L'invention porte sur un appareil photovoltaïque concentrateur pour générer un courant électrique à partir de la lumière solaire qui comprend une cellule photovoltaïque ayant une zone active rectangulaire (généralement carrée) pour recevoir le faisceau incident et un ensemble concentrateur pour concentrer la lumière solaire sur la face avant en une forme qui est généralement carrée plutôt que circulaire et qui correspond à la zone active. L'ensemble peut utiliser un seul élément de focalisation cylindrique, généralement une lentille de Fresnel, effectuant une focalisation sur un générateur photovoltaïque de sorte qu'une bande formée par la lentille est appliquée sur une bande des cellules. Selon une variante, l'ensemble utilise deux lentilles cylindriques agencées pour focaliser la lumière solaire en une forme carrée agencée pour correspondre à une seule lentille. Celles-ci peuvent être utilisées en une position espacée de façon à prendre une bande formée par la première et à focaliser la bande dans la forme de la cellule, ou elles peuvent être deux lentilles de Fresnel dans une structure de lentille commune.
