Abstract

Provided are a method for updating map data of a terminal based on route area, and a server using the same. The includes the steps of a) when route information, route detecting method information and terminal map version are received from the terminal, determining a route on a map which is divided into unit regions based on route information and route detecting method information; b) when the terminal map version corresponding to map data of a unit region determined according to a detected route is different from a current map version of the server, extracting map data of a unit region whose map version is different from the current map data of the server; and c) transmitting the extracted unit region map data to the terminal.

Description
METHOD FOR UPDATING MAP DATA OF TERMINAL BASED ON ROUTE AREA, AND SERVER USING THE SAME
Technical Field
[1] The present invention relates to a method for updating map data of a terminal based on route area, and a server using the same; and, more particularly, to a method for updating map data of a terminal based on route area to provide updated map data to a terminal by detecting a route from departure to arrival based on map version information, departure/arrival information, and route detecting method information transmitted from the terminal and by extracting and updating update information of a map around the route, and a server using the same. Background Art
[2] A route guidance service provides a current location of a moving object to a driver of the moving object through telematics or a location-based service, calculates an optimal route to a desired destination, and provides the optimal route to the driver.
[3] A conventional route guidance service is provided from a service providing server to the terminal.
[4] To be specific, the service providing server stores map data in a form of data having numerical values and provides map data to the terminal through a wireless network. Also, the terminal stores the map data and visually guides an optimal route to a destination based on the stored map data. That is, the terminal stores information on actual roads, buildings and facilities in a regular form of map data having numerical values, corresponds location information provided from a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver to pre-stored map data, and provides an optimal route from a moving object to a destination on screen.
[5] Since actual roads, buildings and facilities are frequently changed, map data used in the terminal need to be frequently updated to reflect changed roads, buildings and facilities when the route guidance service is provided.
[6] The service providing server of the conventional route guidance service forms map data in a form of data, stores the data after dividing the region of the map into a cell and allocates the number to each of the divided cells. When a file size of the divided cells is larger than a predetermined size for transmission through a wireless network, the service providing server repeats a procedure of subdividing the divided cells such that all divided cells can be transmitted through a wireless network.
[7] When a part of data of the divided cell region among entire map data is updated, the service providing server transmits entire data of the cell including the updated data to the terminal through the wireless network. The terminal receives the entire data of the cell including the updated data through the wireless network and updates entire data of a region corresponding to the received data of the cell in the pre-stored map data region. [8] Since the terminal downloads and updates data on entire cell region including the data updated in the service providing server, the terminal should download a large quantity of data. Accordingly, a terminal user should pay expensive service fee for using the wireless network to update the map data. [9] In the update method, the terminal capable of partly updating the map updates data for the region selected by the user. However, it is uncomfortable for the user to find the region and request update by manipulating the terminal.

Technical Problem
[10] An embodiment of the present invention is directed to providing a method for updating map data of a terminal based on route area to provide updated map data to a terminal by detecting a route from departure to arrival based on map version information, departure/arrival information, and route detecting method information transmitted from the terminal and by extracting and updating update information of a map around the route, and a server using the same.
[11] Other objects and advantages of the present invention can be understood by the following description, and become apparent with reference to the embodiments of the present invention. Also, it is obvious to those skilled in the art of the present invention that the objects and advantages of the present invention can be realized by the means as claimed and combinations thereof. Technical Solution
[12] In accordance with an aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method for updating map data of a terminal based on route area in a server providing server, including the steps of: a) when route information, route detecting method information and terminal map version are received from the terminal, determining a route on a map which is divided into unit regions based on route information and route detecting method information; b) when the terminal map version corresponding to map data of a unit region determined according to a detected route is different from a current map version of the server, extracting map data of a unit region whose map version is different from the current map data of the server; and c) transmitting the extracted unit region map data to the terminal.
[13] In accordance with another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a server for updating map data of a terminal by detecting a route based on route information inputted by a user, including: a storing unit for storing map data formed according to map version and each unit region; a communicating unit for receiving route information, route detecting method information and terminal map version from the terminal and transmitting the extracted map data; a route determining unit for detecting a route on a pre-stored map based on the route information and the route detecting method information; a map version managing unit for checking whether a terminal map version of the unit region map data formed according to the detected route is different from the stored map version; and a update region extracting unit for extracting map data of a unit region corresponding to the map version checked in the map version managing unit, and transmitting the extracted unit region map data to the communicating unit.
Advantageous Effects
[14] Since the present invention updates only in a region around a determined route in a terminal, it is possible to reduce the communication cost and consumption time for update.
[15] Also, according to the present invention, a region to be updated is not selected in the terminal, but a region around a route provided by a service providing server is selected and update map data of the region is transmitted. Accordingly, the present invention can provide convenience to the user.
[16] The present invention can be applied to navigation, public facilities management, a location-based service, and military operations, which requires partial map data update in real-time. Brief Description of the Drawings

[21] As shown in Fig. 1, the server for updating map data in the terminal 20 based on the route area according to the present invention, which is called a service providing server 10, includes a server communicating unit 11, a server route determining unit 12, a server map version managing unit 13, a update region extracting unit 14, and a server storage 15. Also, the terminal 20, to which the present invention is applied, includes a terminal communicating unit 21, a route setup unit 22, a terminal map version managing unit 23, a terminal map data managing unit 24, a terminal storage 25, a map expressing unit 26, and a terminal route detecting unit 27.
[22] Constituent elements of the terminal 20 will be described first for the sake of convenience in explanation. In particular, the route setup unit 22, the terminal map version managing unit 23, the terminal map data managing unit 24 and the terminal storage 25 of the constituent elements of the terminal 20 are used to update map data.
[23] The terminal communicating unit 21 communicates with the server communicating unit 11 of the service providing server 10 through a wireless network. That is, the terminal communicating unit 21 requests update to the service providing server 10 and unifies information transmitted from the route setup unit 22 and the terminal map version managing unit 23, i.e., unifies departure/arrival information, route detecting method information and a terminal map version to be described below. Subsequently, the terminal communicating unit 21 transmits the unified information to the service providing server 10. Also, the terminal communicating unit 21 transmits the server map data, which are transmitted from the service providing server 10 as a response to the update request, to the terminal map data managing unit 24.
[24] The route setup unit 22 transmits route information on departure and arrival inputted by the user, i.e., departure/arrival information, to the terminal communicating unit 21. The route setup unit 22 transmits information on the method for detecting a route based on the departure/arrival information inputted by the user, which is called route detecting method information, to the terminal communicating unit 21.
[25] Additionally, the route setup unit 22 may include passage information in the departure/arrival information.
[26] The terminal map version managing unit 23 manages the terminal map version stored in the terminal storage 25. Also, the terminal map version managing unit 23 transmits the terminal map version to the terminal communicating unit 21. The terminal map data managing unit 24 manages the terminal map data stored in the terminal storage 25.
[27] When the service providing server 10 transmits the server map data through the terminal communicating unit 21, the terminal map data managing unit 24 checks a map version of the server map data. Simultaneously, the terminal map data managing unit 24 checks a map version of the terminal map data pre-stored in the terminal storage 25 through the terminal map version managing unit 23. Subsequently, the terminal map data managing unit 24 compares the map version of the server map data transmitted from the service providing server 10 with the map version of the terminal map data pre-stored in the terminal storage 25. When the server map data transmitted from the service providing server 10 are the newest version, the terminal map data managing unit 24 updates the terminal map data pre-stored in the terminal storage 25 into the server map data.
[28] The terminal storage 25 stores and manages the terminal map data and the terminal map version, which are formed according to each unit region and formed as data. When the map data are updated, the terminal map data and the terminal map version of the terminal storage 25 become the same as server map data and a server map version to be described below.
[29] Additionally, the terminal map data include the point of interest (POI) for search and roads network data, just as the server map data to be described below. Also, the terminal map version includes date when the map data are updated, just as the server map version to be described below.
[30] In the constituent elements of the terminal 20, the map expressing unit 26 and the terminal route detecting unit 27 are used to express the map and detect the route. The map expressing unit 26 expresses the terminal map data updated in the terminal storage 25.
[31] The terminal route detecting unit 27 corresponds the current location of the terminal
20 checked by the GPS receiver to the terminal map data expressed by the map expressing unit 26, detects and provides an optimal route based on departure/arrival information of the terminal map data. The constituent elements of the service providing server 10 will be described hereinafter.
[32] The server communicating unit 11, the server route determining unit 12, the server map version managing unit 13, the update region extracting unit 14 and the server storage 15 among the constituent elements of the service providing server 10 are used to update an operation map based on the route area according to the present invention.
[33] The server communicating unit 11 communicates with the terminal communicating unit 21 of the terminal 20 through a wireless network. That is, the server communicating unit 11 transmits the departure/arrival information and the route detecting method information transmitted from the terminal 20 to the server route determining unit 12.
[34] Also, the server communicating unit 11 transmits the terminal map version transmitted from the terminal 20 to the server map version managing unit 13. The server communicating unit 11 transmits the server map data transmitted from the update region extracting unit 14 to the terminal 20 through a wireless network.
[35] The server route determining unit 12 detects a route from departure to arrival based on the departure/arrival information and the route detecting method information transmitted from the terminal 20. The server route determining unit 12 detects the route according to the same route detecting method provided from the terminal 20. Accordingly, the identical updated map data can be provided based on the route area to be provided to the terminal 20.
[36] Additionally, it is preferred that the server route determining unit 12 detects the shortest route from departure to arrival based on the route detecting method information.
[37] When passage information is included in the departure/arrival information from the terminal 20, it is preferred that the server route determining unit 12 detects the shortest route from departure to passage and from departure to arrival.
[38] The server map version managing unit 13 compares the terminal map version transmitted from the terminal 20 with the server map version stored in the server storage 15 in the route detected in the server route determining unit 12. When the server map version is newer than the terminal map version, the server map version managing unit 13 requests the update region extracting unit 14 to extract a region to be updated.
[39] When the server map version managing unit 13 requests the update region extracting unit 14 to extract the region to be updated, the update region extracting unit 14 extracts the server map data of the region around the route detected in the server route determining unit 12 from the server storage 15 and transmits the extracted server map data to the server communicating unit 11.
[40] The server storage 15 stores and manages the server map data and server map version, which are formed according to each unit region and formed as data. The server storage 15 maintains the server map data as the updated newest version and maintains the server map version as a map version for each terminal.
[41] Fig. 2 is a flowchart describing a method for updating map data in the terminal 20 based on route area in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention.
[42] Before Fig. 2 is described, the service providing server 10 is connected with the terminal 20 through the wireless network according to the general method.
[43] As shown in Fig. 2, the terminal 20 receives departure/arrival information inputted by the user at step SlOl. While the terminal 20 transmits the route detecting method information and the terminal map version with the departure/arrival information to the service providing server 10 and requests update at step S 102.
[44] The service providing server 10 detects a route from departure to arrival based on the departure/arrival information and the route detecting method information transmitted from the terminal 20 at step S 103. That is, the service providing server 10 detects a route on the server map data, which are formed according to each unit region, based on the departure/arrival information and the route detecting method information, i.e., the route information transmitted from the terminal 20.
[45] The service providing server 10 compares the terminal map version and the server map version transmitted from the terminal 20 in the detected route and extracts a region to be updated from the pre-stored server map data based on the detected route at step S 104. That is, when the terminal map version corresponding to unit region map data, which are formed according to the detected route, is different from the server map version, the service providing server 10 extracts unit region map data corresponding the different map version from the server map data.
[46] While the service providing server 10 transmits the server map data to the terminal
20, the service providing server 10 responds to the update request at step S 105.
[47] When it turns out at step S 106 that the server map data transmitted from the service providing server 10 are the newest version, the terminal 20 updates own pre-stored terminal map data into the transmitted server map data at step S 107. The terminal 20 detects the route based on the updated terminal map data at step S 108.

Claims
[1] A method for updating map data of a terminal based on route area in a service providing server, comprising the steps of: a) when route information, route detecting method information and terminal map version are received from the terminal, determining a route on a map which is divided into unit regions based on route information and route detecting method information; b) when the terminal map version corresponding to map data of a unit region determined according to a detected route is different from a current map version of the server, extracting map data of a unit region whose map version is different from the current map data of the server; and c) transmitting the extracted unit region map data to the terminal.
[2] The method of claim 1, wherein the extracted map data are the map data of the newest version.
[3] A server for updating map data of a terminal by detecting a route based on route information inputted by a user, comprising: a storing means for storing map data formed according to map version and each unit region; a communicating means for receiving route information, route detecting method information and terminal map version from the terminal and transmitting the extracted map data; a route determining means for detecting a route on a pre-stored map based on the route information and the route detecting method information; a map version managing means for checking whether a terminal map version of the unit region map data formed according to the detected route is different from the stored map version; and a update region extracting means for extracting map data of a unit region corresponding to the map version checked in the map version managing means, and transmitting the extracted unit region map data to the communicating means.
[4] The server of claim 3, wherein the storing means maintains the map data in the newest updated version.
