Abstract

Disclosed is a method for producing a polyvalent aralkyl alcohol by hydrolyzing an aralkyl halide having two or more haloalkyl groups. The aralkyl alcohol is produced by: mixing an aralkyl halide with a high-temperature/high-pressure water having a temperature of 150 to 350°C and a pressure of 0.5 to 50 MPa at a molar ratio of the aralkyl halide to the high-temperature/high-pressure water of 1:(5 to 10000) under a pressure equal to or higher than the saturated vapor pressure of the high-temperature/high-pressure water so that the temperature of the resulting mixture becomes 150 to 350°C; and hydrolyzing the resulting mixture at a temperature of 150 to 350°C without using any catalyst. When an apparatus shown in Fig. 1 is used, pure water (1) is feed into a heating unit (5) by means of a pump (2) at a predetermined flow rate so as to convert the pure water into a high-temperature/high-pressure water, while a solution of an aralkyl halide in a vessel (3) is mixed with the high-temperature/high-pressure water by means of a pump (4), and the mixture is introduced into a reactor (6) where the reaction is carried out.
