Definitions
- the present invention relates to a device for attracting attention.
- the device is preferably intended for use at pedestrian crossings, bus stops and accident locations.
- warning triangle which is normally made of a reflective material.
- Vehicles used, for example, for transporting school children have signs with flashing lamps or the like which are activated when the vehicle stops to let children alight or board.
- a primary object of the present invention is to propose a device of the kind defined in the introduction which according to a preferred embodiment is of extremely simple construction.
- Another object of the present invention is that it should be user-friendly.
- a further object of the present invention is that according to a preferred embodiment the user provides the necessary energy for the device to function.
- Fig. 1 depicts a plan view of the device according to the present invention, in which the side of the device which faces the observer is the side used for attracting attention
- Fig. 2 depicts a plan view of the device according to the present invention as seen from the opposite side as compared with Fig. 1;
- Fig. 3 depicts a side view of the device according to the present invention.
- Fig. 4 depicts a plan view corresponding to Fig. 1 but in which a rotatable disc which forms part of the device has changed position;
- Fig. 5 depicts the device according to the present invention installed close to a pedestrian crossing and indicates how the device is activated
- Fig. 6 depicts the device according to the present invention installed close to a bus stop and indicates how the device is activated;
- Fig. 7 depicts a first perspective view of an alternative embodiment of the device according to the present invention; and
- Fig. 8 depicts a second perspective view of the alternative embodiment according to Fig . 7.
- the device comprises a mounting means 1 which in the embodiment depicted takes the form of an oblong platelike element 3 with bent-over ends. As illustrated in Fig. 3, each of the bent-over ends comprises a number of right-angled bends which define an end portion 5 of the mounting means 1, which end portions 5 are situated on one side of the basic portion of the platelike element 3. The free ends of the two end portions 5 which form part of the mounting means 1 are directed towards one another.
- the device according to the present invention comprises also a disc 7 fastened rotatably to the mounting means 1 via a bearing means 9.
- the disc 7 is situated on the same side of the basic portion of the platelike element 3 as the end portions 5.
- the bearing means 9 has to be so configured that the disc 7 can easily be caused to rotate relative to the mounting means 1.
- the disc 7 is provided, on the side facing the observer, with reflectors 10 or luminous means, which reflectors 10 are situated diametrically on the disc 7.
- the reflectors 10 have a relatively limited diameter, and by way of non-limitative example it may be mentioned that they may have a diameter of the order of 5 cm.
- the reflectors 10 are preferably countersunk in the disc 7. Fig.
- the disc 7 of the device according to the present invention is so configured that the disc 7, when the device is observed in plan view, automatically places itself in the position of rest depicted in Fig. 1 when the disc 7 is not subject to any external influence.
- the reason why the disc 7 automatically places itself in the position of rest depicted in Fig. 1 is that the centre of gravity of the disc 7 is not at the centre of the disc 7, so gravitation automatically places the disc 7 in the position of rest depicted in Fig. 1.
- Fig. 4 has a double arrow P representing movement of the disc 7 away from its position of rest, resulting in the reflectors 10 not being situated behind the mounting means 1 but instead being exposed to an observer.
- Fig. 5 depicts the device according to the present invention installed on a column S for a pedestrian crossing sign.
- the attaching of the device to the column S may be effected in a suitable manner, which may entail using for the purpose some form of banding or the like.
- Fig. 6 shows how the device according to the present invention may be attached to a column S which supports a bus stop sign. Attaching the device to the column S may be effected in a suitable manner, which may entail using for the purpose some form of banding or the like.
- a person waiting for a bus sees the bus approaching, he/she causes the disc 7 to rotate by taking hold of it and manually putting it into rotation.
- the attention of the bus driver will thus be drawn by the reflectors 10 to the fact that a would-be passenger is waiting at the stop.
- the disc 7 reverts to its position of rest, in which the reflectors 10 are masked.
- the embodiment of the device according to the present invention depicted in Figs. 7 and 8 differs from the embodiment described above in the configuration of the mounting means 101. As illustrated in Figs.
- the mounting means 101 comprises two generally oblong first and second platelike elements 103A and 103B respectively with bent-over first and second end portions 105A and 105B respectively.
- Each of the platelike elements 103A and 103B is provided with bent-over end portions 105A and 105B at both ends.
- the bent-over end portions 105A and 105B are so adapted to one another that when the second end portions 105B are accommodated in the first end portions 105A, the result is the formation of a mounting means 101 which defines an intermediate space between the platelike elements 103A and 103B.
- the device according to the present invention comprises also a disc 107 rotatably fastened to the mounting means 101 via bearing means 109.
- the disc 107 is situated in the intermediate space between the platelike elements 103A and 103B.
- the bearing means 109 takes the form of a spindle or the like which is fastened to both of the platelike elements 103A, 103B.
- the bearing means 109 has to be so configured that the disc 107 can easily be caused to rotate relative to the mounting means 101.
- the disc 107 is in principle of the same configuration as the disc 7 described above, but reflectors 110 are disposed on both sides of the disc 107 and also have a parallelogram shape.
- the reflectors 110 preferably have in the circumferential direction of the disc 107 an extent which is smaller than the width of the platelike elements 103A, 103B of the mounting means 101.
- the disc 107 is preferably so configured that it automatically places itself in a position of rest when it is not subject to any external influence. In this position of rest, the reflectors 110 are masked by the platelike elements 103A, 103B when the device is observed in plan view.
- the reason why the disc 107 automatically places itself in the position of rest is that the centre of gravity of the disc 107 is not at the centre of the disc 107, so gravitation automatically places the disc 107 in said position of rest.
- the device according to Figs. 7 and 8 may be installed on a column in a manner substantially corresponding to the embodiment described above.
- the mounting means 1; 101 is preferably made of aluminium but some other material is also conceivable within the scope of the invention, and plastic seems to be a conceivable material.
- the disc 7; 107 is preferably made of plastic but it is also conceivable within the scope of the invention for the disc 7; 107 to be made of some other material, and aluminium seems to be a conceivable material.
- reflectors 10 are attached to one side of the disc 7.
- reflectors 10 are attached to both sides of the disc 7.
- the reflectors disposed on the respective sides are mutually opposite for the automatic position-setting function of the disc 7 to function.
- the mounting means needs to be modified so that all the reflectors are situated behind the mounting means when the disc 7 assumes a position of rest.
- installing the device should entail making sure that the reflectors 10 on one side of the disc 7 are masked by the column S when the device is in a position of rest.
- the disc 7 is provided with reflectors 10.
- the reflectors 10 may be replaced by, for example, light sources which may take the form of lamps or light-emitting diodes.
- the user imparts manually the necessary kinetic energy for causing the disc 7 to rotate.
- the device according to the present invention it is conceivable for the device according to the present invention to be provided with a drive means, e.g. an electric motor, which when activated causes the disc 7 to rotate. In such cases it is advantageous that the drive means should cause the disc 7 to rotate for a certain predetermined time, e.g. one minute.
