Abstract

A process for the production of catalysts useful for hydrocarbon decomposition comprising the stages of : a) -f orming a mixed urea solution comprising soluble salts of metal ion selected from the group consisting in: a group I transition divalent metal (Me (II) ) selected between Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn; Al (III), and Mn(II), at pH between 3 and 6, b) -ageing the mixed solution containing urea-Me(II)- magnesium ( II ) -aluminum ( III ) at a temperature between 70 and 100° C; c) - precipitating from the aged solution a double laminar hydroxide (HDL) consisting of said divalent metal (Me (II) ), magnesium, and aluminum, in order to form a catalyst precursor, d) -activating the catalyst precursor obtained in stage c) by reduction in an atmosphere containing hydrogen at atmospheric pressure, and at a temperature between 600 and 750° C. Catalysts obtained by said process, and a hydrogen and syngas production process employing said catalysts are also disclosed.
