Abstract

Even a backlight having a long-life hot-cathode fluorescent lamp exhibits a short start-up time. The hot-cathode fluorescent lamp (10) which the backlight (100) has comprises a bulb (12), a filament, and a pair of lead wires (13) holding the filament (14). The hot-cathode fluorescent lamp (10) is equipped with a blackening preventive means (50). The blackening preventive means (50) is realized by using a filament (14) for producing an interterminal glow (52) between the paired lead wires (13) in pre-heating the filament (14) after (57) emission of thermoelectrons till before (55) the filament temperature reaches a blackening formation region (51).
