Abstract

The invention provides an electrochemical process, said process including contacting a process stream with one or more electrode pairs, passing a cyclic current to one or more of the electrode pairs thereby to cyclically energize said electrode pairs, controlling the current flow to the one or more electrode pairs in response to the electrode and/or process stream characteristics and/or changes therein so that an integrated energy sum of both the positive and negative current waveform per cycle is zero to within 20%. The invention extends to a reactor for the process, a controller, a method of maintaining electrode activity in the process, and a method of treating an effluent stream.
