Abstract

Provided are an electric brake device and a method of controlling the electric brake device. The electric brake device has a brushless motor for driving a pump for raising the pressure in a wheel cylinder that is installed on a wheel and generating braking force, an inverter circuit adapted for drive of the brushless motor, a control unit for sending a drive signal to the inverter circuit, and a braking-request calculation section for calculating a braking request based on conditions of a vehicle. The control unit has a first waveform drive section for applying a voltage of a first waveform (rectangular wave) to each phase of the brushlessmotor, a second waveform drive section for applying a voltage of a second waveform (sine wave), and an application voltage selection section for selecting an application voltage based on the calculated braking request. When the calculated braking request is greater than a pressure rise gradient that requires a predetermined pump discharge flow rate, the application voltage selection section applies the first waveform voltage to each phase of the brushless motor, and when smaller than the predetermined pressure rise gradient, the application voltage selection section applies second waveform voltage.
