Abstract

Door handle (1) of the type which temporary is placed in a door leaf for operation of the door prior to installing a permanent door handle. The door handle (1) consists of two parts (2, 2) which are provided on each side of the locking case of the door, respectively, where each part (2) comprises an outer operating device (4) and at least one part comprises an inner rod device (10). The parts (2, 2) are complementary, the inner rod device (10) is in its outer/distal area provided with barbs (12) on at least one side, a locking device 6 is provided on the complementary operating device (4), in that this engages and locks the rod device (10) in pushed-in operational position.

Description

DOOR HANDLE
The present invention concerns a door handle of the type which is temporary located in a door leaf for operating the door prior to installing a permanent door handle, as the door handle consist of two parts which are provided on each side of the locking case, respectively, where each part comprises an outer operating device and at least one part comprises an inner rod device.
Today doors are normally delivered with a locking case, but without door handle. Doors are mounted and they are often left without door handle during shorter or longer periods during the construction period. Door handles are normally mounted to the doors at the end of the construction period in order to avoid that the handles are damaged or in order to avoid that the handles may damage other materials, since the door handles may be the object for theft and since the decision regarding such interior details often is not made before the end of the period.
Further, door handles are in the way during storage and transport of doors, and this is also a contributing factor for delivering doors without door handles.
In order to open and shut doors without door handles, occasional objects as for example screwdriver, chisel, nails, keys etc. must then be utilized. This is obvious irritating for craftsmen and others which work in the building, and creates unnecessary delay. Use of incorrect tool could also damage the door leaf and also the locking case.
A danger for doors without handles is also that persons may be locked in if they do not have a suitable equipment to open the door, and this can be both inconvenient and directly dangerous if fire or other accidents should arise.
Within the field of the door handles, a number of different solutions exist.
From GB 2 357 797 A a temporary door handle for windows and doors is described. The handle is formed such that it does not extend outside a window- or doorframe such that the window or the door can be delivered with the handle not being in the way during stacking of such doors or windows.
From EP 1 398 435 A1 a permanent door handle for a locking case is described, where the door handle is partly integrated in the door. The door handle may for example be operated with a screwdriver, or in that a fixed handle can be turned. The door handle comprises a fixed flange part which is fixed in the door and which extends somewhat outside this, in addition to a turnable part for engagement with the lock in the locking case.
From US 6 485 069 a temporary door lock is described for use in doors typically of American style prior to mounting a permanent locking case or locking mechanism in the door.
From US 6 874 827 and US 2004/0201228 a temporary locking mechanism is also described for mounting in a door where a locking case or other locking mechanism is installed. From DE 1 970 0395 it is described a special through going door handle with a fixed flange part with a flange on each side of a door, and an integrated handle for the door. The publication shows a permanent solution for a special locking case.
An object with the present invention is that the door handle shall be inexpensive in order to produce and distribute.
Another object is that the door handle shall be simple to mount and dismount.
The object of the present invention is achieved by a door handle of the type as stated in the preamble of the description and which is characterized in that the parts are complimentary, the inner rod device is in its outer/distal area provided with barbs on at least one side, a locking device is provided on the complimentary operating device, in that this engages and locks the rod part in-pushed in operational position.
Preferred embodiments of the door handles is further described in the claims 2 including 6.
A locking case as described in this description normally comprises a locking mechanism with a dead-bolt or pal which is pulled in by a door handle, and which is pre-stressed against an extended position. The dead-bolt will often include a fase in parallel with the door leaf and a fase angular in relation to the door leaf, such that the door can be latched without being opened before the locking mechanism pulls the dead-bolt in. The locking mechanism will typically also comprise a lock for a key, either for locking the above mentioned dead-bolt, or for operating a second dead-bolt. The locking mechanism will include a rotatable body having a through going hole which engages the door handle and which is connected to the dead-bolt. The locking case is located in a recess in the door leaf.
The door handle according to the invention does not comprise an extra flange or another element which are fixed in the door leaf, but only a handle which is rotatable mounted in the locking case of the door.
The door handle may comprise a body for engagement with the mechanism in the locking case which is inserted in the door leaf. Access to the mechanism in the locking case is to through the milling or the bore in the door leaf in a normal way.
The body for engagement with the mechanism in the locking case is typically a square rod body with standard dimensions for locking cases. The rod body can be adapted to the different countries standards. The rod body is further provided to an operating device provided on each side of the door, such that the door easily may be operated from both sides.
In markets outside Scandinavia the access to the locking mechanism in a locking case is very limited since the milling hole in the door in many cases only has a diameter of 20-30 mm. For such doors an integrated door handle, which can be folded out during use, will not be suitable. The door handle according to the present invention is particularly adapted to this type of doors, as this normally will be mounted after the door is installed.
The door handle will be particularly suited for doors where the locking case is located far inside. Further, it also will be particularly suited for doors having a locking case with "heavy spring". The invention will be further explained with reference to the attached figures, where
Figure 1 shows in section a first embodiment of the door handle comprising to parts mounted together,
Figure 2 shows a detailed drawing of the one part of the door handle in figure 1 , Figure 3 shows a detail drawing of the second part of the door handle of figure 1 , and
Figures 4 and 5 show detail drawings, from both sides, respectively of a second embodiment of the door handle according to the invention. With reference to figures 1 , 2 and 3 a first embodiment of a door handle 1 is shown. Figure 1 shows a section of the complete door handle 1 where the complementary parts 2, 2 are shown in a pushed-in operating position. In the shown preferred embodiment of the door handle 1 the two complementary parts 2, 2 are identical. Figure 2 and 3 thus show two identical parts 2, 2 seen from the first and the second side, respectively. The door handle's parts 2, 2 consist of an inner rod device 10, which in its outer distal area is provided with barbs 12 on one side. The opposite side of the inner rod device, which forms contact surface 13 with a complementary part 2, is plane. The inner rod device 10 is in its inner, proximal area connected to an outer operating device 4 over a transitional area 15. The transitional area15 is formed for receiving and maintaining the complimentary inner rod device 10, as a barb device 9 is provided in order to fix the complementary barbs 12 of the rod device 10. The locking device 6 of the operating device comprises the barb device 9 and a releasing device 7 which is provided on the operating device 4 by a rupturable/tearable connection 8 in the area between the barb device 9 and the releasing device 7. Activating the releasing device 7 causes that the rupturable/tearable connection 8 bursts and the barb device 9 disengages the rod device 1 , where after the parts 2, 2 can be pulled from each other and released form the door. The door handles two parts 2, 2 are in this embodiment identical which results in that the rod device 10,10 in- pushed in position together form a square rod body with standard dimensions for locking cases.
In another alternative embodiment the ruptrable/tearable connection 8 may be replaced by a articulation 8a. When activating the releasing device 7 the barb device 9 will be released from the rod device 10. This embodiment results in that the door handle 1 can be utilized several times, i.e. not only for a disposable use which will be the case with a rupturable/tearable connection 8.
Since the door handles two parts 2, 2 are identical this will in a high degree make the use of the door handle more simple, since the user/operator does not need to select "pair" and thus always have the right part in hand. This feature that two parts of the door handle are identical, will also simplify and lower the cost during production and logistics and obviously as discussed above during mounting at the construction site. The two parts 2, 2 of the door handle are pushed in from each side of the locking case of the door and are automatically locked to each other in pushed-in position as described above. When removing the temporary door handle 1 , the releasing device 7 is activated whereby the connection 8 bursts or tears and the barbs 9 of the releasing part disengage from the barbs 12 of the inner rod device. The parts 2, 2 may then be pulled from each other and released from the door. Installation of permanent door handle may then be carried out.
Figure 4 shows a second embodiment of the one part 2 of the door handle. Figure 5 shows the same part 2, but now seen from the opposite side. The part 2 of the door handle according to figures 4 and 5 differs from the door handle according to figures 1 , 2 and 3 only with regards to the shape of the outer operating device 4. In this embodiment the operating device 4 is angular in relation to the annular operating device 4 in the first embodiment. The inner rod device 10 including transitional area 15 will be the same as in the preferred embodiment. It is only the operating device 4 itself including the releasing device 7 which will have another form, but operation and function of the door handle will be the same. Reference is made in this connection to figure 1 The door handle is preferably made of plastic, metal or another suitable material.

Claims

PATENT CLAIMS
1. Door handle (1 ) of the type which temporary are placed in a door leaf for operation of the door until installation of a permanent door handle, as the door handle (1) comprising two parts (2,2) which are provided on each side of the locking case of the door, respectively, where each part (2) comprises an outer operating device (4) and at least one part comprises an inner rod device (10), characterized in that at least the one inner rod device (10) in its outer/distal area is provided with barbs (12) on at least one side, a locking device (6) is provided on the operating device (4), in that this engages and locks the rod device (10) in pushed-in operational position.
2. Door handle (1 ) according to claim 1 , characterized in that each part (2,2) comprises an inner rod device (10) where at least one rod device in its outer/distal area is provided with barbs (12) on the side which faces away from the plane contact face/push-in face (13) between the rod parts (2,2).
3. Door handle (1) according to claim 2, characterized in that the parts are identical.
4. Door handle (1) according to anyone of the previous claims, characterized in that the locking device (6) comprises a barb device (9) and a releasing device (7) which are provided on the operating device (4) by a ruptureable/tearable connection (8) in the area between the barb device (9) and the releasing device (7), whereby activation of the releasing device results in that the connection (8) burst and the barb device (9) disengages the rod device (10) whereafter the parts (2,2) can be pulled from each other and released form the door.

Door handle (1) according to anyone of the previous claims, characterized in that the locking device (6) comprises a barb device (9) and a releasing device (7) which are provided on the operating device (4) by a articulation (8a) in the area between the barb device (9) and the releasing device (7), whereby activation of the releasing device results in that the barb device (9) disengages the rod device (10) whereafter the parts (2, 2) can be pulled from each other and released from the door.
6. Door handle (1) according to anyone of the previous claims, characterized in that the operating device (4) is annular and the releasing device (7) is provided internally of the annular operating device (4).
7. Door handle (1) according to anyone of the claims 1-5, characterized in that the operating device (4) is angular and the releasing device (7) is provided internally of the angular operating device (4).
