Abstract

This invention provides a polymer electrolyte for a fuel cell, which has a high ion exchange capacity site and a high level of conductivity. The polymer electrolyte comprises an electrolyte site comprising a sulfonic acid group introduced into a site represented by formula (1) or its derivative and having an ion exchange capacity of not less than 3.0 meq./g. -[Ar(R1)m(Ph)(X1)]n- (1) wherein Ar represents a benzene ring containing 4 to 6 substituents; Ph represents a phenyl group bonded to Ar; X1 represents a linking group bonded to Ar and selected from -O-, -S-, and -NH-, and, when a plurality of X1s are present, they may be the same or different; R1 represents a substituent bonded to Ar and is a hydrogen atom, an aryl group having 6 to 30 carbon atoms, or a substituted aryl group, and, when a plurality of R1s are present, they may be the same or different; n is an integer of not less than 1 and not more than 10000; and m is an integer of 1 to 3.
