Abstract
A device is provided for maintaining the ducts and evaporator coil in microbial-free condition, the device comprising a reservoir for an antimicrobial preparation, a source of air under pressure for applying to the reservoir to release a predetermined volume of the preparation along the ducts of the air conditioner and past the evaporator coil, and thence into the atmosphere of the premises.
Description
AIRCONDITIONING TREATMENTSYSTEM
TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to air conditioning units and in particular to the treatment of the air in premises being served by the air conditioner.
BACKGROUND ART
It has been estimated that some 2 billion dollars a year are lost due to illnesses derived from airborne diseases - in particular in air-conditioned premises. These diseases are caused by bacteria, fungi or viruses that are often carried on human or around skin follicles by which there can be up to 95% present in air-conditioned premises.
Air conditioned premises, and primarily those in which the air is circulated, are also subject to the ingress of odours.
It is an object of the invention to provide a device which effects a disinfectant action in respect of the air in an air-conditioning premises as well as an optional de- odourising effect.
DISCLOSURE OF THE INVENTION
According to the invention a device for an air-conditioning unit includes a reservoir for a treatment preparation and means to release the preparation at a predetermined rate, the preparation including a suitable anti-microbial agent that is active when dispersed into the air and which may also be deposited on to surfaces of the ducting in the air-conditioner, and/or the evaporator coil.
The preparation may also include a perfume or deodourising agent in an amount sufficient to combat malodours.
In a preferred form of the invention the reservoir is connected to a source of air under pressure for ejection of the preparation through conduits to the air-conditioning ducts. Spray means is included in the ducts adapted to release the preparation into the air in the premises.
The device may include means for micronisation of the preparation so that a fine spray is obtained.
It will be understood that the preparation may be in the form of an aerosol, with means to release the aerosol at a predetermined rate/s.
The rate of release of the preparation will depend on the volume of air to be treated and other factors.
Means for automatic timed release may be provided - for example a timer in electrical connection with an air compressor. A valve, such as a solenoid valve, may be provided.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
An embodiment of the invention is described below with reference to the accompanying sketch.
BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUR THE INVENTION
In the sketch an air-conditioning system is illustrated including a fan cooling blower 10 in connection with conventional ducting 12 with vents 14.
A device is provided to add a treatment solution or suspension or the like to the cold air. The device includes a reservoir 20 for the treatment solution having a connection 22 to the ducting.
An air compressor 24 is provided that is driven by a transformer 26 through a non-return solenoid valve 28.
The air under pressure causes the solution to be expelled from the reservoir into the ducting and may have a piston-and-cylinder arrangement 30. It will be appreciated that other arrangements are possible and all fall within the ambit of the present invention.
The expelled solution is ejected through a spray head 32 so that a micronised treatment agent is forced into the zone being air conditioned through the nozzles 34.
The activation of the compressor may be controlled by a timer 36.
As mentioned above the treatment solution may contain microbiocidal substances as well as deodorants. A suitable disinfecting agent is the product sold under the trade mark ACOT 500, which has shown excellent results in SABS tests.
