Definitions
- the object of the present invention is a locking/unlocking apparatus for the actuation, for example, of electrically- driven locksets of a type normally used for closing and opening doors .
- Locksets are known which replace the traditional metal keys by electrically operated systems.
- these electrical systems may consist, alternatively, of: punch cards, magnetic cards, remote control devices or transponders.
- the above locksets have some drawbacks.
- biometric systems allow the individual identification of a person through the analysis of the geometry of the hand, or the iris or the face and, therefore, ensure a very high lockset's safety level.
- Fig. 1 Shown in Fig. 1 is a system comprising an enclosure with fingerprints reader for the identification step, and a digit keypad for the authentication step by insertion of a passaword; the whole is applied on the outer surface of a door being equipped with the present lockset.
- the external application of the system does not prevent the removal thereof, so that an ill-intentioned person could be able to gain access to the internal mechanism of the lockset.
- the object of the present invention is to avoid the above indicated drawbacks by providing a locking/unlocking apparatus and an electrically operated lockset, which allow, by using them individually or in combination with one another, a significant safety level.
- a further object of the present invention is a control system which utilizes, in place of the metal key, a key peripheral, advantageously a biometric key peripheral with
- USB interface Such control system being cost-effective and easy to be used.

- - Fig. 19 is a perspective view of the second embodiment of a lockset, according to the present invention, in locking position; and - Fig. 20 shows the lockset of Figs. 18 and 19 in the position for the operation of the latch.
- the electrically-operated lockset comprises a frame 5 applicable to a door, a mechanism 14 disposed within the frame 5 for actuating the latch 6, a block 10 connected to the frame 5 and having a cylindrical recess 25 formed therein for the free rotation of a first tooth 16 fixed directly on a drive bar 4, and a region 22, axially offset with respect to the recess 25, where the same tooth 16 is prevented from rotating.
- the lockset further comprises an electromagnet 13 connected to the block 10, and having a pivot 17 movable between a position in which it extends into the recess 25 and a position in which it is removed therefrom, the drive bar 4 being movable inside the mechanism 14 and the block 10.
- the bar 4 is axially slidable between a forward position for the locking of latch 6, and a backward position for the unlocking of same latch.
- a first tooth 16 which results disposed within the recess 22 and into abutment against the pivot 17 extending into the circular recess 25 when the bar
- a second tooth 15 which results operatively connected to the mechanism 14 for actuating the latch 6 when the bar 4 is in the unlocking position, while the same tooth results disengaged from the mechanism 14 when the bar 4 is in the locking position.
- the electromagnet 13 is double-acting and is operated by a control unit 27 to which it is linked via a connection 35.
- the operation of the electromagnet 13 takes place through the insertion of a key-with-password peripheral 1, preferably of biometric USB pen-drive type, into a USB female connector disposed on the frame 5 and connected for the acknowledgment thereof to the control unit 27 via a connection 34.
- a key-with-password peripheral preferably of biometric USB pen-drive type
- the acknowledgment of the pen-drive 1 is signalled by a lit-up LED 9 disposed directly on the frame 5 at a position in plain view for the user.
- the electrically controlled lockset also comprises a handgrip means 23 fixed to one end of the drive bar 4, and at least one handle 7 connected to the frame 5 to facilitate the opening/closing of a door provided with a lockset according to the present invention.
- each password is univocally correlated with one user, and it is possible to predispose a "matrix" pen- drive which, besides activating the mechanism, allows enabling further accesses, each access being associated to its own password stored in a corresponding pen-drive.
- the operation of the electrically controlled lockset according to the invention is characterized in particular by three successive steps: one step in which the lockset is in locked condition, one step in which the lockset is released and, finally, the opening and closing step.
- the first step is characterized in that the handgrip means 24 applied on one end of the drive bar 4 is in contact with the abutment element 11, so that the first tooth 16, formed on the same bar 4, lies within the region 22 in which the rotation is prevented.
- Figs. 7 and 8 show the condition in which the lockset is released.
- This step begins with the insertion of the pen-drive 1, which is advantageously of biometric type, into the female connector 2, preferably of USB type, applied to the frame
- the LED 9 for the acknowledgment lights up, and the pen-drive 1 sends an identification and authentication signal to the lockset, respectively by the recognition of a hand-imprint and the delivery of a password.
- the electromagnet 13 is excited, and this is cause for the pivot 17 to be displaced from the position in which it extends into the cylindrical recess 25 to the one in which it is fully retracted inside the same electromagnet 13.
- the opening/closing step is characterized by the clockwise or anticlockwise rotation of bar 4.
- the matrix pen-drive 1 is to be inserted at least twice into the suitable connector 2 so as to allow the lockset to recognize that such pen-drive 1 is the only one enabling new accesses with different pen-drives.
- Described with reference to Figs. 15 to 20 is a second embodiment of the lockset according to the present invention.
- this preferred embodiment comprises a frame 5 applicable to a door, a window or any movable shutter for the activation of a latch 6, and formed thereinside is a hollow area 28 for the free rotation of a tooth 29 fixed directly on a drive bar 4, and a region 30 wherein the tooth is prevented from rotating, the region 30 being defined by a slot 32 formed directly on at least one plate 33 of frame 5.
- the lockset also comprises an electromagnet 13 having a pivot 17 which is movable between a position of contact with a constrasting element 31 fixed to the drive bar 4 (Figs. 15 and 18), and a retracted position (Figs. 16-17 and 19-20) in which the pivot does not interfere with the element 31.
- the bar 4 is axially slidable between a forward, unlocking position (Figs. 16-17 and 19-20) and a bacward, locking position of latch 6 (Figs. 15 and 18).
- the electromagnet 13 is operated by a control unit 27 to which it is linked via a connection 35.
- the operation of the electromagnet 13 is carried out through the insertion of a key-with-password peripheral 1, preferably of biometric USB pen-drive type, into a USB female connector disposed on the frame 5 and connected for acknowledgment thereof to the control unit 27 via a connection 34.
- the acknowledgment of the pen-drive 1 is signalled by a lit-up LED 9 disposed directly on the frame 5, at a position in plain view for the user.
- the lockset also comprises a handgrip means
- each password is univocally correlated with one user, and it is possible to predispose a "matrix" pen-drive which, besides activating the mechanism, allows enabling more accesses, each access being associated to its own password stored in a corresponding pen-drive.
- the electromagnet 13 drives the pivot 17 to the retracted position (Fig. 16) .
- the drive bar 4 slides until the contrasting element 31 is in contact with the abutment element 12.
- a subsequent rotation of bar 4 by the user makes it possible to operate the latch 6 through the corresponding rotation of tooth 29 solid thereto, the same tooth 29 driving the latch 6 into the opening/closing position.
- a lockset according to the present invention further comprises a connection 37 between the electronic control unit 27 and a central server 36, the latter making it possible to control and store the individual accesses made into a plurality of doors provided with a lockset as above described.
- the invention achieves important advantages.
- the lockset according to the present invention exhibits, on the external side of the door, only one female USB connector 2 and a handgrip 24.
- the electrically operated lockset comprises a hardware, with independent management and control functions, fully embedded within a resin in the inner side of the door, said hardware being made inoperative upon any attempt of tampering with.
- the lockset uses an internal processor' s software that carries out a control of the password within the pen- drive, thereby allowing only the owner of the matrix pen- drive to enable further users to open and close the lockset in question.
