Abstract

The present invention relates to an applicator device for liquid, cream or gel together with a method for using the applicator device. The applicator device contains an applicator pad which is supplied with the cream, liquid or gel which has to be applied and the applicator pad is enclosed in a sealed compartment which can be opened in order to put the applicator pad to use. The liquid, gel or cream contained in the applicator pad will thereby be unable to leak out or soil the holding device which is attached to the pad during transport and storage of the applicator device, before the device is put to use.

Description

Pad with tearable sealing
The present invention relates to an applicator device for liquid, cream or gel together with a method for using the applicator device.
The applicator device contains an applicator pad which is supplied with the cream, liquid or gel that has to be applied and the applicator pad is enclosed in a sealed compartment which can be opened in order to put the applicator pad to use. The liquid, gel or cream contained in the applicator pad will therefore be unable to leak out or soil the holding device attached to the pad during transport and storage of the applicator device, before the device is put to use.
A well-known problem arises when a number of liquids, creams and gels have to be applied to a surface while the user wishes to avoid dirtying his hands and fingers. It is therefore desirable to be able to hold an applicator device, for example a pad-like device containing the liquid, cream or gel which has to be applied, while having one's hands and fingers protected. This may be employed, for example, when applying suntan cream, shoe cream, various coloured creams, gels or liquids or sterilised liquids such as antiseptic lotions, etc.
Furthermore, it is desirable to be able to store such creams, liquids and gels over long periods without them deteriorating. It is also extremely important that such an applicator pad should be packaged in such a manner that no liquid, cream or gel leak out of the packaging during transport and storage, soiling the packaging and thereby the user when the device is put to use.
From US 6.145.155 a flexible cleaning and drying device is known. The device is in the form of a mitt, where the user's hand is pushed down into a pouch. On one side of the pouch there is provided a pad containing a cleaning agent, while on the opposite side of the pouch there is provided an absorbent and drying pad. In order to prevent deterioration of the device, each of the pads is covered by a protective layer, where this layer is removed when the device has to be put to use.
Thus an applicator device is provided for a liquid, cream or gel, which applicator device comprises a sealed compartment for containing an applicator pad containing the liquid, cream or gel, which compartment is opened when the applicator pad has to be put to use, which applicator device comprises an upper and lower layer of a liquid-impervious material with the applicator pad for liquid, cream or gel located between the layers, which upper and lower layers are connected in a liquid- impervious manner along their lateral edges in order to form the sealed compartment and the applicator pad is supplied with the liquid, gel or cream which has to be applied. The applicator device is characterised in that the upper layer is provided with a non-through-going perforation round an area of the upper layer which forms an opening surface, that the applicator pad is connected with one side of the opening surface and that the opposite side of the opening surface is connected with a holding device which a user can grasp in order to tear the opening surface together with the applicator pad out of the sealed compartment in order to utilise the applicator device for applying the liquid, cream or gel with which the applicator pad is supplied.
In an embodiment a sealing glue surface or adhesive foil is placed over the perforation, which glue surface or adhesive foil is connected with the holding device and the opening surface. This ensures that the perforation does not begin to leak.
The holding device is preferably a flexible pouch which may be employed with one or more fingers or a whole hand.
The applicator pad is filled with an appropriate amount of the cream, liquid or gel which has to be applied before being enclosed in the sealed compartment.
When the device has to be transported or stored, the liquid, gel or cream then remains in the sealed compartment and does not leak out. The applicator device is therefore stable.
A method is further provided for use of the applicator device as mentioned above characterised in that a user grasps the holding device and detaches the opening surface from the perforation and from the upper layer, thereby releasing the applicator pad from the sealed compartment between the upper and lower layers and out through the opening in the upper layer which was formed by the perforation for use of the applicator pad.
An applicator device for liquid, cream or gel is further provided with a sealed compartment for containing an applicator pad with the liquid, cream or gel, which compartment is opened when the applicator device has to be put to use, which applicator device comprises an upper and lower layer of a liquid-impervious material with the applicator pad for liquid, cream or gel located between the layers, which upper and lower layers are connected in a liquid-impervious manner along their lateral edges in order to form the sealed compartment and the applicator pad is supplied with the liquid, gel or cream which has to be applied. The applicator device is characterised in that the upper layer is provided with an opening, which opening is covered in its entirety by a foil which is liquid-impervious and releasably connected with the upper layer along the edges of the opening where the applicator pad is connected with one side of the foil and the opposite side of the foil is connected with a holding device which a user can grasp in order to detach the foil together with the applicator pad from the upper layer and out of the sealed compartment in order to utilise the applicator device for applying the liquid, cream or gel with which the applicator pad is supplied. In an embodiment the foil is an adhesive plastic foil. This covers the opening in the upper layer, preventing the liquid, gel or cream from leaking out of the sealed compartment during transport and storage, i.e. in the period between the completion of production and use of the applicator device.
The holding device is preferably a flexible pouch which can be employed with one or more fingers or a whole hand.
A method is further provided for using the above-mentioned applicator device, characterised in that a user grasps the holding device and tears the foil off the upper layer, thereby releasing the applicator pad from the sealed compartment between the upper and lower layers and out through the opening for use of the applicator pad.
In the attached figure an embodiment of the invention is illustrated.
The figure illustrates the elements in an applicator device according to the invention in exploded form where the lower layer 5 and the upper layer 3 are located on each side of the applicator pad 4. The layers 3 and 5 are sealed along their outer edge, or near their outer edge or round the actual applicator pad 4, with the result that the pad 4 is located in a sealed compartment.
The upper layer 3 is illustrated with a perforation 3a encircling an area which may be regarded as an opening surface 3b as this is the surface that can be torn off when the applicator pad 4 has to be utilised. The figure also illustrates how a corner of the opening surface 3b is peeled back in the perforation, thereby forming an opening 3c.
According to the invention the perforation 3a is not through-going and therefore acts only as a weakening of the material in the upper layer 3 to enable the opening 3 c to be formed.
In an embodiment a foil 2 may be placed over the perforation to ensure that the perforation is leak-proof.
In an alternative embodiment the opening 3c is permanent and a foil 2 or the like is provided which is releasably but sealingly connected with the upper layer 3 along the opening 3 c.
The applicator pad 4 is further connected with the opening surface 3b as illustrated in the figure and the opening surface is furthermore connected with a holding device 1 which is illustrated in the figure as a flexible pouch into which several fingers can be pushed.
The user pushes his fingers into the pouch 1 and tears the opening surface 3b out of the upper layer 3 accompanied at the same time by the applicator pad 4 out of the sealed compartment. The applicator pad is then ready for use.
The applicator pad may be a non-absorbent material which is supplied with the liquid, cream or gel which has to be applied. The pad 4 may furthermore be completely or partly covered by a perforated surface material which may be employed for dispensing the liquid or the like which has to be applied, and possibly used for polishing where the application of a shoe cream or the like is involved.
Alternatively, the surface material may be abrasive or suitable in some other way for cleaning or removing dirt in addition to being able to apply a liquid, cream, gel or the like.
