Abstract
To achieve a noise elimination exhibiting a high performance of edge preserving by use of a directivity filtering process, while using a small amount of calculation and a small circuit scale to eliminate pattern-like noises causing problems in planar portions. A noise eliminating apparatus is employed wherein an input image is subjected to a filtering process in accordance with the directions of the edge components included in the image, and wherein a coring process is applied which has different characteristics between planar and edge portions of the image. The noise eliminating apparatus comprises an evaluation value calculating part (103) that calculates evaluation values related to a plurality of directions; a direction determining part (105) that determines the directions of the edge components from the evaluation values; a planar degree determining part (107) that distinguishes between the planar and edge portions from the evaluation values; a directivity filtering part (101) that performs the foregoing filtering process based on a result of the direction determining part (105); and a coring part (102) that performs the foregoing coring process based on a result of the planar degree determining part (107).
