Abstract

An information recording medium (100) has a first region (102) where pits (102a) having concavo-convex shapes for carrying data information are formed, and a second region (101) where the characteristic information (101b) on the concavo-convex shapes for performing gap control for the pits is recorded by a pattern (101a) flatter than that of the concavo-convex shapes. When the characteristic information is read out at first from the second region at the time of reproduction, collision against the information recording medium can be avoided surely even in the case of an optical pickup utilizing a solid immersion lens when the data information is read out at the first region.
