Description

A DUAL SPEED ELECTRONIC SPEED GOVERNOR SYSTEM AND
METHOD THEREOF
FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to speed governor for vehicles and, in particular, to a dual speed electronic speed governor system, which is adapted to control and limit the speed of vehicles at pre-defined programmable dual speed levels SET SPEED 1 and SET SPEED 2. Importantly, the dual speed governor of the invention would apart from serving the purpose of limiting the vehicle speed on well laid road would also advantageously favour maintaining vehicle speed while running on roads which are not well laid and cover rough or bumpy terrain. In particular, there is enormous degree of vibration of vehicles when driven on bumpy or graded roads and it is important to maintain or limit the speed of the vehicle while traveling on such bumpy / graded roads as, otherwise, it can be unsafe to drive and is found to cause discomfort to the passengers and also further degrades and deteriorates the condition of the motor vehicles particularly the conditions of the chassis or frame of the vehicle. The speed governor system of the invention would, therefore, favour attending to the much needed dual speed governor which would limit / control the speed of the vehicle both while driving on black top roads as well as on the bumpy / graded roads. The system is simple, cost effective and importantly user friendly to favour comfortable ride on vehicles and safeguard against unwanted accidents due to uncontrolled motion of vehicles in bumpy / graded terrains.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION AND PRIOR ART It is well known that a major problem on the highways is the amount of vehicular traffic on the road. Not only are there an ever-increasing number of vehicles but the excessive speed at which such vehicle travels due to the modern day technological advances is at times a cause of serious concern to its occupants as well as others in and around the speeding wheels. The excessive speed of vehicles is main contributor to accidents in general as well as injury and death associated with accidents when they occur. Therefore, to reduce accidents and deaths, such excessive speed of vehicles is essentially required to be controlled such that the controlled speed of the vehicle would favour decreasing accident frequency and severity. There have been attempts to regulate the speed of motor vehicles in the past but none have been successful. There have been attempts to sense the speed of the vehicle with a pulse width digital signal frame that is fed into an analog linear circuit and a DC voltage proportional to the speed. Such common practice of pulse width integration to obtain a voltage proportionate to speed has been around for many years Other devices known to control speed of vehicles use a reference speed, which is input to a keyboard device or via thumb wheels. Devices like these require very expensive computer means with sophisticated and complex man machine interface. To regulate engine speed a mechanical speed regulating governor such as an air vane mechanism or centrifugal flyweight mechanism sensitive to engine speed is normally used. For engines having carburetor with throttle valve is generally mechanically linked to both the governor and operator throttle control. Therefore, the throttle valve is acted upon by a first force related to commanded speed settled and a second force corresponding to the governor and related to actual engine speed. The disadvantage of these controlled system is the potential unreliability of cables, springs and linkages that are used to transmit and combine the inputs from the operator - commanded engine speed and the actual engine speed. Such component might bind, required lubrication or may fail from mechanical vibration of loading. Other disadvantage of known engine controlled system is the difficulty of mechanically adjusting the amount of movement of the throttle valve as it relates to the commanded engine speed setting or the actual engine speed and the difficulty of providing dampening of transients due to engine speed changes. Moreover, speed governors as described in the prior art are mostly confined to limiting of speed in the highway that is black top roads. While speed governors are generally understood to perform excellently and are accordingly well suited for limiting the vehicle speed on well laid roads, however, such known speed regulators are generally ill suited for maintaining vehicle speed over rough or bumpy roads as these systems cannot differentiate between the blacktop roads and bumpy roads. So, these systems cannot reduce the speed limit i.e., the maximum speed at which the vehicle can be run in the bumpy roads. There is enormous degree of vibration to the vehicle when the vehicle is driven on bumpy / graded roads which cause discomfort to the passengers and/or degrades or deteriorates a motor vehicle and particularly, the chassis or frame of the motor vehicle. Thus there exists a need for controlling the speed of vehicles not only while driving in the black top road but also while driving in the bumpy / graded roads. OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
The primary object of the present invention to provide a speed governor for automobiles which would avoid the problems / disadvantages discussed above and overcome the problems encountered in conventional methods of speed control / limiting of vehicles.
Yet another object of the present invention is directed to provide for speed governor for vehicles which would not only be excellently and well suited for limiting the vehicle speed on well laid roads but also favour by automatically changing the maximum speed limit value to a lower value lesser then the black top roads speed limit value, the speed of vehicle in case of the vehicle being driven on bumpy or graded roads thereby avoiding discomfort to the passenger and also avoid any degradation or deterioration of the condition of the motor vehicle particularly its chassis and frame condition.
Still another object of the present invention is directed to a dual speed electronic speed governor system for automobiles that would be adapted to limit / control the speed of the vehicle both while driving in the black top road and also while driving on the bumpy / graded roads.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide for a dual speed electronic speed governor system which would be adapted for simple and effective operating connection in an automobile and essentially involve dual speed limiting capacity involving pre-defined programmable set speeds to limit the speed while driving on black top roads and also while driving on bumpy / graded roads.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
Thus according to the basic aspect of the present invention there is provided a dual speed electronic speed governor system comprising: a speed sensor operatively connected to an electronic control unit which comprises a vibration sensor also and adapted to receive signals from said speed and vibration sensors; a fuel solenoid valve means adapted to open and close the valve to control the flow of fuel to engine operatively connected to said electronic control unit; said electronic control unit adapted for predefined dual speed control comprising (i) SET SPEED 1 determining the speed of the vehicle when it runs in Blacktop Roads and (ii) SET SPEED 2 determining the speed of the vehicle when said vibration sensors senses vibrations when the vehicle enters in Bumpy/Graded Roads.
In accordance with a preferred aspect of the invention the said dual speed electronic speed governor system comprises speed indicator unit including indicator means to indicate the proper operational condition of the electronic control unit preferably by glowing of a GREEN LED and indicator means to indicate when the vehicle reaches the SET SPEED limit preferably by glowing of a RED LED and/or operation of a buzzer alert. Preferably, the said speed indicator unit is adapted to be mounted on or near the dashboard of the vehicle for visual indication.
In accordance with another preferred aspect in the dual speed electronic speed governor system of the invention the said speed sensor is operatively mounted on the gear-box of the vehicle and adapted to withstand hazardous, dusty, corrosive and grimy environment.

Importantly, in accordance with the dual speed electronic speed governor system the said electronic control unit comprises means to set the predetermined dual speed limits for the vehicle. Thus, whenever the vehicle exceeds the predetermined speed limit the electronic speed control unit is adapted to maintain the flow of fuel at a constant rate whereby the speed of the vehicle is maintained at a set speed.

It is thus possible by way of the above discussed system of dual speed electronic speed governor of the invention to provide for limiting of speed of vehicles by setting predefined programmable set speed limit for the vehicle when it travels on black top road and when the same encounters uneven vibration prone roads.
Importantly, the above system of the invention essentially includes an electronic control unit incorporating a vibration sensor adapted to sense vibration while the car / vehicle encounters any bumpy / graded road to activate the speed control.
Also, the speed governor system of the invention includes speed sensors adapted to generate pulses in relation to the speed of the vehicle. Advantageously, the speed sensors are mounted on the gear box of the vehicle and adapted to withstand hazardous, dusty, corrosive and grimy environment.
The electronic control unit is adapted to receive signal from the speed sensor and activate the fuel solenoid to govern the speed of the vehicle.
The details of the invention, its objects and advantages are explained hereunder in greater details in relation to non-limiting exemplary illustration of the dual electronic speed governor system in accordance with the following accompanying figures.

Figure 1 is a schematic illustration of the electronic speed governor system in accordance with the present invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION The primary embodiment of the present invention is a dual speed electronic speed governor system comprising a speed sensor operatively connected to an electronic control unit which comprises a vibration sensor and adapted to receive signals from said speed and vibration sensors; a fuel solenoid valve means adapted to open and close the valve to control the flow of fuel to engine operatively connected to said electronic control unit; said electronic control unit adapted for predefined dual speed control comprising (i) SET SPEED 1 determining the speed of the vehicle when it runs in Blacktop Roads and (ii) SET SPEED 2 determining the speed of the vehicle when said vibration sensors senses vibrations when the vehicle enters in Graded Roads. In yet another embodiment of the present invention, the dual speed electronic speed governor system comprising speed indicator unit including indicator means to indicate the proper operational condition of the electronic control unit preferably by glowing of a GREEN LED and indicator means to indicate when the vehicle reaches the SET SPEED limit preferably by glowing of a RED LED and/or operation of a buzzer alert.
In still another embodiment of the present invention, the speed sensor is adapted to be mounted on the gear-box of the vehicle and adapted to withstand hazardous, dusty, corrosive and grimy environment.
In still another embodiment of the present invention, said fuel solenoid valve is adapted for fast switching action of the valve for accurate control of fuel flow.
In still another embodiment of the present invention, said speed indicator unit is adapted to be mounted on or near the dashboard of the vehicle for visual indication.
In still another embodiment of the present invention, said electronic control unit comprises means to set the predetermined dual speed limits for the vehicle.
In still another embodiment of the present invention, whenever the vehicle exceeded the determined speed limit the electronic control unit is adapted to maintain the flow of fuel at a constant rate whereby the speed of the vehicle is maintained at a set speed.
In still another embodiment of the present invention, the electronic control unit based speed governor provides for i. constant monitoring and governing of speed; ii. predefined speed settings for any speed; iii. controls the flow of fuel; iv. full power to engine is maintained un-altered; and v. facilitates smooth and accurate operation of the vehicle.
Another important embodiment of the present invention is a method to govern speed of a vehicle, said method comprising steps of; generating pulses by speed sensor in relation to speed of the vehicle; feeding generated pulses into electronic controlled unit to determine exceeding of speed by comparing the received pulse against pre-defined speed level; and activating fuel solenoid by the electronic control unit whenever the vehicle is found to exceed the pre-defined speed level to govern the speed of the vehicle.
In still another embodiment of the present invention, flow of fuel is maintained at a constant rate by the electronic speed control unit whenever the vehicle exceeds the predefined speed level and in turn maintains speed of the vehicle at a set speed.
In still another embodiment of the present invention, flow of the fuel into fuel injection pump of the vehicle is controlled through the fuel solenoid by opening and closing of fuel valve.
Reference is first invited to accompanying figure 1 which schematically illustrates the dual speed electronic speed governor system in accordance with the present invention. As clearly illustrated in said figure the electronic speed governor system of the invention basically involves an electronic control unit (ECU) which is adapted to sense the vibration of the vehicle during its traverse on bumpy / graded roads. The electronic control unit is also provided with speed sensor (SS) and on a speed indicator unit (SIU) to indicate the speed of the vehicle.
The electronic control unit thus advantageously operates based on the input from the vibration sensors and the speed sensor which provides for controlling / limiting of the vehicles speed and for such purpose the electronic controlled unit (ECU) is operatively connected to a fuel solenoid valve (FSV) which in turn cooperates to control the fuel injection pump (FIP) in the vehicle and in the process controls the speed of the vehicle. Also, the fuel solenoid valve has the residual flow arrangement to allow minimum amount of fuel to drive the vehicle at a minimum speed in the event of unit failure.
Thus, in the above speed governor system of the invention, the electronic controlled unit (ECU) is adapted to function as the brain of the system and receives signals from the speed sensor and vibration sensors to activate the fuel solenoid and govern the speed of the vehicle.
The speed sensor generates pulses in relation to the speed of the vehicle. Preferably, the speed sensor is mounted on the gear box of the vehicle and is adapted to withstand hazardous, dusty, corrosive and grimy environment. The electronic controlled unit (ECU) in the above speed governor system provides for pre-defined programmable dual speed setting comprising a SET SPEED 1 and a SET SPEED 2. The SET SPEED 1 is indicative of a normal set speed when the vehicle runs in a black top road such as road conditions when the set speed can be 120Km/Hr. As regards the SET SPEED 2, the same is indicative of SPEED 2 which is activated through vibration. When the vehicle enters any bumpy/ graded roads, the ECU senses the vibration and enters into SPEED 2 which can usually be set at about 80 Km/Hr, it may differ in different conditions.
Preferably, the electronic control based dual speed governor system of the invention also includes a speed indicator unit which is preferably mounted on or near the dash board for facilitating clear and ready visual indication of the speed of the vehicle. The speed indicator unit can comprise of LED based indication such as green LED to indicate that the electronic controlled unit is working and active and red LED with buzzer / sound indication to indicate when the vehicle reaches any of the dual SET SPEED limits.
Thus in accordance with an aspect of the invention, at first the speed sensor which is mounted on the gear box of the vehicle generates pulses in relation to speed and the same is fed into the electronic controlled unit (ECU). Normally, the electronic controlled unit controls the speed of the vehicle at SET SPEED 1 which is set for the traversal of the vehicle on black top roads. The electronic control unit is fixed with a vibration sensor and whenever the electronic control unit senses the vibration, it is immediately adapted to control the speed of the vehicle at SET SPEED 2 which is a set speed for bumpy/ graded roads. To function as above and provide for dual speed control as discussed above, the ECU is set with the predetermined speed limit of the vehicle.
The system of the invention is further adapted such that when the speed of the vehicle exceeds the predetermined speed level, the electronic control unit (ECU) is adapted to activate the fuel solenoid valve(FSV). The fuel solenoid is adapted to control the opening and closing of the fuel valve and controls the fuel flow into fuel injection pump of the vehicle. Thus whenever the vehicle is found to exceed the determined speed limit, the flow of the fuel is maintained at a constant rate thereby maintaining the speed of the vehicle at the desired SET SPEED.
The speed governor system of the invention thus enables constant monitoring and governing of speed at various speed limits of desired speed control for black top roads and also for bumpy / graded roads. The speed governor by way of providing of control of flow of fuel enables controlling the power of the engine for speed limiting and provides for a much required controlled smooth and accurate operation.
The dual speed electronic speed governor system of the invention by way of such dual speed control for i) black top road and also ii) bumpy / graded roads is directed to enhance safety and assure driver's comfort and confidence apart from reducing stress to the driver. The speed control system of the invention would provide improving concentration during driving and provide for the required safety and comfort of the occupants in the vehicles.
The system is further directed to economizing the fuel consumption to a level of upto about 10%, reduce wear and tear of parts and also increase the tyre life. The speed control achieved for black top roads and bumpy/graded road would further enhance engine life and performance apart from reducing, operating and maintenance costs and avoid any possible deterioration / degradation of vehicle condition and in the process ensure safety of passenger on road ensuring smooth and comfortable ride.
In the foregoing specification, the above illustrated embodiment of the dual speed electronic speed governor system of the invention as per accompanying figure 1 is a non-lining preferred embodiment. It will, however, be evident that various modifications and changes may be made thereto without departing from the broader spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims. Accordingly, the specification and drawings are to be regarded in an illustrative rather than a restrictive sense.
