Description
REMOTELY ADJUSTABLE WEAR PAD FOR AN EXTENDABLE BOOM
Field of the Invention
[0001] The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for remotely adjusting wear pads, and, more particularly to a method and apparatus for remotely adjusting wear pads for an extendable boom of a backhoe or an excavator.
Background of the Invention
[0002] Backhoes and excavators are well known and utilized in the earth moving industry. Backhoes often include an extendable boom to allow for deeper digging or more remote moving of earth. Extendable booms may have a synthetic wear pad between the stationary and extending member, which is bolted to one or the other to thereby allow a controlled wearing on the replaceable wear pad. As the pads wear the clearance between the wear pad and the other member increases. This creates unwanted sloppiness in the movement of the boom while operating the backhoe. Once the slop in the extendable member becomes too great it is then necessary to dismantle the extendable boom in order to shim the wear pads or replace them. This process of dismantling and adjusting wear pads can take hours. [0003] Some pieces of equipment have adjustable wear pads, the access thereto is normally achieved by the removal of an access panel. An example of adjustable wear pads is contained in U.S. Patent Application Publication No. US2006/0042131 , in which it is illustrated that bolts are loosened and a wedge-shaped wear pad is moved along an inclined surface thereby adjusting the tolerance between the wear pad and the structural member.
[0004] What is needed in the art is an efficient and easy way to adjust the wear pads without requiring disassembly of the boom or need a mechanic to accomplish the adjustment.
Summary of the Invention
[0005] The present invention provides for the remote adjustment of wear pads of an extendable boom of a backhoe or an excavator. [0006] The invention comprises, in one form thereof, a work machine including a
power unit and an extendable boom driven by the power unit. The extendable boom includes an outer member, an inner member, at least one wear pad and at least one adjustable apparatus. The inner member is slidable at least partially within the outer member. The at least one wear pad is in slidable contact with the inner member or the outer member. The at least one adjustable apparatus is in contact with a corresponding wear pad. The adjustable apparatus includes a chamber and a medium injection port in fluid communication with the chamber.

[0008] Fig. 2 is a partially cross-sectional view of a portion of the extendable boom of the work machine of Fig. 1 ;
[0009] Fig. 3 illustrates one embodiment of the wear pad adjustor using in the extendable boom of Figs. 1 and 2;
[0010] Fig. 4 illustrates another embodiment of the wear pad adjustor utilized in the extendable boom of Figs. 1 and 2; and
[0011] Fig. 5 illustrates yet another embodiment of the wear pad adjustor utilized in the extendable boom of Figs. 1 and 2.
Detailed Description of the Invention
[0012] Referring now to the drawings, and more particularly to Fig. 1 , there is shown an earth moving apparatus 10 also known as a work machine 10 or a backhoe unit 10. Work machine 10 includes a power unit 12, a front loader 14 and a backhoe 16. Backhoe 16 includes a first boom 18, a second boom 20 having an extendable portion 22. In operation, machine 10 has a hydraulic control system that allows extendable portion 22 be slid inwardly and outwardly to extend the reach of the bucket of backhoe 16. Although a configuration of a tractor with a backhoe has been illustrated, this is only one example of the use of the present invention. [0013] Now, additionally referring to Figs. 2 and 3, there is illustrated one embodiment of the present invention including second boom 20 showing extendable
portion 22 having an inner structure 24 and an outer structure 26. Inner structure 24 slides relative to outer structure 26 by way of a hydraulic cylinder and hydraulic control system, which is not shown for the purposes of clarity. Wear pad 28 slides along an inner surface of outer structure 26 allowing a clearance between inner structure 24 and outer structure 26, thereby concentrating any wear thereto on wear pad 28. As wear pad 28 wears down and declines in thickness it is adjusted outwardly by adjustor device 30.
[0014] Adjustor device 30 includes a housing 32, fasteners 34, a pressure line 36, a pressure chamber 38, a piston 40, a wedge-shaped device 42 and a grease zerk 44. Fasteners 34 attach housing 32 to inner structure 24, in this example. While wear pad 28 is shown as being associated with inner structure 24 and sliding on an inner surface of outer structure 26, the reverse arrangement is also utilized where the wear pad can be associated with outer structure 26 and then slide along an outer surface of inner structure 24. Pressure line 36, which may be understood to be a conduit or tube allows for the passage of fluid, normally under pressure, which is conveyed to pressure chamber 38. As pressure is applied in pressure chamber 38 it causes piston 40 to move thereby changing the size of pressure chamber 38 and pushing against wedge-shaped device 42. Wedge-shaped device 42 moves along an inner surface of housing 32, the inclined nature of housing 32 corresponds to the shape of wedge-shape device 42, thereby causing wear pad 28 to extend outwardly as wedge-shaped device 42 is moved in housing 32. As illustrated in Fig. 2, wear pad 28 is nearly extended to the maximum since wedge-shaped device 42 is nearly fully driven away from pressure chamber 38. Medium supplied through pressure line 36 to pressure chamber 38 may be in the form of a fluid, grease or oil that is pumped in through zerk 44 at a remote location along boom 20. [0015] When wear pad 28 is replaced, the grease contained within pressure chamber 38 may be released by simply removing the zerk and allowing the grease to escape from the open pressure line or the grease may be directly removed from adjustable device 30.
[0016] Advantageously, the present invention allows for the remote adjusting of the wear pad and even allows the medium to behave as a cushion if the medium is somewhat compressible. The extending of wear pad 28 is accomplished from a
remote location with the use of a grease gun, thereby not requiring the use of tools to adjust the wear pad. A grease gun is often used on a work machine to grease the various joints and allows for a quick easy adjustment of the wear pad utilized in the extendible boom of the present invention. Adjustor device 30, illustrated in Fig. 2, is further illustrated in Fig. 3 showing the detail thereof.
[0017] Now, additionally referring to Fig. 4, there is shown another embodiment of adjustor device 30 of the present invention illustrated as an adjustor device 50 positioned in a housing 32, but additionally including a bladder 52 that serves as a pressure chamber 38. Bladder 52 is shown as directly contacting one side of wear pad 28. As bladder 52 is filled with grease it extends wear pad 28 from housing 32. As in the previous embodiment, adjustor device 50 allows for the remote adjusting of wear pad 28, which can be reset by removing of the grease zerk allowing the grease to be removed therefrom when a new wear pad is installed.
[0018] Now, additionally referring to Fig. 5, there is shown yet another embodiment of an adjustor device 60 of the present invention, which can be utilized for adjustor device 30, illustrated in Fig. 2. Adjustor device 60 includes wear pads 62, 64 and 66 each of which have a seal so that grease applied to pressure chamber 38 directly pushes wear pads 62, 64 and 66. As in the previously illustrated embodiments of the present invention, adjustor device 60 extends wear pads 62, 64 and 66 when grease is pumped into zerk 44 thereby allowing a remote extension of the wear pads. Although, not shown, an additional grease line can be run to lubricate the outer surface of the wear pads by way of a separate grease zerk so that the two zerks allow for the lubrication and adjustment of the wear pads from the same remote location.
[0019] Having described the preferred embodiment, it will become apparent that various modifications can be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the accompanying claims.
