Description
METHODS FOR CELLULAR-DEVICE TELECOMMUNICATION USING INTERNET TELEPHONY
FIELD AND BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to methods for cellular-device telecommunication using Internet telephony.
The state-of-the-art in telecommunications has been advanced dramatically in the last decade. Systems known in the art currently make it possible to connect telephone calls via the Internet (e.g. Voice-over-IP (VOIP) and SKYPE).
Cellular telephone services allow a user to send messages {e.g. via e-mail, SMS, MMS, and instant-messaging services), as well as to access the Internet, and upload/download data. However, when a user calls from a digital cellular phone, the user primarily has only a single option to allow the mobile network operator (MNO) to connect the call. The user does not have the option to make calls using the Internet such as VOIP.
In the prior art, Lee et al, US Patent No. 6,847,632 Bl (hereinafter referred to as Lee '632, and incorporated by reference as if fully disclosed herein), teaches a method and apparatus for digital cellular Internet voice communications. Lee '632 teaches a digital cellular handset capable of supporting voice communications over the Internet, in addition to the digital cellular handset's usual mode of voice communications over the MNO/public telephony network. Internet protocol software such as H.323, session initiation protocol, and media gateway control protocol is stored within the digital cellular handset device run on an H.323 digital signal processor and H.323 microcontroller to packetize and unpacketize the digital data streams received by or transmitted from the handset. This enables the handset device to process the Internet data stream into audio communication.
Lee '632 use SMS to relay Internet-protocol (IP) addresses for the caller device and the "callee" device via the MNO. Once IP addresses have been obtained, the caller can connect to the Internet and connect to the callee.
It would be desirable to have methods for telecommunication via the Internet without the need to have special Internet-enabled cellular devices for the caller and callee.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is the purpose of the present invention to provide methods for cellular-device telecommunication using Internet telephony.
For the purpose of clarity, several terms which follow are specifically defined for use herein. The term "internet" is used herein to refer to a set of inter-connected computer networks. The most well-known internet is the Internet. The term "server" is used herein to refer to a computer system that provides services to other computing and communication systems.
According to preferred embodiments of the present invention, a cellular-device user is able to connect a call using his/her cellular device via a web-based platform, while never having to actually to enter the Internet or a website from his/her cellular device. In such an embodiment, a message is sent from the cellular device to a site server in order to initiate the call. Once the message is received by the site server, the phone call is placed.
Such methods enable all cellular phone calls to be handled using a web-based scheme, reducing airtime costs and potentially eliminating roaming charges (depending on the calling plan).
Therefore, according to the present invention, there is provided for the first time a method for cellular-device telecommunication using Internet telephony, the method including the steps of: (a) providing access to a site server from a cellular device, wherein the site server is configured to place calls via an internet; (b) sending a message from the cellular device to the site server, the message including a phone number of an intended- party device; and (c) establishing a communication channel via the internet, by the site server, using the phone number, between the cellular device and the intended-party device. Preferably, the message further includes at least one detail selected from the group consisting of: an identification of the cellular device, an identification of a user of the cellular device, and a name of an intended party.
Preferably, the message has a format selected from the group consisting of: an e- mail message, an SMS message, an MMS message, an instant message, a software template in the cellular device.
Preferably, the site server uses voice-over-IP to establish the communication channel.
Preferably, the step of establishing includes calling the cellular device upon placing a call to the intended-party device.
Most preferably, the calling is performed by the site server via a mobile network operator. According to the present invention, there is provided for the first time a site server for cellular-device telecommunication using Internet telephony, the server configured: (a) to provide access, for placing calls via an internet, to a cellular device; (b) to receive a message from the cellular device, wherein the message includes a phone number of an intended-party device; and (c) to establish a communication channel via the internet, using the phone number, between the cellular device and the intended-party device.
Preferably, the establishing of the communication channel is performed using voice-over-IP.
Preferably, the establishing includes calling the cellular device upon placing a call to the intended-party device.
Most preferably, the calling is performed by the server via a mobile network operator.
These and further embodiments will be apparent from the detailed description and examples that follow.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The present invention is herein described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a simplified flowchart of the operational scheme for using Internet telephony to connect calls originating from cellular devices, according to preferred embodiments of the present invention.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
The present invention relates to methods for cellular-device telecommunication using Internet telephony. The principles and operation for such methods, according to the present invention, may be better understood with reference to the accompanying description and the drawing.
Referring now to the drawing, Figure 1 is a simplified flowchart of the operational scheme for using Internet telephony to connect calls originating from cellular devices, according to preferred embodiments of the present invention. A cellular-device user plans to contact an intended party (Step 10). The intended party (who can be located anywhere in the world) is reachable via a device that may or may not have Internet access. The cellular-device user sends a message (e.g. using e-mail, SMS, MMS, instant-messaging services, and a device-software template) via an MNO to a site server (Step 12). The message includes the phone number of the intended party.
It is noted that the cellular-device user does not have to access the Internet or site server via a web browser. While the site server may be linked to a website having user account information, among other things, the site server itself may or may not be a website for viewing on the Internet. The site server serves as the phone-call processor.
The site server receives the message (Step 14), extracts the phone number (Step 16), and places the call to the intended party (Step 18). Once the call is placed by the site server, the cellular-device user receives a call to his/her cellular device for connecting the call (Step 20). The call to the cellular-device user may be connected from the site server via the MNO. Upon answering the call (Step 22), the communication channel between the cellular-device user and the intended party is established (Step 24).
While the invention has been described with respect to a limited number of embodiments, it will be appreciated that many variations, modifications, and other applications of the invention may be made.
