Background Art
[2] In general, manhole covers for preventing odors or pests are installed on roadside drains, draining water from roads thorough a plurality of drainage holes formed in the manhole covers.
[3] The prior art manhole cover normally comprises a manhole cover (manhole plate), a drain guide plate and a gate. The manhole cover is made of cast iron and the drain guide plate and the gate are usually made of galvanized iron sheets. In assembling and constructing, a manhole cover is installed using the following procedure. Firstly, the gate is assembled on the drain guide plate. Secondly, the drain guide plate with the gate is put on the inner rim (the jaw part) of the frame which is installed around the upper rim of the manhole. And lastly, the manhole cover is installed on top of the manhole.
[4] However, as mentioned above, the prior art manhole cover is separately composed of a manhole cover, a drain guide plate and a gate, thus suffering from excessive manufacturing cost and an troublesome installation procedure. And the largest problem of the prior art manhole cover is that sands, garbage, leaves or branches are introduced with filthy water and accumulated onto the drain guide plate, making the drain guide plate not properly operational, so that offensive odors and pests can be introduced.
[5] Furthermore, once sands, garbage, leaves or branches are accumulated, the flow of rainwater and sewage can be obstructed, thus causing drainage problems and even backflow during heavy rain, making management of the manhole difficult and making the area around the manhole aesthetically not pleasing. Best Mode for Carrying Out the Invention
[21] Detailed description is made hereinafter for a preferred embodiment of a cover preventing an offensive odor according to the present invention with reference to the attached drawings.
[22]
[23] 1. The first embodiment
[24] FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a cover preventing an offensive odor, FIG. 2 is a bottom perspective view of the cover preventing an offensive odor and FIG. 3 is a sectional view which is showing how the cover preventing an offensive odor is implemented and used according to the first embodiment of the present invention.
[25] As shown in FIG. 1 to FIG. 3, the cover preventing an offensive odor according to the first embodiment of the present invention includes a frame 100 which is adjacent to the bottom surface of a manhole cover 10, a pair of supporting and fixing plates 200 which are formed under the bottom surfaces of the upper and under transversal sides of the frame 100, hinge parts 300 which are formed at the edges of left and right sides of the supporting and fixing plate 200 and rotation parts 400 wherein axes of the hinges 430 which are inserted in the hinge parts 300 are formed for enabling rotational opening and closing of a gate 420.
[26] The manhole cover 10 can be manufactured out of easily cas table materials such as ductile cast iron (FCD), cast iron (FC) or synthetic resin. It is preferred that the manhole cover 10 is manufactured out of synthetic resin or ductile cast iron. Because ductile cast iron is superior in strength and hardness to cast iron and synthetic resin is easily manufactured and lightweight. And, the manhole cover 10 is wherein a plurality of drainage holes which rainwater, sewage or waste water flow through are formed.
[27] The frame 100 is formed in rectangular shape, and adjacently attached to the bottom surface of the manhole cover 10.
[28] It is preferred that the frame 100 and the manhole cover 10 are attached via bolts, which are conventionally used in this field. However the frame 100 and the manhole cover 10 can be attached via other methods.
[29] There are provided two supporting and fixing plates 200 in a shape of an isosceles triangle which are integrally formed with the frame 100 respectively under the each bottom surfaces of the upper and under transversal sides of the frame 100. And there are provided four hinge parts 300 which are formed respectively at the edges of left and right sides of the each supporting and fixing plate 200. Accordingly, there are a pair of hinge parts 300 at the left side edges of the supporting and fixing plates 200, and there are another pair of hinge parts 300 at the right side edges of the supporting and fixing plates 200.
[30] Rotation part 400 is manufactured via injection molding method wherein a rectangular iron bar is inserted in a mold frame, and is wherein a pair of axes of the hinges 430 which are inserted in the hinge parts 300 are formed respectively at the front and back sides thereof. And, a weight part 410 and a gate part 420 are formed in the opposite direction of an axis of a hinge 430, and the rotation part 400 can be rotated after the axes of the hinges 430 are inserted in the hinge parts 300.
[31] Accordingly, a rotation part 400 is attached to a pair of hinge parts 300 formed in the left side of the supporting and fixing plate 200, and the other rotation part 400 is attached to the other pair of hinge parts 300 formed in the right side of the supporting and fixing plate 200, making two rotation parts 400 attached to the frame 100. And the bottom surfaces of the supporting and fixing plates 200 are formed adjacently to the upper surface of the gate part 420.
[32] The rotation part 400 must be formed in a way that the weight part 410 is heavier than the gate part 420, and it is preferred that the weight ratio of the gate part 420 to the weight part 410 is 1:3.
[33] Thus, the rotation part 400 is formed in a way that the weight part 410 and the gate part 420 are formed integrally in the opposite direction of an axis of a hinge 430, with the center of gravity of the rotation part 400 leaning toward the weight part 410, making a difference in weight between the left and right side of the rotation part 400 with an axis of a hinge being positioned in the middle.
[34] Accordingly, the rotation part 400 is leaning toward the weight part 410, so that the gate part 420 is rotating up and the weight part 410 is rotating down. Because the gate part 420 is rotating up, the gate part 420 stays adjacent to the supporting and fixing plate 200.
[35] In normal situation without flowing water, the rotation part 400 stays adjacent to the supporting and fixing plate 200, whereby making the manhole closed and thus preventing an offensive odor. When water is flowing into the manhole the water fills up on the gate part 420, then the total weight of the water and the gate part 420 becomes heavier than the weight of the weight part 410, thus automatically opening the gate part 420. After the water empties out into the manhole, the gate part 420 is closed because the weight part 410 becomes heavier than the gate part 420 again, and the gate part 420 becomes adjacent to the supporting and fixing plate 200.
[36] On the other hand, the gate part 420 is wherein inclined plane is formed for smooth draining of the water flown through the manhole cover 10. A half of the inclined plane is formed to have an angle of 10 to 30 degrees, and the other half is formed to have an angle of 30 to 60 degrees, thus being doubly angled.
[37] As the gate part 420 is formed to have a doubly angled shape, the opening angle of the gate part 420 becomes wider while the gate part 420 is opened, thus increasing the amount of sewage flow and preventing the accumulation of sands, leaves, branches and such on the gate part 420.
[38] And, a reinforcing part 450 is formed behind the gate part 420 for preventing torsion and flex. The reinforcing part 450 prevents torsion and flex even if a lot of water gathers on top of the gate part 420, thus enabling perfect sealing between the supporting and fixing plate 200 and the gate part 420, and thus preventing an offensive odor smoothly.
[39] And a preferred embodiment of the manhole cover 10 may comprise materials which are resistant to water such as aluminum, stainless steel, synthetic resin or metals with surface treatment, such as galvanized metals like sheet zinc.
[40] As shown above, the cover preventing an offensive odor according to the present invention is implemented and used as following.
[41] As shown in FIG. 3, as rainwater, sewage or waste water flow through the manhole cover 10 into the manhole, the water is guided smoothly along the inclined planes of the gate part 420 and gathered on top of the gate part 420. The gathered water adds weight to the gate part 420, so that the gate part 420 rotates down and the weight part 410 rotates up. As the rotation part 400 rotates, the gate part 420 is opened and the water is drained.
[42] If there is a large amount of water flown onto the gate part 420, then the water adds more weight and rotates the gate part 420 more severely, making more gap between the gate part 420 and the supporting and fixing plate 200, thus draining more water into the manhole.
[43] And, the gate part 420 is formed to have doubly-angled shape which has wider angle of inclination, thus preventing the accumulation of sands, garbage, leaves and branches or the like.
[44] On the other hands, in normal situation without flowing water, the gate part 420 becomes adjacent to the supporting and fixing plate 200, thus sealing the manhole and preventing an offensive odor, poisonous gases, pest or waterborne diseases caused by the accumulation of garbage in the drainage. [45]
[46] 2. The second embodiment
[47] FIG. 4 is a perspective view of a cover preventing an offensive odor according to the second embodiment of the present invention. [48] As shown in FIG. 4, the cover preventing an offensive odor according to the second embodiment of the present invention comprises also an elastic material 500 attached to the rotation part 400 , thus adding pressure onto the weight part 410. [49] The parts thereof except for the elastic material 500 are the same as in the first embodiment, so that more detailed description is not required. [50] It is preferred that the elastic material 500 according to the second embodiment of the present invention is a ring spring, however elastic materials such as rubber or synthetic resin also can be used. [51] The elastic material 500 is attached to the rotation part 400 so that gate part 420 can be adjacent to the supporting and fixing plate 200 more firmly, thus sealing the manhole more firmly. [52] Accordingly, the elastic part 500 is always adding pressure onto the weight part 410, so that the gate part 420 can be more adjacent to the supporting and fixing plate 200 due to the restoring force of the elastic material 500. And once the gate part 420 is opened by flowing water and the water is drained out, the gate part 420 can be adjacent to the supporting and fixing plate 200 more firmly due to the restoring force of the elastic material 500. [53] Although the preferred embodiment of the present invention has been disclosed for illustrative purposes, the present invention is not limited to the preferred embodiment.
Furthermore, those skilled in the art will appreciate that various modifications, additions and substitutions are possible, without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention as disclosed in the accompanying claims.
