Definitions
- the invention relates to filtration systems and particularly to a filtration system relying on gravity for feed pressure and which system supplies potable water in relatively small quantities for use by a single person or small group of people.
- Typical filtration systems for drinking water include a number of filters in series with each filter designed to remove particular unwanted and undesirable contaminant or pollutant materials from the water.
- the number and type of filters incorporated in a filtration system depend on the particular problem associated with a particular geographical region. The filters are selected so that the eventual output water is of a potable quality which reaches desired health standards.
- filtration systems typically include a separate cartridge filter and a media tank filter.
- Cartridge filters have a ceramic cartridge, a polypropylene filter or a pleated paper or cardboard filter selected to suit a user's requirements. Only ceramic cartridge filters are rated to provide an absolute level of filtration. This is understood to be because the other filters have inherent limitations and depending on the input pressure of water to the filter do allow particles slightly larger than the filters nominal rating to pass through the filter.
- An object of the invention is therefore to provide a filtration system which is gravity feed, is relatively inexpensive to operate and maintain and which offers a useful alternative choice.
- a gravity feed filtration system including a bag reservoir adapted in use to be hung from any suitable means, the bag reservoir including a washable preliminary bag filter for removing sediment and protozoam cysts, an outlet from the bag reservoir and preliminary bag filter being connected to a filter cartridge incorporating in layers a carbon filtration media, an iodinated resin, an iodide scavenging resin and a carbon polishing filtration medium, the series of layers being such that the carbon pre-filter removes, pesticides, herbicides and organic matter, the iodinated resin introduces iodine to kill bacteria and viruses, the iodide scavenging resin removes the iodine species and the carbon polishing filter medium polishes the water to improve taste, the series of layers are selected to provide gravity fed water at a rate of about 12 to 15 litres an hour.
- the bag reservoir can have a capacity of about 9 litres and the washable preliminary bag filter can be a 0.5 to 1.00 micron polypropylene bag filter.
- the preliminary bag filter is selected to remove at least sediment and cysts.
- the iodinated resin can be the resin sold under the trade mark MCV® which introduces iodine disinfectant to kill bacteria and viruses.
- the iodine scavenging resin can be the product lodosorb® which is described in US patent specification no. 2005/0234200.
- the resin removes ali species of post disinfection iodine.
- the carbon polishing filter medium can be any suitable carbon filtration medium.
- the cartridge filter can be a cylindrical member with a capacity of about 720 cubic centimetres (cc) into which the' following layers of filter media are included: about 100cc of carbon: 150cc of lodosorb; 150cc of MCV and 100cc of carbon.
- the outlet from the cartridge filter can include a valve or tap for turning flow through the filtration system off and on.
- Figure 1 shows a front view of an example of filtration system according to the invention.
- Figure 2 shows the example shown in Figure 1 with a preliminary bag filter thereof removed from within the bag reservoir.
- the filtration system has a bag reservoir 1 adapted in use to be hung from any suitable means such as a purpose built stand, hook or branch (not shown).
- the bag reservoir 1 includes a washable preliminary bag filter 2.
- the bag reservoir 1 can, for example, have a capacity of about 9 litres and the washable preliminary bag filter 2 can be a 0.5 to 1.00 micron polypropylene bag filter.
- the bag filter 2 in Figure 2 is shown pulled out from within the bag reservoir for cleaning or maintenance.
- An outlet 3 from the bag reservoir and preliminary bag filter 1 is connected to a filter cartridge 4.
- the filter cartridge 4 can have a capacity of 500cc or 720CC.
- the filter cartridge 4 has placed therein, in layers, a carbon filtration media, an iodinated resin, an iodide scavenging resin and a carbon polishing filtration medium.
- the iodinated resin can be the resin sold under the trade mark MCV® which introduces iodine disinfectant to kill bacteria and viruses.
- the iodine scavenging resin can be the product lodosorb® which is described in US patent specification no. 2005/0234200.
- the resin removes all species of post disinfection iodine.
- the carbon polishing filter can be any suitable carbon filtration medium.
- the cartridge filter 4 can be a cylindrical member with a capacity of about 500 cubic centimetres (cc) and preferably 720cc into which the following layers of filter media are included: . about 100cc of carbon: 150cc of lodosorb; 150cc of MCV and 10Occ of carbon.
- the series of layers are such that the bag filter removes sediment and protozoam cysts, the carbon pre-filter removes, pesticides, herbicides and organic matter, the iodinated resin introduces iodine to kill bacteria and viruses, the iodide scavenging resin removes the iodine species and the carbon polishing filter polishes the water to improve taste.
- the series of layers are selected to provide gravity fed water at a rate of about 12 to 15 litres an hour.
- the selected parameters for the filtration layers are such that after a throughput of about 3000 litres the cartridge will need to be replaced or the filter mediums recharged.
- the outlet 5 from the cartridge filter can include a valve or tap 6 for turning off and on the flow through the filtration system.
