Abstract
Disclosed is a method for producing an electrode catalyst for a fuel cell, which comprises the following steps: a first support step for producing metal microparticles having an average particle size of 0.1 to 1.5 nm (inclusive) on an electrically conductive carbon carrier at regulated particle distance; a second support step for allowing other metal to grow around the metal microparticles (cores); and a step for treating the microparticles in an atmosphere containing hydrogen after the second support step. The method enables to produce an electrode catalyst for a fuel cell, which is improved in the methanol oxidation activity per active surface area. In the method, the treatment in an atmosphere containing hydrogen after the second support step may be carried out at a low temperature less than 100°C, whereby the methanol oxidation activity per mass can be improved.
