Definitions
- the present invention relates to a tank opening device and a fluid dispenser device, more particularly a dry powder inhaler, comprising such an opening device.
- Dry powder inhalers are well known in the state of the art. There are different kinds.
- a first type of inhaler contains a reservoir receiving a multitude of doses of powder, the inhaler being provided with dosing means allowing each actuation to separate a dose of this powder from the reservoir to bring it into an expulsion conduit to to be distributed to the user.
- Another type of inhaler is to package the doses of powder in pre-dosed individual tanks, then to open one of these tanks each actuation of the inhaler. This implementation ensures a better seal of the powder, since each dose is open at the time of its expulsion.
- various variants have already been proposed, such as an elongated blister strip or blisters arranged on a rotating circular disk.
- Inhalers with individual reservoirs, such as capsules, which are to be loaded into the inhaler just prior to use thereof have also been described in the state of the art.
- the advantage of these devices is that it is not necessary to store all the doses inside the device, so that it can be reduced in size.
- the use is more complex, since the user is obliged to load a capsule in the inhaler before each use.
- All types of inhalers described above and existing have advantages and disadvantages related to their structure and operation. Thus, with some inhalers, there is the problem of accuracy and reproducibility of the dosage at each actuation.
- the effectiveness of the distribution is also a problem that presents itself with a number of inhalers.
- One solution to this specific problem has been to synchronize the expulsion of the dose with the inhalation of the patient. Again, this could cause drawbacks, that generally in this type of device, the dose is loaded into an expulsion conduit prior to inhalation, and then the expulsion is synchronized with the inhalation.
- WO 2006/079750, WO 2005/037353 and DE 19757208 disclose piercing devices of the state of the art.
- the present invention aims to provide a tank opening device and a fluid dispenser device, in particular a dry powder inhaler, which do not reproduce the aforementioned drawbacks.
- the present invention aims to provide such devices that are simple and inexpensive to manufacture and assemble, reliable in use, ensuring a metering accuracy and reproducibility of the dosage at each actuation, providing optimum performance in the effectiveness of the treatment, allowing to distribute a large part of the dose in the areas to be treated, especially the lungs, safely and effectively avoiding the risks of overdoses, of dimensions as small as possible, while ensuring a seal and absolute integrity of all doses until their expulsion.
- the present invention also aims to provide such devices for which the variability of the dose is reduced.
- the present invention therefore relates to an inhalation device comprising an opening device for opening an individual reservoir containing a single dose of fluid, such as powder, said reservoir comprising a closing wall, said opening device having hollow piercing means adapted to pierce said reservoir closure wall, said hollow piercing means being connected to an expulsion channel for conveying the powder to a dispensing orifice of said inhalation device, said dispensing device opening having at least one air channel connected to said expulsion channel, so that upon inhalation, a flow of air passing through said at least one air channel mixes into said expulsion channel to the flow of air and powder exiting the reservoir through said hollow piercing means, said at least one air channel being formed by a through hole made in a wall said piercing means, said at least one through hole being oriented substantially parallel to said expulsion channel.
- said at least one air channel is formed in a wall of the piercing means which does not penetrate inside the reservoir.
- said at least one air channel is substantially rectilinear.
- said at least one air channel has a substantially constant section along its length.
- said at least one air channel has a variable section along its length.
- said piercing means comprise two opposite piercing ends separated by a gap.
- said piercing means comprise two air channels arranged symmetrically between said two piercing ends.
- the inflow of incoming air enters the open reservoir outside of said piercing means.
- said piercing means comprise at least one external projection, such as a rib, to form at least one passage for the air entering the open reservoir.
- said opening device is activated by inhalation of the user.
- a reservoir is moved against said opening device, such that said reservoir is open while a first inhalation flow enters the reservoir passing outside said piercing means. , effecting the expulsion of the fluid product to the expulsion channel by passing inside said piercing means, said first inhalation flow mixing in the expulsion channel with a second inhalation flow passing through said at least one air channel.
- said opening device is fixed relative to the body of the inhalation device during the opening of the reservoir.
- the tanks are made in the form of an elongated strip comprising a plurality of individual tanks arranged one after the other.
- FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the piercing element of FIG. 1;
- FIG. 3 is a cross-sectional view of a portion of an inhaler comprising a piercing element as represented in FIGS. 1 and 2, and
- FIG. 4 to 6 are schematic views of alternative embodiments of a piercing element.
- the invention mainly relates to a device for opening individual reservoirs for a dry powder inhaler. It applies in particular to inhalers in which the reservoirs 20 are formed by blisters arranged one behind the other on a flexible band (not shown). Each tank or blister 20 has a sealing wall 21 and contains a dose of powder.
- this band progressively progresses with each actuation, an indexing wheel (not shown) being provided to advance the band and to receive a blister to be opened at each actuation.
- the invention applies in particular to an inhaler in which said indexing wheel is displaceable not only in rotation, but also in the direction of piercing means 40 which remain fixed relative to the body of the inhaler.
- said indexing wheel is displaceable not only in rotation, but also in the direction of piercing means 40 which remain fixed relative to the body of the inhaler.
- other applications are possible.
- the opening device comprises piercing means (or piercing elements) 40 adapted to pierce the closure wall 21 of a blister 20 at each actuation.
- This piercing element 40 is hollow and defines an expulsion channel 69. It comprises at least one piercing end, preferably two piercing ends 42, 43. These ends piercing pierce the closure wall 21 and penetrate inside the blister.
- Each piercing end 42, 43 has an opening 45 allowing the powder to exit the blister to be transported in the expulsion channel.
- the opening device is triggered by inhalation of the user, and the inhalation flow enters the open blister, mixes with the powder and drives it to the expulsion channel through the or the opening (s) 45 of the piercing end (s) 42, 43.
- the inhalation flow enters the inside of the open blister passing outside the piercing element. 40, as represented by the arrow A in FIGS. 4 to 6.
- the opening device comprises at least one air channel 100 also connected to the expulsion channel 69 and through which flows an air flow (arrow B) which during the inhalation is mix in the expulsion channel 69 with the flow of air and powder (arrow A) coming out of the blister 20 and passing inside the hollow piercing element 40.
- This flow of air thus promotes a efficient and reliable transport of the powder expelled from the blister to the dispensing orifice 1 of the inhaler. It also reduces the variability of the dose.
- these air channels 100 formed in the piercing element 40 have industrially reproducible molded element geometries, making it possible to stabilize the performances and the fluidic parameters.
- the flow B (geometrically controllable industrially) can be sufficiently preponderant compared to the main flow A (more difficult to control) to reduce the overall variability of performance.
- This air channel 100 may be rectilinear, parallel to said expulsion channel 69 and of constant cross section, as represented in FIGS. 1 to 3. In a variant, it could be of any shape, of variable section, for example frustoconical, depending on the desired effects as it mixes with the flow of air and powder in the expulsion channel 69.
- said at least one air channel 100 is formed on a wall of the piercing element 40 which does not enter the blister 20, preferably a wall substantially perpendicular to the expulsion channel 69, as shown in Figures 1 to 3.
- Each air channel 100 is thus formed by a through hole formed in a wall of the piercing member 40, said through hole being oriented substantially parallel to said expulsion channel.
- the piercing means 40 preferably have a suitable shape such that the cut wall portions of the blister 20 bend inwardly of the blister without covering the openings formed by these piercing means 40.
- these piercing means 40 comprise at least two opposite drilling ends 42, 43 which are separated from each other by a suitable gap 44.
- These piercing means 40 advantageously create a central fold with cut-off wall portions allowing the formed openings to not at all be covered by any part of cut walls.
- each piercing end 42, 43 is cup-shaped, said cups being arranged back to back and having sharp edges.
- the incoming air (arrow A) enters the open blister or passes outside of said piercing means 40.
- the piercing element 40 comprises two air channels 100 arranged symmetrically between the two piercing ends 42, 43, as shown in FIGS. 1 to 3.
- any number of air channels 100 which could be of different dimensions from each other, is also possible.
- these piercing means 40 are preferably fixed relative to the body of the inhaler.
- these piercing means may also be movable during the opening phase of the reservoir.
- the piercing means could move toward the reservoir as the reservoir moves toward the piercing means.
- the reservoir and the piercing means could also be envisaged for the reservoir and the piercing means to move in the same direction during actuation, the reservoir moving more rapidly in this direction so that it comes into contact with said means of rotation. piercing to be opened.
- the inhaler further comprises a dispensing chamber 70 which is intended to receive the dose of powder after opening a respective reservoir.
- this distribution chamber 70 is provided with at least one ball 75 (not shown) which moves inside said chamber 70 during inhalation, to improve the distribution of the air and powder mixture after opening a tank, in order to increase the efficiency of the device.
- the opening means in particular the piercing means 40, are formed directly on said distribution chamber 70, for example at the end of a channel 69, forming a channel. Expulsion, leading to said chamber 70.
- the individual reservoirs or blisters 20 are formed on an elongated strip (not shown), which may be stored as a coil within the body of the inhalation device.
- the blister strip can be moved by the user advantageously by means of the guide wheel (not shown) which advantageously comprises at least one, preferably several recesses whose shape corresponds substantially to that of the blisters.
- this guide wheel rotates, it drives the blister strip.
- other means for advancing the blister strip for example by providing a profile on the lateral longitudinal edges of the blister strip, said profile being adapted to cooperate with means of blistering. appropriate training.
- holes along the lateral edges of the blister strip could also be used to advance the blister strip by means of toothed wheels cooperating with said holes.
