Description

Photo-luminescent visual information sign
The object of the present invention is a photo-luminescent information sign to be placed in public spaces for the purpose of communicating visual information on occupational health and safety, road traffic, fire escape routes and fire protection conditions, as well as pictograms, both in good lighting and in the darkness.
As it is known from the patent no. 179419, there are known visual information signs made on a transparent plate being the obverse, with a coloured image layer on the inner surface, protected from the reverse side with an insulation and adhesive layer with a protective paper, as a result of which a self-adhesive plate is created. In known signs of the above structure, the inner surface of the transparent carrying plate, which is not covered with the coloured image layer, is covered with a photo- luminescent layer being the background for the image, wherein the transparent plate is covered with foil.
The main purpose of the visual information signs with a photo- luminescent layer is them being visible in the darkness for a maximum period of time. The technical requirements for photo-luminescent signs, in particular escape routes signs, indicating escape routes to people in an endangered public utility facility (for example in case of fire, bomb alarm etc. specify the minimum time of the signs being visible in the darkness in standard conditions. A photo-luminescent layer is excited by the inflow of light (exposure of a photo-luminescent layer), which results in the layer lighting in the darkness. Applying a photo-luminescent layer to an inner side of the transparent plate in known visual information signs results in limited inflow of exciting light as it is suppressed by the plate itself, which is never 100% transparent. The material for transparent plates is usually a pane of plastic, for example of acrylic, polyester or copolymers of hard PVC materials, which are always characterised by a specific light spectrum absorption, also in the scope resulting in excitation of a photo-luminescent materials and its lighting. At the same time, in known signs at least part of the light emitted through the exposed photo-luminescent layer placed behind the transparent plate, is selectively absorbed while going through the plate, which reduces the luminescence effect of the photo-luminescent layer, which considerably reduces the intensity of sign lighting, and thus reduces its visibility which is so necessary in case of danger.
The photo-luminescent sign according to the invention comprises the transparent plate 1, which is a construction carrier for the sign, and onto the outer layer of which a photo-luminescent layer 2_ is applied, being the content of the visual information sign, wherein the photo- luminescent layer and outer surface of the plate are secured with the protective foil 3 applied to them. The inner surface of the transparent plate 1, which is not covered with a photo-luminescent layer, is covered with a coloured layer 4, being the background for the image, on which the foam foil 5 adhesive on both sides is applied, advantageously in white colour, covered with an anti-adhesive protective layer 6 and securing the image from the inner (reverse) side of the transparent plate 1.
The structure of the sign according to the invention constitutes an integral pane, secured from both sides, of very advantageous photo- luminescent properties and considerably increased luminescence effect of the photo-luminescent layer 2 on the outer (obverse) layer of the transparent plate 1. Inflow of light without any limitations considerably exposes the photo-luminescent layer 2 with the full scope of the spectrum, and the layer absorbs the light and after a sudden cut-off of the light, shines in the darkness for a longer period of time with increased luminescence effect, as a result of which the sign according to the invention is clearly visible for a ling time. It is of great significance when it comes to evacuating people from a public utility facility, especially in limited visibility.
Applying the photo-luminescent layer 2 to the outer surface of the transparent plate 1 provides a considerable advantage of the sign according to the invention, that is the power of its luminescence. The outer surface of the plate 1 covered with the photo-luminescent layer 2 is additionally secured with the transparent foil 3, which is removed from the sign after it is fixed to the planned area. It protects the outer layer of the sign against possible damage in storage and transport The outer photo-luminescent layer 2 is made of the material resistant to changeable atmospheric conditions.
Use of the foam foil 5, adhesive on both sides, for protection of the coloured graphics layer, which is the background of the image in the inner surface of the transparent plate 1, makes it possible to remove the anti-adhesive protective layer 6 of the protective paper for the purpose of fixing the sign according to the invention directly in the place of destination, which enables time and cost saving.
The foam foil 5 adhesive on both sides is soft and flexible, which makes it possible to adjust the inner surface of the sign according to the invention to uneven or porous surfaces, for example walls painted with oil paints, or boards.
The photo-luminescent sign according to the invention is shown in an embodiment in the enclosed drawing, where fig. 1 shows an example visual information sign image, and fig. 2 shows the cross-section of the sign along the A-A line. The example does not limit in any way the scope of the invention's protection.
The photo-luminescent sign according to the invention comprises the transparent plate 1, being a construction carrier of the sign, to the outer surface of which a photo-luminescent layer 2 is applied, which constitutes the content of the visual information sign. The photo- luminescent layer and outer surface of the plate are secured with a cover of removable protective foil 3. The inner surface of the transparent plate 1, which is not covered with a photo-luminescent layer, is covered with the coloured layer 4, being the background for the image, on which white foam foil 5, adhesive on both sides, is applied, covered with the anti- adhesive protective layer 6 of the silicon paper. The transparent plate 1 is made of transparent polyester material, and the photo-luminescent layer 2 is a coating of the photo-luminescent paint, highly resistant to atmospheric conditions
The sign according to the invention is made in such a manner, that to the inner surface of the properly cut transparent plate 1, being a construction carrier of the sign, the coloured layer 4 is applied, being the background of the image, wherein the layer is dried. Then, to the outer surface of the transparent plate 1, the photo-luminescent layer 2 is applied, being the content of the visual information sign, and then it is dried. After the photo-luminescent layer has been dried, the entire outer surface of the transparent plate is covered with transparent protective foil 3, which is removed after fixing the sign to the place of destination. Then, to the inner surface of the plate 1 covered with the coloured layer 4 being the background for the image, the layer of the foam foil 5 is applied, adhesive on both sides, and secured with the anti-adhesive protective paper 6.
The coloured and photo-luminescent layers may be applied using the known techniques used in the application of decorative coatings. Photo-luminescent visual information signs are made in a simple way, which makes it possible to reduce production costs. They are characterised by light structure, easy application, durability and they do not require any maintenance, while at the same time provide good visibility of the image, depending on the viewing distance.
Luminescence examination of the sign according to the invention
The tested object was a photo-luminescent sample of the structure according to the invention, and a comparative sample, of the structure according to patent no. 179419.
The tests concerned two samples with the photo-luminescent layer and the same luminance properties and parameters, wherein the examined sample comprised the photo-luminescent layer applied according to the invention to the outer surface of the transparent plate 1, wherein the comparative sample comprised the photo-luminescent layer applied to the inner surface of the photo-luminescent plate 1, wherein for examination purposes the plates of the same pane of the transparent plate were used, wherein the plate was made of the hard polyester material and the photo-luminescent layer 2 was a result of applying a coat of the photo-luminescent paint of the same batch, using the silk- screen method, thus obtaining the same coating thickness. The test was conducted in line with DIN 67510-1 standard, after exposing both samples to the standard light source for the same period of time, then measuring variations in the value of luminescence in the function of time, after the removal of the standard light source. The results of mapping the luminescent material were then reviewed with reference to the national standard of light intensity by using light intensity standards of the first grade, no. 4A and 6A, of the colour temperature of 2856K, and standard diffuser EG&G no. 179. Measurement of luminescence and time of phosphorence fading after sample exposure was made after the sample had been exposed to the 150W xenon lamp for the period of 5 minutes, from the distance of 80 cm, in a light intensity on the surface of the sample of lOOOlx. The test was conducted by the Central Measurements Office in Warsaw.
Results of the test are shown in table 1
The values in the table are the mean values of two measurements.
Measurement accuracy is 10%. Tablel.
Figure imgf000010_0001
The results of carried out tests clearly indicate that luminescence is higher in the tested samples and the luminescence fading period is longer in the case of the signs of the structure according to the invention against the comparative sample - by 420 min.
Strength tests of the sign according to the invention
The samples such as the ones for luminescence examination were subject to strength tests after the aging period of one year, in order to determine:
- resistance to outdoor atmospheric conditions in the winter-summer cycle,
- adhesion to the base The tested samples did not show any disadvantageous changes in adhesion of the photo-luminescent layer and colour of the graphics, nor did they show any deterioration of mechanical and usability properties against the comparative samples.
