Definitions
- the present invention relates to a two-step-pump with a piston sub-assembly comprising two concentric pistons, the bigger diameter piston being used to increase the oil flow to an outlet connection until the pressure at the outlet connection has reached a predetermined value, whereafter the small diameter piston continues to pump oil after the bigger piston has stopped pumping oil to the outlet connection.
- US patent No. 5,575,627 discloses a pump including a high pressure portion and a low pressure portion. During low pressure, high volume operation, pressure produced in the high pressure portion of the pump is applied to drive a large area piston in the low pressure portion of the pump. Once the pressure in the high pressure portion of the pump raises to a cut-off pressure, at which time it takes excessive power to drive the large area piston, a cut-off valve opens to allow the high pressure portion of the pump to directly pump a relatively lower volume of fluid per stroke at a relatively higher pres- sure.
- This pump is however manually operated.
- US patent No, 6,190,142 discloses a manual air pump including an outer tube and an inner tube coaxially mounted in the outer tube.
- the inner chamber is defined in the inner tube.
- An outer chamber is defined between the outer tube and the inner tube.
- a head is coupled to first ends of the inner and outer tubes.
- the head includes a main passage communicated with the inner chamber and the outer chamber for supplying air to an object to be inflated.
- An inner piston rod has a first end with an inner piston slidably received in the inner chamber.
- the inner piston separates the inner chamber into a first chamber section adjacent to the head and a second chamber section distal to the head.
- An outer piston rod has a first end with an outer piston slidably received in the outer chamber.
- the outer piston separates the outer chamber into a third chamber section adjacent to the head and a fourth chamber section distal to the head.
- a handle is secured to second ends of the inner and outer piston rods to move therewith.
- a release passage is provided for communicating one of the first chamber section and the third chamber section with environment.
- a switchable valve is mounted in the release passage, wherein the release passage is blocked when the switchable valve is in a first status for high volume/low pressure pumping, and wherein the release passage is opened when the switchable valve is in a second status for high pressure/low volume pumping in which air is only flowable from the one of the first chamber section and the third chamber section to environment.
- the aspect of the invention is to provide a two-step-pump comprising two concentric pistons, said pump being more simple than previously known.
- a two-step-pump is according to the invention characterised in that when the piston sub-assembly is moved up, two inlet one-way valves to the underside of the two pis- tons open and oil is delivered to the underside of the two pistons, whereafter the piston sub-assembly is moved down, preferably by means of a gas under pressure and the one-way inlet valves are closed, while two outlet one-way valves open, and when the outlet pressure has reached a predetermined value controlled by means of a relief valve, the relief valve opens and the oil pumped by the bigger diameter piston is led back to the oil tank, the outlet one-way valve being kept closed because of the high pressure, whereafter the small diameter piston continues to pump at a high pressure.
- a two-step-pump is obtained which is more simple than previously known.
- the moving down of the piston sub-assembly may be per- formed by means of a gas under pressure.
- the gas pressure can be approximately 7 bar.
- Figs. 1a, 1b, and 1c illustrate the principles of the two-step-pump in three different positions
- Fig. 2 shows a perspective view of the two-step-pump in a specific embodiment
- Fig. 3 shows a sectional view of the two-step-pump illustrated in Fig. 2.
- the two-step-pump comprises a house including a piston sub-assembly with two concentric pistons in one piece, the bigger diameter piston 12 being used to increase the oil flow to an outlet connection 4 until the pressure and the outlet connection 4 has reached a predetermined value, whereafter the small diameter piston 11 continues to pump oil after the bigger piston 10 has stopped pumping oil to the outlet connection 4.
- the two-step-pump with the piston sub-assembly is connected to a small air piston 6 for controlling the function of the two-step-pump.
- An oil tank is connected to the inlet valves 1 , 2 of the two-step-pump.
- the two-step-pump is further provided with an oil out- let valve 4.
- the two-step-pump functions in the following way:
- Air under pressure is switched on and enters through an air orifice 14 to the back vol- ume of the air piston 6 and is thereafter delivered through an orifice 13 from the back volume of the air piston 6.
- the air from the orifice 13 is delivered to the volume over the bigger diameter piston 12 of the two-step-pump.
- the bigger diameter piston 12 is now moved down, conf. Fig. 1a.
- the oil inlet valves 1 , 2 are closed due to the pressure created by the piston 10.
- the outlet valves 3, 4 are open due to the same pressure.
- a spring 9 under the piston 12 is compressed.
- a pilot valve 8 opens, and the air from the air inlet is delivered through pilot valve 8 to the orifice 15 and the front volume of the air piston 6.
- the air piston 6 is therefore pushed to the left due to the pressure, and the air passes the orifice 14 and thereafter the orifice 13 and the volume over the bigger diameter piston 12.
- the pressurised air pushes the bigger diameter piston 12 down again, conf. 1c.
- Pistons 10 and 11 continue to pump oil to the oil outlet 4.
- this valve 5 opens and the oil pumped by the piston 10 is returned to the oil tank. From this moment, the outlet valve 3 is closed, and only the smaller diameter piston 11 continues to pump oil through the oil outlet 4 at a higher pressure.
- Fig. 3 illustrates a specific embodiment of the two-step-pump.
