Description
Construction element and assembly of such construction elements
This invention relates, on the one hand, to a construction element comprising a number of side faces and, on the other hand, to an assembly of at least one connecting piece and at least two construction elements comprising a number of side faces.
Construction elements are already known per se. Such elements, in which the various construction elements are provided with mating projections and cut-outs for joining together the individual construction elements, are commonly used for forming a floor covering.
For instance, French patent publication FR 2 343 861 discloses a modular system for walls or floors comprising three types of tile element: - A first type that is made up of two layers of approximately the same thickness, one placed above the other, the edges situated opposite each other on a first layer being provided with a projection, and the two remaining edges on the second layer being provided with a cut-out complementary to the projections; - A second type is a flat tile made up of one layer, without projections or cutouts;
- A third type has a shape complementary to the second layer of the tile of the first type.
A wall or floor surface can now be formed by positioning the abovementioned tile elements correctly relative to each other. However, this procedure has the disadvantage that in order to form a wall surface or floor surface, it is necessary to have three different types of elements, which then still have to be combined correctly. This is time-consuming and expensive.
The object of this invention is to provide a construction element that can be combined quickly and easily with other, similar construction elements in order to form, for example, floors, wall surfaces and other three-dimensional structures.
The object of the invention is achieved by providing a construction element comprising a number of side faces, the abovementioned construction element comprising at least one channel with opening which opens into a side face, which channel is provided in order to accommodate partially at least one connecting piece, characterized in that similar cut-outs are situated on either side of the channel opening, above and below the abovementioned channel opening respectively.
In a preferred embodiment of the construction element according to the invention one channel opens into each side face of the construction element.
According to a more preferred embodiment of the construction element according to the invention, each side face is provided with one channel opening for the abovementioned channel, the channel having a uniform cross section over its full length. The abovementioned channel opening is in particular centrally situated in the side face.
According to a special embodiment of the construction element according to the invention, the abovementioned cut-outs are preferably situated on either side of the vertical axis of symmetry of the side face. The length of the cut-outs is preferably a maximum of approximately half the length of the side face.
According to a particularly advantageous embodiment of the construction element according to the invention, the abovementioned cut-outs are approximately the same height. More particularly, the depth of the cut-out corresponds approximately to the height of the cut-out.
Another subject of this patent application relates to an assembly of at least one connecting piece and at least two construction elements comprising a number of side faces. The assembly according to the invention is characterized in that each of the abovementioned construction elements comprises at least one channel with opening which opens into a side face, similar cut-outs being situated on either side of the channel opening, above and below the channel opening respectively, and the abovementioned channels of abutting construction elements being provided so that they each accommodate a part of the connecting piece, thereby joining together the abutting construction elements.
The abovementioned assembly preferably comprises at least two construction elements of the type described above.
In a preferred embodiment of the assembly according to the invention at least two connecting pieces each comprise at least one slit, which is provided in order to join the connecting pieces transversely to each other, so that in the connected state the abovementioned pieces form a cross. This makes it possible to build further in various directions and in this way to achieve a three-dimensional structure. The abovementioned slit is preferably of the same width as the thickness of the connecting pieces. In particular, the slit extends approximately halfway across the width of the connecting pieces.
In a special embodiment of the assembly the connecting pieces comprise on at least one end an end face that is designed in such a way that it butts up against the end face of at least one other connecting piece. This has the advantage, inter alia, that a firmly wedged construction is produced.
In a most special embodiment of the assembly according to the invention the abovementioned assembly is provided so as to form a three-dimensional construction.
This invention is now explained further with reference to the detailed description that follows of a preferred construction element according to the invention. The aim of this description is purely to give a clarifying example and to indicate further advantages and details of this invention, so that this description cannot in any way be interpreted as a limitation of the field of application of the invention or of the patent rights applied for in the claims.

The construction element (1) according to the invention is preferably made of wood, plastic, concrete, metal or injection moulded aluminium and, depending on its shape, has three, four, five or more side faces. As can be seen, inter alia, from Figures 1 to
4, the abovementioned construction element (1) comprises a number of channels (2) running through the construction element (1). According to this invention, only one channel will open out on each side face, so only one channel opening (4) is provided per side face. The abovementioned channels (2) are provided so as to partially accommodate at least one connecting piece (3). By means of said connecting pieces (3) it is possible to join together abutting construction elements (1) and in this way to form two-dimensional or three-dimensional constructions.
Furthermore, the various side faces of the construction element (1) according to the invention have a specific shape. This makes it possible in combination with various types of connecting pieces (3) to form sturdily interconnected two-dimensional or three-dimensional constructions without making use of working aids, nails, screws or other connecting means. Furthermore, the constructions formed can be disassembled again reasonably easily and quickly, without damage to the various parts from which the construction has been assembled. The disassembled pieces can then be reused in other constructions.
As can be seen from Figures 1 to 3, the construction element (1) can be in different shapes, a number of possibilities being: triangular, square, rectangular, hexagonal, polygonal etc. Depending on the shape of the construction element (1), the construction element (1) therefore has three, four, six or more side faces. As stated earlier, only one channel opening (4) is provided per side face. According to a special feature of this invention, each channel opening (4) is situated centrally in the respective side face. So long as the central channel openings (4) of different construction elements (1) are the same height and width, combining the different shapes of construction elements (1) is no problem whatsoever.
The channels (2) have over their full length a uniform cross section, with the result that the shape of the channel opening (4) is complementary to the shape of the channel (2) extending towards the side face. The channel openings (4) are preferably rectangular in shape. However, as shown in Figure 5, different shapes of channel opening (4), such as, for example, oval or circular, are likewise possible.
In order to achieve an interconnected unit, each side edge has a specific shape; in particular similar cut-outs (5) are situated on either side of the channel opening (4),
above and below the abovementioned channel opening (4) respectively. As shown in Figure 1 and Figure 5, the abovementioned cut-outs (5) are situated on either side of the vertical axis of symmetry (Xv) of the side face concerned. The length of the cutouts is a maximum of approximately half the length of the side face (for this see Figs 5a and 5c). The cut-outs (5) situated above and below the channel opening (4) are approximately the same height. The depth of the cut-out (5) approximately corresponds to the height of the cut-out (5). As can be seen from Figure 5b, a number of cut-outs can be provided on either side of the vertical axis of symmetry (Xv). The cut-outs are situated in such a way that the part that is cut out on the left of the vertical axis of symmetry (Xv) is specifically not cut out on the right of the vertical axis of symmetry (Xv), and vice versa. The part that is cut out above the horizontal axis of symmetry (Xh) (above the channel opening) is specifically not cut out below the horizontal axis of symmetry (Xh) (below the channel opening), and vice versa.
Depending on the application, the construction elements according to the invention will have an open, a semi-open or a closed structure. For instance, the construction elements shown in Figures 1 to 3 and Figure 6 have a closed structure, and a tile element, as it were, is formed, which element can be used for forming a closed wall or floor. However, as shown in Figure 7, the construction element can also have an open structure, in which the central part in particular is left open. The faces indicated by reference numeral 9 are necessary for forming the channels.
In order to form an assembly according to the invention, the various construction elements (1) are joined together by means of connecting pieces (3), made of wood, plastic, aluminium, concrete, steel or cast steel. In order to join together, for example, two construction elements (1), the connecting piece (3) will be pushed partly into a channel (2) of the one construction element (1), and the remaining part of the connecting piece is pushed into a channel (2) of the other construction element (1). The two construction elements are then pushed against each other. Because of the specific design of the side face and the connecting pieces, the two construction elements (1) will butt up perfectly against each other, and it will no longer be possible for them to be rotated relative to each other.
Various three-dimensional structures can be formed with the assembly according to the invention, for example: CD shelving and book shelving, cable ducts, construction
toys, permanent formwork, shop fittings, sound-insulating walls, stand constructions, temporary closures etc.
The connecting pieces (3) can be of different shapes and may or may not be provided with an end face of a specific shape. Figure 8 shows a basic connecting piece, which is a rectangular plate whose width and thickness approximately correspond to the width and height of the channel opening (4). In order to be able to build further transversely to a specific direction, the connecting piece (3) comprises a slit (6). Said slit (6) preferably lies in the centre of the connecting piece (3) (viewed in the longitudinal direction). This makes it possible, as shown in Figure 9, to join two connecting pieces (3) transversely to each other, so that the above pieces form a cross in the connected state. Such connecting pieces (3) joined in a cross shape comprise four parts, each of which can be pushed into a channel of a different construction element (1) (see, for example Figure 10).
As can be seen from Figures 11 to 21, variations on the basic connecting piece (3) are possible. With the elongated connecting piece shown in Figure 11, two or more construction elements (1) can be joined together in a taut line. In this way bridges can be made without losing tension. These connecting pieces are also provided with slits (6) placed at a certain distance from each other. Any other connecting piece (3) can be attached to each slit so as to construct further in the direction perpendicular to it. A construction element (1) fits between two slits (6). At the central position between the slits (6) the thickness of the connecting piece (3) is reduced by half (indicated by a diagonal cross (8) in the figures), in such a way that such an elongated (or another) connecting piece (3) can also be placed in the other direction.
The connecting pieces shown in Figure 12 are used for placing on the end points and/or corner points of the constructions. The piece shown in Figure 12a is placed over the slit of an already positioned connecting piece when no further construction is to be performed in the direction perpendicular to it. The piece shown in Figure 12b is placed over the slit of an already positioned connecting piece when further construction is to be only in one direction (forwards or exclusively backwards). The connecting piece shown in Figure 13 is provided with a hinged connection.
Some connecting pieces (3) can be provided with a specifically designed end face (7) on one end or on both ends, as shown in Figures 15 to 21. Said end faces are designed in such a way that they butt up against the end face (7) of other connecting pieces. This means that if such a connecting piece is provided in each channel (see, for example Figures 17 and 21), the various end faces in the central area formed by the crossing of the various channels will butt up perfectly against each other. By providing such end faces, it is ensured that the effect of gravity is overcome and it is possible, for example, to begin constructing in the downward direction on an existing ceiling.
A specially designed connecting piece (3) is shown in Figure 18. In this case the connecting piece is provided on its one end with an end face in the form of a trapezoidal projection. The other end comprises a cut-out that is complementary to the trapezoidal projection. The thickness of the two (trapezoidal end face and trapezoidal projection) is half the thickness of the connecting piece. If, as shown in Figure 19, various construction elements (1) are now to be joined together by means of connecting pieces designed in this way, the first piece (a) will be connected to the second piece (b) (shown on the right and left in Figure 19) by placing the projection of the first piece in the cut-out of the second piece; the third piece (c) and the fourth piece (d) are then joined together in a similar way.
As shown in Figures 20 and 21, all connecting elements can be combined with each other by providing a jigsaw connection on the connecting elements.
