Abstract
The present invention relates to a display device (1), wherein a plurality of video images can be processed simultaneously and displayed to the user, and both of the signal processing units (4, 5) are used simultaneously when a single image is to be displayed, by means of the video decoder/scaler integrated circuit (2) having a plurality of video processing units.
Description
Description Title of Invention: A DISPLAY DEVICE
[ 1 ] Field of the Invention
[2] The present invention relates to a display device comprising a video decoder/sealer integrated circuit having a plurality of video processing units.
[3] Prior Art
[4] There are applications in the pictorial communication technology of the present time, which allow watching a plurality of images simultaneously. In the said applications, the images are displayed to the user simultaneously as Picture in Picture (PIP) or Picture and Picture (PAP). This way, for example in a television receiver, two channels can be watched at the same time. This application is performed by having the video images displayed on the screen after being processed separately in two parallel video processing units of the video decoder/sealer integrated circuits of the display devices. To this end, PIP/PAP mode is activated in the said device and the video processing units are enabled to operate together.
[5] The United States patent document US5675692, an application within the state of the art, discloses a double picture generation apparatus used in a video recording device. Images processed separately in two parallel video processing units enable the two images to be watched concurrently. The user can make a preference among options of single or double pictures.
[6] The United States patent document US2006221249, an application within the state of the art, discloses a system for reducing the noise on the video signals and improving the video image quality. According to the inventive system, the input signal is separated into two channels by using a filter. The video signals are processed separately in both of the channels and then they are united to obtain the final video signal.
[7] In PIP/PAP applications within the state of the art, the second video processing unit is used only when the double picture (PIP/PAP) mode is active, and when this mode is not used only the main video processing unit is utilized.
[8] Summary of the Invention
[9] The objective of the present invention is to realize a display device whose video decoder/sealer integrated circuit is used efficiently.
[10] Another objective of the invention is to realize a display device whose second video processing unit is used efficiently.
[11] The display device realized to fulfill the objective of the present invention and defined in Claim 1 and its dependent claims, comprises a plurality of video processing units for displaying a plurality of images simultaneously. In cases where only a single
image is processed and displayed, this image is improved by using a second video processing unit together with the main video processing unit. For this purpose, when the second image is not active, the main video signals are filtered and delivered to the second video processing unit and by using the feedbacks obtained from this unit, the main video processing unit can perform image improvement more efficiently. This way, contrary to the applications in the state of the art, the second video processing unit does not remain nonfunctional when a single image is being watched.
[12] Detailed Description of the Invention
[13] The display device realized to fulfill the objective of the present invention is illustrated in the accompanying figures wherein,
[14] Figure 1 is the schematic view of the inventive display device when the picture in picture (PIP) application is active.
[15] Figure 2 is the schematic view of the inventive display device when the picture in picture (PIP) application is not active.
[16] The components shown in the figures are numbered individually, where the numbers refer to the following:
[17] 1. Display device
[18] 2. Integrated circuit
[19] 3. Filter
[20] 4. Main signal processing unit
[21] 5. Second signal processing unit
[22] 6. Controller
[23] The inventive display device (1) comprises a video decoder/sealer integrated circuit
(2) having a main video processing unit (4) where the video signals of the main image (A) are processed, a second video processing unit (5) where the video signals of the second image (B) are processed, and a controller (6) which controls the video processing procedures; and a filter (3).
[24] The controller (6) provided in the integrated circuit (2) is connected to the main video processing unit (4) and the second video processing unit (5) where the video signals are processed simultaneously, and can communicate with the signal processing units (4, 5). In cases where the PIP/PAP mode is active and two different images are displayed to the user (Figure 1), the video signals that produce the main image (A) are processed in the main video processing unit (4) and the video signals that produce the second image (B) are processed in the second video processing unit (5). The controller (6) controls the video processing by receiving feedbacks related to the video signals from both of the video processing units (4, 5) during video processing, and enables to obtain a better image.
[25] The second signal processing unit (5) is used to improve the video signals of the
main image (A) when the picture in picture (PIP) or picture and picture (PAP) modes is not active.
[26] The filter (3) is used in cases where the PIP/PAP mode is not active, that is, where only the main image (A) is displayed to the user. The video signal entering the main signal processing unit (4) is passed through the filter (3) whereby the video signal entering the second signal processing unit (5) is obtained. This way, it enables changing of at least one image characteristic (contrast, color, brightness, etc.) of the video signal entering the main signal processing unit (4) and allowing it to also enter into the second signal processing unit (5) concurrently (Figure 2). Due to the fact that the video signal entering the second signal processing unit (5) is modified by being passed through the filter (3), the feedbacks that the controller (6) receives from the second signal processing unit (5) are different from the feedbacks it receives from the main signal processing unit (4). Thus, the main signal processing unit (4) where the signals forming the main image (A) are processed is controlled by the controller (6) upon receiving different feedbacks from both of the units. Therefore, for improving the video signals of the main image (A), not only the main signal processing unit (4) but also the second signal processing unit (5) is utilized.
[27] For example, in the case that the average brightness level in the pixels is used as the movement ratio information belonging to an image being processed, while the movement of the bright objects in the image can be detected, movement of the dark background might not be detected. However when the contrast of the same video signal is increased when being passed through the filter (3) before being input to the second signal processing unit (5), the movement information can be detected in the second signal processing unit (5) despite the dark background in the image. Thus, certain image feedbacks (movement information in the given example) which are impossible to obtain when the main signal processing unit (4) is used alone, can be obtained by the use of the second signal processing unit (5).
[28] The inventive display device uses the
