Definitions

  • the present invention relates to apparatuses for cooking. More particularly, some examples of the invention concern a housing for a cooking apparatus having a bezel and an insert member.
  • Tailgate parties and picnics at sporting events, concerts, and other types of gathering have become very popular. People at these types of gatherings typically are fans of a particular sports team, school, musical group, or other organization. Fans often enjoy showing their allegiance by wearing shirts or hats that identify a particular team, school, or musical group. Fans may also show their allegiance by attaching stickers to their vehicle or by waving flags that identify a particular team, school, or musical group.
  • Cooking apparatuses for example barbeques, are often used in social settings such as tailgate parties, picnics, campouts, backyard parties, and other social events.
  • cooking apparatuses, and housings for cooking apparatuses generally have the shortcoming of not providing any way for fans to display their allegiance to a particular team, school, or musical group.
  • condiments are typically used to season the food.
  • space for holding condiments and utensils and other items is often in short supply.
  • condiments often must be placed on a separate table, or in a vehicle, because cooking apparatuses and housings for cooking apparatuses typically provide little or no space for holding condiments.
  • Cooking apparatuses used in settings such as tailgate parties typically have controls for controlling the cooking temperature. These controls are often exposed on the body of the apparatus, and consequently, are vulnerable to being damaged.
  • the barbeque may be transported in the vehicle, or attached to the exterior of the vehicle, or on a trailer.
  • barbeques transported outside the vehicle typically cannot be moved to a convenient location for cooking such as on a picnic bench, due to the size of the cooking apparatus, or because the cooking apparatus cannot be separated from the vehicle, or because the cooking apparatus is not free standing apart from the vehicle.
  • the housing for the cooking apparatus includes a hood, a bezel, and an insert member.
  • the bezel is configured to have an insert member receiving area, and is attached to the hood.
  • the insert member is attached to the housing for the cooking apparatus adjacent the insert member receiving area.

BACKGROUND
1 . Technical Field
[0002] The present invention relates to apparatuses for cooking. More particularly, some examples of the invention concern a housing for a cooking apparatus having a bezel and an insert member.
2. Description of Related Art
[0003] Tailgate parties and picnics at sporting events, concerts, and other types of gathering have become very popular.
[0004] Cooking apparatuses, for example barbeques, are often used in social settings such as tailgate parties, picnics, campouts, backyard parties, and other social events. However, cooking apparatuses, and housings for cooking apparatuses, generally have the shortcoming of not providing any way for fans to display their allegiance to a particular team, school, or musical group. [0005] When cooking food in settings such as tailgate parties, picnics, campouts, and backyard parties, condiments are typically used to season the food. However, in these settings, space for holding condiments and utensils and other items is often in short supply. For example, at a tailgate party, condiments often must be placed on a separate table, or in a vehicle, because cooking apparatuses and housings for cooking apparatuses typically provide little or no space for holding condiments.
[0006] Cooking apparatuses used in settings such as tailgate parties typically have controls for controlling the cooking temperature. These controls are often exposed on the body of the apparatus, and consequently, are vulnerable to being damaged.
[0007] To transport a cooking apparatus such as a barbeque to a tailgate party, picnic, or other event, the barbeque may be transported in the vehicle, or attached to the exterior of the vehicle, or on a trailer. Although transporting the barbeque outside the vehicle is desirable, barbeques transported outside the vehicle typically cannot be moved to a convenient location for cooking such as on a picnic bench, due to the size of the cooking apparatus, or because the cooking apparatus cannot be separated from the vehicle, or because the cooking apparatus is not free standing apart from the vehicle.
[0008] In summary, known cooking apparatuses, and known housings for cooking apparatuses, have a number of inadequacies.
SUMMARY
[0009] One aspect of the invention is a housing for a cooking apparatus. As an example, the housing for the cooking apparatus includes a hood, a bezel, and an insert member. The bezel is configured to have an insert member receiving area, and is attached to the hood. The insert member is attached to the housing for the cooking apparatus adjacent the insert member receiving area.
[0010] Another aspect of the invention is a cooking apparatus. As an example the cooking apparatus includes a pan, a cooking surface coupled to the pan, a hood rotatably attached to the pan, and a bezel attached to the hood, wherein the bezel is configured to have an insert member receiving area. Examples of the cooking apparatus may also include an insert member attached to the cooking apparatus adjacent the insert member receiving area. [0011] Another aspect of the invention is a method of using a housing for a cooking apparatus. An example of the method includes the following operations: swinging a hood to an open position, swinging a top surface of a first side shelf to a position outside of a pan, and rotating a surface of a utility tray from a first orientation to a substantially horizontal orientation. [0012] Another aspect of the invention is a method of using a cooking apparatus. An example of the method includes the following operations: selecting an insert member from a plurality of insert members, and attaching the selected insert member to a bezel of the cooking apparatus, wherein the selected insert member is attached to the bezel adjacent an insert member receiving area of the bezel .
[0013] One or more advantages may be provided by some examples of the invention. For example, some examples of the invention advantageously provide an insert member attached to a housing for a cooking apparatus, wherein the insert member may include an identifier that may include, for example, an emblem or logo for a sports team, school, or musical group. Some examples of the invention include a utility tray that covers and protects one or more controls of a cooking apparatus when a surface of the utility tray is in a first position for storage, and that provides a tray for condiments and utensils and other items when the surface of the utility tray is in a second position for use. [0057] The support arm 384 may be configured for coupling to a trailer hitch 102 of a vehicle 104. In some examples the support arm 384 is configured to have a bend section 1048 that has a bend of approximately 90 degrees. The support arm 384 may have an end section 1050, and a hitch insertion member 1052 may be attached to the end section 1050 of the support arm 384. [0058] In some examples the end section 1050 of the support arm
384 has a longitudinal axis 1054, and a cross section of the support arm end section 1050 perpendicular to the longitudinal axis 1054 of the end section 1050 of the support arm 384 is substantially a circle. Also, in some examples the hitch insertion member 1052 has a longitudinal axis 1056 and an exterior surface 1058, and a cross section of the exterior surface 1058 of the hitch insertion member 1052 perpendicular to the longitudinal axis 1056 of the hitch insertion member 1052 is substantially rectangular. In some examples, at least a portion of the end section 1050 of the support arm 384 may be inserted into the hitch insertion member 1052. In some examples, the hitch insertion member 1052 could be solid, and in that case the end section 1050 of the support arm 384 need not be inserted into the hitch insertion member 1052.
[0059] The hitch insertion member 1052 may be formed with a first hole 1060 in a first side 1062 of the hitch insertion member 1052 and a second hole 1064 in a second side 1066 of the hitch insertion member 1052, wherein the first and second holes 1060, 1064 in the hitch insertion member have centers that are aligned. In some examples, the hitch insertion member could be solid, and a single hole could be provided through the hitch insertion
- 20 - member instead of the first hole 1060 and the second hole 1064. In some examples the second hole 1064 (or the first hole 1060) of the hitch insertion member 1052 is threaded. The housing for a cooking apparatus 100 may also include a hitch bolt 1068 inserted into the first and second holes 1060, 1064 of the hitch insertion member 1052 and secured to the threaded second hole 1064 of the hitch insertion member 1052, to reduce movement of the support arm 384 when the hitch insertion member 1052 is inserted into a trailer hitch. In some examples the housing for a cooking apparatus 100 may include a hitch nut 1070. The hitch bolt 1068 may be inserted into the first and second holes 1060, 1064 of the hitch insertion member 1052 and secured to the hitch nut 1070, to reduce movement of the support arm 384 when the hitch insertion member 1052 is inserted into a trailer hitch. The hitch nut 1070 could be included both in examples wherein the second hole 1064 of the hitch insertion member 1052 is threaded, and wherein the second hole 1064 of the hitch insertion member 1052 is not threaded. The hitch insertion member
1052 may have an inside, and in some examples, the hitch nut 1070 may be welded to the inside of the hitch insertion member 1052. The hitch bolt 1068 may have a threaded end 1072 for mating with the hitch nut 1070 or with the threaded second hole 1064 of the hitch insertion member. In some examples a clip (discussed below with reference to FIG. 11 ) could be provided instead of the hitch nut 1070, for attachment to the hitch bolt 1068, and in these examples, the hitch bolt 1068 need not have a threaded end 1072, but instead could be formed with a slot for mating with the hitch clip.
[0060] As an example, the hitch insertion member 1052 (shown in FIG. 10) may be sized and shaped to fit into a standard vehicle tubular trailer hitch 102 (shown in FIGS. 1 and 2). However, the hitch insertion member could be sized and shaped to fit other types and sizes of trailer hitches. The opening of the hollow tubular end of a standard vehicle trailer hitch typically is two inches by two inches. This type of trailer hitch is commonly provided in the standard tow package on most pickups, sport utility vehicles, and recreational vehicles. To secure the housing for a cooking apparatus 100 to this type of trailer hitch, the hitch insertion member 1052 is inserted into the rearward facing hollow tubular end 108 of the trailer hitch 102, and the holes
- 21 - 1060, 1064 in the first and second sides 1062, 1066 of the hitch insertion member 1052 are aligned with the hole 110 in the first side and the hole 112 in the second side of the trailer hitch hollow tube 106, and the hitch bolt 1068 is inserted through the holes 1060, 1064 in the first and second sides 1062, 1066 of the hitch insertion member 1052 and through the hole in the first side 110 and the hole in the second side 112 of the trailer hitch hollow tube 106, to attach the hitch insertion member 1052 to the trailer hitch 102.
[0061] In alternative examples, the support arm 384 could have an extended end section that is configured similar to the hitch insertion member 1052, for insertion into the trailer hitch 102. The extended support arm end section could be formed with two hitch holes for alignment with corresponding holes in the trailer hitch, similar to the hitch insertion member 1052. In these alternative examples, the hitch bolt 1068 may be inserted through the two hitch holes in the support arm and secured to the hitch nut 1070 (or to a hitch clip) to reduce movement of the support arm 384 when the support arm 384 is inserted into the trailer hitch 102.
[0062] Referring to FIG. 11 , in some examples wherein the extended end section 1102 of the support arm 384 is inserted into the hitch insertion member 1052, the end section 1102 of the support arm 384 is formed with a first hole 1104 and a second hole 1106, and the hitch insertion member is formed with a first hole 1060 and a second hole 1064, wherein the first hole 1104 of the end section 1102 of the support arm 384 and the first hole 1060 of the hitch insertion member 1052 and the second hole 1106 of the end section 1102 of the support arm 384 and the second hole 1064 of the hitch insertion member have centers that are substantially collinear. The hitch bolt 1068 may be inserted into the first and second holes of the hitch insertion member 1060, 1064 and the first and second holes 1104, 1106 of the end section 1102 of the support arm 384, and secured to the hitch clip 1108, to reduce movement of the support arm 384 when the support arm is inserted into a trailer hitch. In other examples, a hitch nut 1070 (shown in FIG. 10) could be used instead of the hitch clip 1108, and in these examples, the threaded end 1072 of the hitch bolt 1068 could mate with the hitch nut 1070. In some examples, the second hole 1064 of the hitch insertion member 1052, and/or
- 22 - the second hole 1106 in the extended end section 1102 of the support arm 384 are threaded, and the threaded end 1072 of the hitch bolt 1068 is secured to the threaded holes 1064 and/or 1106, instead of, or in addition to, the hitch clip 1108, to reduce movement of the support arm 384 when the support arm 384 is inserted into a trailer hitch.
[0063] The hitch bolt 1068, in conjunction with the hitch clip 1108, or in conjunction with a hitch nut 1070, and/or in conjunction with a threaded hole in the hitch insertion member 1052 and/or the extended end section 1102 of the support arm 384, may be called a hitch stabilizer. If the hitch bolt 1068 has a threaded end 1072, the hitch bolt 1068 can be tightened to push the hitch insertion member 1052 (and/or the extended end section 1102 of the support arm 384) to a side of the trailer hitch to prevent rattling.
[0064] Referring to FIG. 12, another view of the housing for a cooking apparatus 100 is shown, in which a fuel tank 1202 is supported by the fuel tank retaining member 342. Still referring to FIG. 12, the housing for a cooking apparatus 100 could also include a ground support post 1204, which may be attached to the swing arm 382. The ground support post may be one piece, or as shown, may have a telescoping end portion 1206 inserted into a base portion 1208, for adjusting the length of the ground support post 1204. A base 1210 may be attached to an end of the ground support post 1204, and for example, may be attached to an end of the telescoping end portion1206. In some examples, holes 1212 may be provided in the ground support post 1204 for inserting one or more bolts or pins for locking the length of the ground support post 1204. When extended to come in contact with the ground, the ground support post 1204 helps support the weight of the housing for a cooking apparatus 100. In some examples, a ground support post hinge may be attached to the swing arm 382, and the ground support post 1204 may be attached to the ground support post hinge, to permit swinging the ground support post 1204 from a first position near the swing arm 382, to a second position wherein an end (which may be the base 1210) of the ground support post 1204 is in contact with the ground. In some examples the hinge may be a pin or bolt 1214 that is inserted through a hole in the ground support post 1204, and that is attached to the swing arm 382, to rotatably attach the
- 23 - ground support post 1204 to the swing arm 382. A ground support post retaining clip or spring (not shown) could be attached to the swing arm 382, for securing the ground support post 1204 in a retracted position adjacent the swing arm 382.
