Abstract

A position detector comprising a magnetic field generating member (11) having three or more magnetized portions (13a, 13b, 13c, 13d), which have been alternately magnetized into north and south poles at a given length, the magnetized portions being disposed side by side along a movable direction (x), with non-magnetized portions 14 being interposed between the respective magnetized portions, and magnetic field detecting means (12) having two magnetic field detecting elements (15a, 15b), wherein, in a case that there are four or more of the magnetized portions, the magnetized portions (13b, 13c) located other than the ends in the movable directions have a given length (Wg) in the movable direction (x), the non-magnetized portions (14) have a given length (Wn) in the movable direction (x), and the magnetized portions (13a, 13d) located on the both ends in the movable direction (x) have a length (Wc), which is equal to or greater than 0.8(Wg) and less than (Wg), in the movable direction (x), thereby allowing changes in the magnetic fields generated by the magnetized portions (13a, 13d) at the both ends to be approximately symmetrical for the peak positions of the magnetic fields in backward and forward of the movable direction (x), so that the linearity can be improved.
