Abstract
Provided is a reciprocal engine which can reduce particulates by employing the homogeneous charge compression ignition method and activating initial combustion by means of high pressure ignition. The reciprocal engine comprises a piston (3) which is provided with a cylinder pressure rise relaxing means (11) capable of expanding the volume of a combustion chamber (4) of a cylinder (2) when an internal pressure of the combustion chamber (4) rises over a set level, thereby suppressing sharp rise of internal pressure of the combustion chamber at the initial stage of combustion and lowering the flame temperature. This enables reduction of NOx and prevention of occurrence of knocking, thereby realizing a reciprocal engine with an expanded range of use of the homogeneous charge compression ignition which is conventionally limited to use under low load.
