Ib comprises a microphone 2a, 2b, a signal processing unit 3a, 3b and a loudspeaker 4a, 4b, which is often called receiver in the technical field of hearing systems. As it is commonly known, the microphone 2a, 2b picks up sound that is processed in the signal processing unit 3a, 3b. The processing of the sound is dependent on a hearing loss of the hearing device user and can be described by a transfer function having a number of parameters to be defined. The parameters are defined either concurrently with the occurrence of a certain acoustic surround situation, or are defined in advance based on the hearing loss only, for example. It is pointed out that the identification of the momentary acoustic situation and the automatic adjustment of a hearing program or set of parameters, respectively, belonging to the identified surround situation, can basically be done as has been already described in WO-A- 01/20 965 and US-A-2002/037087 of the same applicant.
The sound picked-up by the microphones 2a, 2b is processed by the signal processing unit 3a, 3b and fed to the loudspeaker or receiver 4a, 4b. As this invention is related to a binaural hearing system, the afore-mentioned processing of acoustic signals is done in both hearing devices Ia, Ib. More advanced binaural hearing systems also exchange acoustic information or other relevant data via a link between the hearing devices. In this connection, reference is made to US-6 768 802 Bl of the same applicant.
Furthermore, each of the two hearing devices Ia, Ib of Fig. 1 comprises a control element 5a, 5b in the form of a toggle switch. Basically, the control element 5a, 5b allows the hearing device user to adjust a particular parameter of the transfer function that is used to process the acoustic signal in the signal processing unit 3a, 3b. A manual adjustment of a particular parameter or set of parameters is very important for hearing system users since a fully automated hearing system is often not feasible or often not desired. For example, it is very important that a hearing system user can have an influence on the volume control. Therefore, the parameter to be adjusted is the volume. According to the present invention, it is suggested to split the volume control into two function, namely in a increasing and a decreasing function, and to assign one function to the left hearing device Ia, and the other function to the right hearing device Ib. This general concept is applied to the embodiment depicted in Fig. 1 in that actuating the toggle switch 5a of the left hearing device Ia results in an increasing volume, while actuating the toggle switch 5b of the right hearing device Ib results in a decreasing volume. To split the volume adjustment function is in particular advantageous because adjustments made by the hearing device user gets more and more difficult because of the miniaturization of hearing device housings and, therewith, the miniaturization of the control elements 5a, 5b that are positioned on the hearing device housings .
In order to adjust both hearing devices Ia, Ib even though only one control element 5a, 5b is actuated, a link 6 between the hearing devices Ia, Ib is provided. Via this link 6, information regarding an adjustment of a particular parameter is transmitted to the other hearing device Ia or Ib, respectively. As a result thereof, pressing the toggle switch 5b on the hearing device Ib inserted into the right ear increases the volume by one step on both hearing devices Ia, Ib, whereas pressing the toggle switch 5a on the hearing device Ia inserted into the left ear decreases the volume by one step on both hearing devices Ia, Ib.
The exchange of information is used to align the left und right hearing device and is therefore also called synchronization of the hearing devices Ia, Ib of the hearing system. With regard to the embodiment of Fig. 1, it can be said that both hearing devices Ia, Ib are synchronized with respect to the volume setting.
In Fig. 2, a second embodiment of the present invention is depicted. This embodiment has the same structure as the one depicted in Fig. 1, i.e. two hearing devices Ia, Ib, which are interconnected via link 6, and its components. Although present, the signal processing units are not shown in Fig. 2.
The embodiment of Fig. 2 differs from the embodiment of Fig. 1 in that an additional control element 7 of the type rocker switch is present at the left hearing device Ia. The right hearing device Ib only is provided with a toggle switch 5b.
The rocker switch 7 provides for an additional functionality in that the particular parameter, which is adjusted in the manner explained in connection with the embodiment depicted in Fig. 1, is used to select one of two possible parameters. For example, the volume can be adjusted by the toggle switch 5a and 5b as long as the rocker switch 7 is in state I, and, again as an example, the balance can be adjusted by the same toggle switch 5a and 5b as long as the rocker switch 7 is in state II. Therewith, the hearing device user has a simple and more flexible tool to adjust more than one parameter. It is pointed out that the state of the rocker switch 7 is also transmitted to the other hearing device Ia, Ib in order that an actuation of a control element 5a, 5b on either hearing device Ia, Ib results in an adjustment of the correct parameter.
A further embodiment of the present invention is depicted in Fig. 3. Again, a hearing system is shown that comprises two hearing devices Ia, Ib. Apart from the embodiment according to Fig. 2, wherein only one hearing devices Ia comprises a second control element 7 in form of a rocker switch, each of the hearing devices Ia, Ib depicted in Fig. 3 comprises a second control element 7 and 8, respectively. Therewith, the possibility of selecting even more parameters is given in that four states I, II, III and IV are provided. The four states I, II, III and IV are encoded by the position of the two rocker switches 7 and 8. To fully define the state on both hearing devices Ia and Ib, the position of the rocker switches 7, 8 must be exchanged. This is done by transmitting corresponding information via the link 6 between the hearing devices Ia, Ib.
Furthermore, a remote control 10 is depicted in Fig. 3. The remote control 10 is operatively connected via a wireless link 9 to the hearing device Ia. It is pointed out that the remote control 10 can be used with any of the above- mentioned embodiments. Since the remote control 10 is used - among others - to select a parameter that is adjusted via the control elements 5a, 5b, the embodiment of Fig. 1 that has no additional control element 7, 8 become also more flexible in that the parameter becomes programmable by the hearing system user. In all of the above-mentioned embodiments of the present invention, the parameter that can be selected for adjustment by the control elements 5a, 5b can be one or a combination of more than one of the following:
- volume;
— balance;
— tonality; - strength of beam forming;
- set of parameters reflecting, on the one hand, "better understanding, selective hearing or more intelligibility" and, on the other hand, "more pleasant hearing or better all-around hearing" .
The last-mentioned set of parameter is referring to a technology developed by the applicant of this application.
The technology has been fully described in US-7 428 312 B2, for example.
