Abstract
Provided is a method for forming an alignment film having high alignment regulation performance. A liquid crystal optical element and an optical head device having excellent optical characteristics and reliability are also provided. In the method, after coating a substrate with an alignment film composition, which includes fine particles and a matrix component having an ion beam etching rate higher than that of the fine particles, heat treatment is performed to the alignment film composition to advance polymerization of the matrix component. Then, the heat-treated film composed of the alignment film composition is diagonally irradiated with an ion beam, and a groove parallel to the incoming direction of ions is formed. The alignment film composition preferably has the fine particles as a main component. A plasma beam may be applied, instead of the ion beam.
