Abstract

The present invention is an improved process for preparing a heterogeneous, supported hydrogenation catalyst via aqueous incipient wetness as well as the catalyst prepared by said process. The method includes use of a hydrophilic silica catalyst support, especially a hydrophilic silica catalyst support with a pore size distribution of 30 nm to 1,000 nm with substantially no pores below 30 nm. The method also includes use of a select group of promoters and certain atomic ratios of Group VIII metal to promoter. The heterogeneous, supported hydrogenation catalyst includes a Group VIII metal, a deactivation resistant metal such as rhenium, and a select promoter together with a hydrophilic silica catalyst support.
