Abstract

A fixing device enabling the remaining temperature distribution due to temperature hysteresis to be quickly reduced even if printing (fixing) is carried out with the remaining temperature distribution and enabling efficient printing (fixing) by shortening the waiting time until the printing (fixing) starts. The fixing device comprises heating means, temperature sensing means, and control means. The heating means has a magnetically permeable conductive layer made of a magnetic shunt material which has magnetism at room temperatures and loses the magnetism at and above a predetermined temperature. The temperature sensing means has temperature sensing members for sensing the temperatures in different positions arranged in the direction of the width of the heating means. The control means selects a temperature sensing member used for temperature control of the heating means from among the temperature sensing members according to the outputs of the temperature sensing members and controls the temperature of the heating means according to the output of the selected temperature sensing member.
