Description

Hinge for a sectional gate.
The invention relates to a hinge for sectional gates .
Sectional gates are composed as an articulated wall, consisting of horizontally oriented panels coupled together by means of hinges.
The panels are guided between two guide rails.
Each guide rail comprises a straight portion to be mounted vertically on a side wall next to the gate opening, a curved portion to be mounted as a continuation of the upper free end of said vertical portion, and a straight horizontal portion to be mounted as a continuation of said curved portion, for example connected to the ceiling of a garage.
The guide rails are mounted such that both rails are positioned parallel to each other.
For the purpose of smooth guiding, all known sectional gates are provided of roller elements connected to the hinges connecting the panels.
All known sectional gates have the hinge axis and the axis of the roller element at a minimised distance or even in line. The purpose of the minimised distance is to avoid or to minimise the leverage of the friction forces originating from the cooperation of the roller elements with the guide rails.
This generally accepted idea has lead to the presently known hinges .
They have the disadvantage of being difficult to mount at the time the sectional gate is assembled and mounted.
Indeed, such a known hinge mainly consists of a generally flat plate and a V-shaped element connected thereto in a hinging manner.
Both the flat plate and the V-shaped element are provided of holes through which screws can be applied in order to connect these elements to the sectional gate .
The screws can though not be applied as the holes are not accessible at the time the roller element is in its final operable position which then covers the holes due to the desired compact construction where the distance between the hinge axis and the axis of the roller element is minimised. This implies that during mounting, the roller element needs to be removed from the hinge in order to be able to apply screws through the holes and to mount the hinge to the panels of the sectional gate.
The present invention aims to provide a solution to the above discussed and other disadvantages and to provide in a hinge which reduces the mounting effort by reducing the complexity and by shortening the mounting time of a sectional gate.
To this end the invention concerns a hinge for a sectional gate, the sectional gate comprising an articulated wall, comprising horizontally oriented panels coupled together by means of hinges whereon roller elements such as wheels are provided which can cooperate with guide rails, the hinges mainly consisting of a first plate element hingedly connected to a second plate element, whereby each wheel in its final position on the hinge is situated such that all connection means provided on the hinge for mounting the hinge on the panels are freely accessible and can be operated without the need to change the position of the wheel.
It should be clear that the ease of mounting is an important advantage as compared to the complicated mounting of the known sectional gates.
In order to better explain the characteristics of the present invention, the following preferred embodiment of a hinge for a sectional gate according to the invention is described as an example without being limitative in any way, with reference to the accompanying figures, in which:
figure 1 represents a schematic and perspective view of a sectional gate comprising hinges according to the invention; figure 2 represents on a larger scale the part as indicated by F2 in figure 1; figure 3 represents a hinge according to the invention; figure 4 represents an exploded view of the hinge of figure 3.
Figure 1 represents a sectional gate 1 comprising an articulated wall 2, consisting of horizontally oriented panels 3 coupled together.
The sectional gate 1 also comprises two guide rails 4, an electric motor 5 and a spring system 6.
Both guide rails 4 are parallel to each other.
The panels.3 are mutually connected by means of hinges 7, as in more detail represented in figure 2.
The articulated wall 2 is further provided of wheels 8, in this case provided on the hinges 7, suitable for cooperation with the guide rails 4 which are formed by
U-shaped profiles 9 wherein the wheels 8 are captured. Each wheel 8 is rotatably mounted on a free protruding end 10 of a cylindrical pen 11 mounted on a hinge 7, more in particular in this case captured in a cylindrical housing 12 formed by a bent metal plate 13.
As in more detail represented in figures 3 and 4, each hinge 7 mainly consists of a generally flat plate 14 hingedly connected with a generally V-shaped plate element 15.
The generally flat plate 14 is here provided of two holes 16, serving as connection means, for screwing this part of the hinge 7 to a first panel 3, and one border 17 is provided of a central recess 18 and two surrounding bent portions 19 to form a cylindrical cavity 20 wherein the hinge bolt 21 is provided.
The generally V-shaped plate element 15 is provided of a first central upstanding flange 22 and a second central upstanding flange 23 which tend towards each other and which come together to form a central distal ridge 24.
The first flange 22 is extended with a generally flat first plate portion 25 provided of holes 26 for screwing this part of the hinge 7 to a second panel 3.
Similarly, also the second flange 23 is extended with a generally flat second plate portion 27, oriented such that it is situated in the same plate as the first plate portion 25, in this case generally perpendicular to the second flange 23, and provided of holes 28, serving as connection means, for screwing the V-shaped plate element 15 to the second panel 3.
The second plate portion 27 is provided at its free border 29, distal from the flange 23, of a centrally positioned protruding plate portion 30 bent such that it forms a cylindrical cavity 31 embracing the hinge bolt 21.
The metal plate 13 whereon a cylindrical housing 12 is formed for holding the cylindrical pen 11 of the wheel 8, is connected with the second flange 23, in this case by means of a bolt and nut connection 32, where the bolt is brought through a hole 33 provided in the plate 13, and a stretched hole 34 in the second flange 23, such that the metal plate 13 can be rigidly connected in various positions with the second flange 23.
It is to be noted that, according to the present invention, the center of the holes 28 are situated at a distance Dl from the transition line L between the second flange 23 and the second plate portion 27, which distance Dl is at least such that the screws to be provided in the holes 28 can be manipulated when the cylindrical housing 12 formed by a bent metal plate 13 is mounted on the second flange 23, independent of its position. In the represented embodiment, the distance Dl is such that the holes 28 are entirely visible from a direction perpendicular to the second plate portion 27, i.e. Dl is larger than the height Hl to which the cylindrical housing 12 reaches above the second flange 23, plus half of the height H2 of the holes 28, which results in the geometrical formula
Dl > Hl + H2/2.
For easy application of the screws or the bolts in case they are provided of a wider head, it is even suitable to have the distance Dl to be greater than Hl plus half of the diameter or the greatest distance D2 of the heads provided on the bolts or the screws, resulting in the formula
Dl > Hl + D2/2.
It is though clear that Dl being larger than Hl might be sufficient in order to manipulate the screws .
The advantage of a hinge showing these characteristics according to the present invention is that during mounting, the wheels 8 need not to be dismantled from the corresponding hinges 7, which of course extremely facilitates the mounting of the hinges 7. Indeed, the distance between the hinge axis, in this case formed by the hinge bolt 21, and the axis of the roller element, in this case the centreline of the cavity 12 wherein the cylindrical pen 11 whereon the wheel 8 is mounted, is not necessary minimised.
This allows the mounting of the hinge 7 according to the invention while the wheel 8 is connected with the hinge 7 eventually in its operable position.
The present invention is by no means limited to the embodiment given as an example; on the contrary, such a hinge for a sectional gate and such a sectional gate can be realized according to different variants while still remaining within the scope of the invention.
