Abstract
A fuel cartridge (1) has a pair of flat surfaces (1A) in which holes (3) are formed. A net is stretched in each hole (3), and solid methanol is placed inside the hole (3). A fuel cell unit (2) has a flat box-like shape and is constructed from a pair of flat wall sections (2A), a pair of long wall sections (2B), and a pair of short wall sections (2C). Each flat wall section (2A) is provided with two MEAs (4), or fuel cells, this is, the pair of flat wall section (2A) has four MEAs (4), which are arranged so that fuel electrodes (not shown) faces inward. On one side of the pair of long wall sections (2B) is an opening (5) having at its peripheral edge an elastic packing (5A) as a sealing member. An openable lid (6) is pivotally fixed to the opening (5) by a shaft (6A) as a pivot member. The fuel cell system has sufficient air-tightness, has excellent power generation efficiency per unit volume, and has a simple structure and a small size.
