Abstract

In an optical module mounting a variable wavelength laser (TDA-DFB-LD) comprising an optical waveguide having wavelength control waveguide portions capable of controlling the oscillation wavelength and gain waveguide portions generating a gain alternately in the direction of optical axis, and a drive section capable of controlling a first drive current being fed to the wavelength control waveguide portion side and a second drive current being fed to the gain waveguide portion side independently, line width of light exiting the variable wavelength laser is widened by superimposing a dither signal oscillating at a preset frequency with a preset amplitude on the second drive current out of the first and second drive currents, and generation of backscattering light due to SBS is suppressed by increasing the SBS threshold of an optical fiber into which the light enters.
