Description
SECURITY COMPOSITION
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to a composition for identifying objects, in particular bank notes.
Dyes have been used to stain bank notes which have been stolen. Some containers for transporting bank notes include a canister containing a dye. When the container is stolen, the canister receives a signal to discharge the dye onto the stolen bank notes. A problem with dyes which have been used in the past is that thieves have been able to clean and remove the dye by using solvents and/or chemicals.
It is an object this invention to provide a composition for application to an object such as a bank note which cannot be removed from the object, and also to provide a composition for the identification of the object.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
A first aspect of the invention relates to a composition for staining an object such as a bank note (including plastic-based and paper-based bank notes), the composition including a solvent, a thermoplastic resin and a pigment or dye.
The solvent may include a dibasic ester and/or a dipolar aprotic solvent such as n-methyl pyrrolidone, and/or a glycol ether ester such as butyl glycol acetate.
The dibasic ester may be selected from the group consisting of dimethyl adipate, dimethyl glutarate and dimethyl succinate, preferably dimethyl glutarate.
The thermoplastic resin may be an acrylic monomer.
The pigment or dye may be selected from metal complex dyes and acid dyes.
Preferably, the composition includes a pigment which is identifiable under infrared light at an identifiable wave length, for example Lumogen™.
The Lumogen™ typically comprises 0.1 - 2%, preferably 0.1 - 0.5% by weight of the composition.
A second aspect of the invention relates to printing ink which contains a pigment which is identifiable under infrared light at an identifiable wave length, for example Lumogen™.
The Lumogen™ typically comprises 0.01 - 2%, preferably 0.1 - 0.5% by weight of the printing ink.
Preferred examples of Lumogen™ which are suitable for use in the present invention are Lumogen™ IR765 and Lumogen™ IR788.
The invention also relates to an object such as a bank note or other printed object or media having printing ink as described above thereon.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
A first aspect pf this invention relates to a composition for identifying an object such as a bank note. The composition includes:
1. 15 - 35%, typically 30-35% by weight dibasic ester (a solvent);
2. 15 - 40%, typically 30-40% by weight dipolar aprotic solvent, namely n- methyl pyrrolidone (a solvent);
3. 15 - 35%, typically 30-35% by weight glycol ether ester, namely butyl glycol acetate (a solvent);
4. 1 - 5%, typically 1-3% by weight acrylic monomer (a thermoplastic resin) such as a copolymer of methyl methacrylate butyl methacrylate;
5. 2 - 15% by weight pigment or dye such as metal complex dyes and acid dyes; and in a preferred embodiment
6. 0.1 - 2%, typically 0.1 - 0.2% Lumogen™ available from BASF Aktiengesellschaft.
The combination of solvents and resins used in the composition of the invention are non-flammable and are suitable for use in canisters for use in the containers described in the Background of the Invention. Furthermore, the solvents and resins are free of tetrahydrofuranone and methylene chloride which have been used in the past but which have been found to be hazardous to human health.
An advantage of the composition of the invention is that once applied to paper bank notes, it is not possible to remove the composition from such bank notes using solvents, acids or chemicals. In addition to this, the composition is suitable for use on plastic/polyester bank notes which are not porous. An attempt to remove the composition from such bank notes, will deface the bank notes.
The Lumogen™, which may be an aldazine pigment, is included in the composition of the invention at very low quantities, but there is enough Lumogen™ present to be picked up and identified by an infrared/lazer reader or scanner. The Lumogen™ reflects infrared light at a particular identifiable wavelength, and this can be used to identify an object to which the composition has been applied. Preferred examples of Lumogen™ which are suitable for use in the present invention are Lumogen IR765 and Lumogen IR788.
A second aspect of the invention relates to a printing ink containing a pigment which is identifiable under infrared light at an identifiable wave length, for example Lumogen™. The Lumogen™ typically comprises 0.01 - 2%, preferably 0.1 - 0.5% by weight of the printing ink. Preferred examples of Lumogen™ which are suitable for use in the present invention are Lumogen™ IR765 and Lumogen™ IR788. The invention also relates to an object such as a bank note or other printed objected or media having the printing ink as described above thereon.
The invention will now be described in more detail with reference to the following non-limiting examples:
Example 1 - Composition suitable for staining paper and plastic bank notes.
Example 2 - Composition suitable for staining paper and plastic bank notes and includes Lumogen™ for identification with an infrared scanner.
