Abstract

[PROBLEMS] To provide excellent electromagnetic stir performance of an electromagnetic brake-cum-electromagnetic stirring coil. [MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS] A method for continuously casting steel by supplying a DC current or a three-phase AC current to an electromagnetic coil disposed around the long sides of a mold and by selectively causing electromagnetic brake or electromagnetic stir to act on the molten steel in the mold. The electromagnetic coil (5) has 2n teeth (5a) along each long side. A winding (5c) is provided around each tooth (5a), and a winding (5d) is provided around each pair of teeth (5a) into one body. The core (5b) of the electromagnetic coil (5) having the teeth (5a) is disposed in the vertical region from a meniscus to the position where the orifice (1a) of an immersion nozzle (1) is placed. When the molten steel (2) in the mold (3) is electromagnetically stirred, the electromagnetic force induced in the molten steel (2) under the meniscus is more than twice of that induced in the position where the orifice (1a) of the immersion nozzle (1) is placed. [Effect] Excellent stirring flow can be formed even under a meniscus.
