Abstract

Disclosed is a novel gravure engraving roll which has a surface-reinforced coating layer which is non-toxic and is free of the concern about pollution and which has excellent plate wear resistance. Also disclosed is a method for producing the gravure engraving roll. Specifically, the gravure engraving roll comprises: a base material; a copper-plated layer which is formed on the surface of the base material and has multiple gravure cells formed on it surface; a metal-plated under layer formed on the surface of the cupper-plated layer having the gravure cells formed thereon; a metal layer formed on the surface of the metal-plated under layer; a metal carbide layer which comprises a carbide of a metal contained in the metal layer and is formed on the surface of the metal layer; and a diamond-like carbon coating layer which covers the surface of the metal carbide layer, wherein the metal-plated under layer is a nickel-plated layer, a cobalt-plated layer or an iron-plated layer, and wherein the diamond-like carbon coating film is formed by PVD method.
