Abstract

Connecting device for a measuring apparatus for carrying out measurements in a space closed or sealed off by a wall, such as the space within a pipe, tube, casing or any other housing part of an appliance, characterized in that it is formed by a plate shaped part on to which a body is mounted, the diameter of which body is smaller than the diameter of the plate shaped part, while the connecting device is intended to be placed in an opening to be made in the wall, the diameter of which opening is larger than the diameter of the body but smaller than the diameter of the plate shaped part, in such a way, that the body can be sunk in the opening in the wall while the plate shaped part remains supported at its edge on the wall, whereby the plate shaped part and the body are provided with at least one measuring opening through which the space is accessible to the measuring apparatus, and whereby the outer side of the body is provided with clamping feet protruding in the direction of the bottom side of the plate shaped part for the clamping of the wall between the clamping feet and the plate shaped part.

Description

DEVICE FOR CONNECTING PIPES THROUGH A WALL
The present invention relates to a connecting device for a measuring apparatus for carrying out measurements in a space closed or sealed off by a wall, such as the space within a pipe, tube, casing or any other housing part of an appliance.
It is known to integrate such a device in the manufacture of an appliance as a fixed part of the appliance.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a connecting device which in a simple manner can be built in in existing appliances.
The connecting device according to the invention to that end is characterized in that it is formed by a plate shaped part on to which a body is mounted, the diameter of which body is smaller than the diameter of the plate shaped part, while the connecting device is intended to be placed in an opening to be made in the wall, the diameter of which opening is larger than the diameter of the body but smaller than the diameter of the plate shaped part, in such a way, that the body can be sunk in the opening in the wall while the plate shaped part remains supported at its edge on the wall, whereby the plate shaped part and the body are provided with at least one measuring opening through which the space is accessible to the measuring apparatus, and whereby the outer side of the body is provided with clamping feet protruding in the direction of the bottom side of the plate shaped part for the clamping of the wall between the clamping feet and the plate shaped part.
The body and the plate shaped part can have any given form. According to a characteristic of the device according to the invention the body has in section a round shape, while according to another characteristic of the device according to the invention the plate shaped part is round.
The connecting device according to the invention can be built in in existing appliances in a simple manner. To that end in the wall limiting the space in which periodically measurements have to be carried out an opening is made, for instance by means of a hole saw, after which the body of the device is slid in the opening until the wall butts against the bottom side of the plate shaped part, whereby the plate shaped part covers the opening. To that end according to a further characteristic of the device according to the invention the plate shaped part is flat, spherical or hollow, so that the device is adapted to a flat wall or a round or hollow wall, while a sufficient sealing of the opening can be obtained.
In a favourable embodiment of the connecting device according to the invention in at least one measuring opening a measuring tube is provided, the length of which, according to a further characteristic, is larger than the distance between the wall and a second wall provided at a distance there from in the appliance. This is suitable for carrying out measurements in double-walled systems, for instance in two concentric tubes.
The device shall now be described further with reference to the drawings of an example of an embodiment.
Figure 1 shows a perspective view of the connecting device mounted to a double- walled tube system.
Figure 2 shows in section a top view of the connecting device mounted to a tube system in the manner shown in figure 1.
Figure 3 shows in section a side view of a connecting device mounted to a single tube.
Figure 4 shows in section a side view of the connecting device shown in figure 3 but now mounted to a double-walled tube system.
Figure 5 shows an embodiment of the device according to the invention having one measuring opening, in which a measuring tube is fitted.
Figure 6 shows the embodiment of the device according to figure 5, in which a venturi tube is fitted. As is shown in the figures the connecting device 1 for a measuring apparatus (not shown in the drawings) for carrying out measurements in a space 3 closed or sealed off by a wall 2 in an appliance is formed by a plate shaped part 4 to the bottom side 5 of which a body 6 is mounted. In the example of the embodiment shown in the drawings the body 6 has in section a round shape. The diameter, indicated by the measuring line A, of the body 6 is smaller than the diameter, indicated by the measuring line B, of the plate shaped part 4. After an opening 7 is made in the wall 2 having a diameter that is larger than the diameter of the body 6, in this example of an embodiment a round opening by means of hole saw, the connecting device 1 is fitted therein, as can be seen in the figures 1, 3 and 4. The diameter of the opening 7 is smaller than the diameter of the plate shaped part 4, in such a way, that the body 6 can sink in the opening 7 in the wall 2 while the plate shaped part 4 remains supported at its edge 8 on the wall 2 and the opening 7 in the wall 2 is covered by the plate shaped part 4. The plate shaped part 4 and the body 6 are provided with two measuring openings 9 and 10 through which the space 3 is accessible to a measuring apparatus. As can be seen in the figures the body 6 all round is provided with clamping feet 12 protruding in the direction of the bottom side 5 of the plate shaped part 4 for the clamping of the wall 2 between the clamping feet 12 and the plate shaped part 4 and for the formation of a seal. The measuring opening with the device according to the invention is closable and to that end is provided with any seal fixing means. In the example of an embodiment of the device according to the invention shown in the figures 2, 3 and 4 the measuring opening 9, 10 to that end is provided with an internal screw thread 13.
In figure 4 the connecting device is shown mounted to a double- walled tube system. As described above to that end by means of for instance a hole saw an opening 7 is made in the wall 2. The opening 7 is large enough to allow access to a second wall 14 provided in the appliance at a distance from the wall 2 and to allow the making of an opening 15 therein. In the measuring opening 10 a measuring tube 16 is provided the length of which is greater than the distance between the wall 2 and the second wall 14 in the appliance, and which measuring tube 16 is led through the opening 15 in the second wall 14. The measuring tube 16 is provided with sealing means 17 at the place of the second wall 14, such as a rib or any other sealing means. The measuring tube 16 can be chosen in any length and/or shape, so that the device is suitable for any given diameter and/or distance between the walls.
In the manner shown in figure 4 it is possible to carry out a measurement from outside through the measuring opening 9 in the space 3, and to carry out a measurement through the opening 10 in the second space 18 in the appliance. The spaces 3 and 18 are not mutually connected to each other.
The connecting device according to the invention makes it possible to carry out different sorts of measurements, for instance by adapting the measuring tube, in spaces that are filled with a gas or liquid substance or a combination thereof.
Figure 5 shows another embodiment of the device according to the invention with in it only one measuring opening 19, in which a measuring tube 20 is fitted, whereby the device is mounted to a double-walled tube system. To that end in the same manner as described above by means of for instance a hole saw an opening 7 is made in the wall 2. Further an opening 15 is made in the second wall 14. Following that the measuring tube 20 is adapted to the proper length and is inserted through the openings 7 and 15. On the outer side the measuring tube is provided with a thickening or projection 21, in such a way, that the diameter of the measuring tube 20 at the place of the thickening 21 is greater than the diameter of the opening 15 in the second wall 14, so that the thickening 21 prevents a further inserting of the measuring tube 20 inside the space 18. Between the thickening 21 and the second wall 14 as a seal an O-ring 22 is provided . Instead of an O-ring to that end also use can be made of any other form of a seal. After the measuring tube 20 has been inserted inside, the connecting device 1 according to the invention is fitted in the opening 7 in the wall 2, whereby a thickening or projection 23 provided on the inner side of the measuring opening 19 comes to rest on the upper edge 24 of the measuring tube 20, and by means of which the measuring tube 20 is locked between the second wall 14 and the projection 23. The device is clamped by means of the clamping feet 12 to the wall 2. The measuring opening 19 on the inner side is provided with an O-ring seal 25 for the seal between the measuring tube 20 and the measuring opening 19. Further a measuring nipple 26 can be provided in the measuring opening 19 and by means of which a closing off of the measuring opening is formed.
Figure 6 shows an embodiment of the device according to figure 5, with a venturi tube 27 provided therein.
The invention is not limited to the examples of the embodiments described herein. For a single-walled system a connecting device suffices in which a short measuring tube is fitted. The manner of locking of the measuring tube as described in the example of the embodiment according to figure 5 can also be applied in the example of the embodiment described in the figures 1-4. Thinkable is further any other form of connection for connecting the device to the wall, among which any other form of snap-connection. The device can be manufactured out of one piece of material or not. Further the device, depending on the intended application, can be made out of plastic or metal.
The sort of seals that are to be used depend on the application.
By means of the invention a universal connecting device for a measuring apparatus is provided by means of which in a simple manner periodic measurements can be carried out in double- walled systems, such as for instance two concentric tubes. The device can be applied in existing systems, but can also be integrated in new or yet to be developed systems. By means of the device measurements can be carried out in spaces that are surrounded by another space, filled with another medium, without these being able to affect each other. Thinkable is the application in for instance: flue gas analyses, pressure difference measurements, temperature measurements, flow measurements, continuous monitoring, continuous measurement, and such like. The device can be universally applied, because the measuring tube can be adapted to any desired length and any desired shape and in this manner is suitable for any given diameter and /or distance between the walls. Measuring instruments or apparatuses can be connected temporarily or permanently. After a temporary measurement measuring openings can simply be closed. The device can be fitted in a simple manner by means of making two openings with a hole saw. The spaces are not mutually connected to each other. The device according to the invention can further be applied to single-walled systems, to round as well as flat walls, to different diameters, to spaces filled with gas or liquid, for air treatment. When use is made at high temperatures and/or pressures, use can be made of a device made out of high- grade materials.

C l a i m s
1. Connecting device for a measuring apparatus for carrying out measurements in a space closed or sealed off by a wall, such as the space within a pipe, tube, casing or any other housing part of an appliance, characterized in that it is formed by a plate shaped part on to which a body is mounted, the diameter of which body is smaller than the diameter of the plate shaped part, while the connecting device is intended to be placed in an opening to be made in the wall, the diameter of which opening is larger than the diameter of the body but smaller than the diameter of the plate shaped part, in such a way, that the body can be sunk in the opening in the wall while the plate shaped part remains supported at its edge on the wall, whereby the plate shaped part and the body are provided with at least one measuring opening through which the space is accessible to the measuring apparatus, and whereby the outer side of the body is provided with clamping feet protruding in the direction of the bottom side of the plate shaped part for the clamping of the wall between the clamping feet and the plate shaped part.
2. Connecting device according to claim 1, characterized in that the body has in section a round shape.
3. Connecting device according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the plate shaped part is round.
4. Connecting device according to claim 1, 2 or 3, characterized in that the plate shaped part is flat, spherical or hollow.
5. Connecting device according to claim 1, 2, 3 or 4, characterized in that the measuring opening is closable.
6. Connecting device according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the measuring opening is provided with sealing or closing means, such as an internal screw thread or an outer screw thread or otherwise, for instance a toroidal sealing ring.
7. Connecting device according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that in at least one measuring opening a measuring tube is provided.
8. Connecting device according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that in at least one measuring opening a measuring tube is provided the length of which is greater than the distance between the wall and a second wall provided at a distance there from in the appliance.
9. Connecting device according to claim 8, characterized in that the measuring tube at the outer side is provided with a thickening, such, that the diameter of the measuring tube at the place of the thickening is larger than the diameter of the opening in the second wall.
10. Connecting device according to claim 7, 8 or 9, characterized in that the measuring tube at the outer side is provided with sealing means, such as a sealing ring, a rib or a strip.
11. Connecting device according to claim 10, characterized in that the sealing means are formed by an elastic material.
