Definitions
- the invention relates to a baby bath, especially for use in a shower space, comprising a frame having an upper circumferential edge and at least three legs, and a flexible watertight liner attachable to the upper circumferential edge of the frame and capable of containing a volume of water in an operational position of the bath.
- Such baths for small children and babies are known in various embodiments, for example from US 3,799,228.
- This known bath also comprises a collapsible frame and a flexible watertight lining.
- the frame is made of tubing parts, wherein both the circumferential portion of the frame and the legs are collapsible, wherein the legs are rotatable with respect to the circumferential portion of the frame. This enables the frame to be collapsed to a small size.
- the top of the liner is folded over to form a cylindrically shaped sleeve for receiving the tubes. The liner sleeve is manipulated over the frame members during assembly of the bath.
- the object of the present invention is to provide a novel bath for children.
- the bath according to the invention is defined in the independent claims. Embodiments of the invention are the subject of the dependent claims.
- the legs of the frame are provided with a locking mechanism in order to improve the stability of the frame.
- This locking mechanism prevents the collapse of a frame leg when children are playing in, on, or around the bath and exert forces thereon which might result in collapse of one or more of the legs. This could lead to injuries to the children, which should be avoided of course as much as possible.
- a locking mechanism is integrated in the leg itself and is activated and released during unfolding and folding of the legs .
- No separate locking mechanism has to be actuated. If the locking movement of the leg with respect to the circumferential portion of the frame is taking place in upward direction, then the downward force on the circumferential portion during use of the bath will initiate or strengthen the locking action. Thus, if somebody has forgotten to lock the legs in position, the legs will automatically be locked if the liner is filled with water or when somebody exerts a downward force on the circumferential portion of the frame. This arrangement therefore leads to a very safe locking mechanism.
- the liner is adapted to be folded with its circumferential edge over the upper circumferential edge of the frame, the frame being provided with a releasable liner lock which is adapted to lock the liner in its position on the frame and to allow its release again.
- a releasable liner lock which is adapted to lock the liner in its position on the frame and to allow its release again.
- the liner can be attached and detached to and from the frame without disassembly thereof.
- the liner lock is integrated in the legs so that the liner is locked in the operational position of the frame by the legs due to the movement of the legs to their operational position. As a result, the unfolding of the legs automatically leads to a locking of the liner to the frame.
- connection means to connect the liner with the legs at a position spaced from the upper circumferential edge of the frame.
- the liner will be stretched when the legs are in their operational position, thereby avoiding wrinkles in the liner which would reduce the volume of the liner and increase the risk of the damage to the liner.
- the bath frame is made of moulded plastics, and consists mainly of a circumferential portion and legs, the circumferential portion being formed by a plurality of identical parts, and the legs, which are identical as well, are connected to the circumferential portion of the frame by accommodation between two adjacent identical parts of the circumferential portion.
- the bath frame comprises only two different main parts from which the frame is to be assembled, which reduces the number of injection moulds which require a substantial investment.
- the bath liner is provided with a drainage opening and with closure means for selectively opening and closing the drainage opening, the closure means comprising a rotatable element having a series of holes near its circumference, the element can be selectively rotated so as to bring the holes into and out of register with co-operating holes in a stationary part of the closure means.
- This provides an effective way of opening and closing the discharge opening and can be made with a small building height so as to prevent injuries on the children sitting or standing in the bath.
- FIG. 1 and 2 are a plan view and a side view, respectively, of the embodiment of the baby bath according to the invention.
- Fig. 3 is a sectional view along the line III-III in Fig. 1.
- Fig. 4 is a perspective exploded view of the bath of
- Figs. 5A-5D are enlarged perspective views of a part of the frame of the bath of Figs. 1-3, illustrating the unfolding and locking movements of a leg with respect to the circumferential portion of the frame.
- Fig. 6 is a further enlarged detail of the frame showing the connection between the leg and the circumferential portion of the frame.
- Fig. 7A-7D show perspective views of the frame and lines in four different positions, illustrating the movements of the legs of the frame from the collapsed condition of the frame to the unfolded, locked position of the frame, as is Fig. 5A - 5D.
- Fig. 8 shows detail VIII in Fig. 3 illustrating the attachment of the liner to the frame of the bath.
- Figs. 9A - 9B are perspective views of a portion of the frame, illustrating the locking of the liner with respect to the frame .
- Fig. 10 is and enlarged perspective, sectional view of a leg portion and liner portion for illustrating the connection between the liner and one of the legs.
- FIG. 1 - 3 show an embodiment of a collapsible bath, especially for children's use, e.g. when no fixed bath is available. This is for example the case if a house only includes a shower space and no bath. Then the collapsible bath according to the invention can be disposed on the floor of the shower space, for example on the floor or in a shower tray. However, it would also be possible to place the collapsible bath inside a fixed bath or outside, for example in the garden or on a camping ground.
- the bath according to the invention comprises a collapsible frame 1 and a liner 2 which can be fixed to the frame in such a manner that it is able to contain a volume of water in which one or more children may bath.
- the liner is made of flexible watertight material, such as polyester-polyurethane or any other (plastic) material that is suitable for containing the water.
- the frame 1 includes a circumferential portion 3 and a plurality of legs 4 depending therefrom.
- the embodiment shown comprises four legs 4 in order to obtain a good stability, but a larger or smaller number of legs is possible, depending on the case and on the structure of the legs 4.
- the legs 4 are of such structure to support an upper circumferential edge 5 of the frame 1 at a desired height above the floor, in order to support the circumferential edge 6 of the liner 2 at a level to obtain the desired depth of the bath, for example 20 cm. In that situation, the liner 2 will generally be supported by the floor, so that the liner 2 does not have to carry the weight of the water and child present in the bath.
- the legs 4 might be extendable to obtain different depths of the bath with different liners or could be extended by an extension part. In the present case the legs 4 are provided with rubber feet 7 on the lower ends to obtain an anti-slip facility.
- Fig. 4 shows that the circumferential portion 3 of the frame 1 is made up of four identical frame parts 8 which can be connected together to form the circumferential portion 3 of the frame and which then accommodate the legs 4 between each two frame parts 8.
- the frame parts 8 which are made of plastic, for example by blow, roto or injection moulding, can be clicked, screwed or welded to each other in order to be fixed to each other and moveably receive the legs 4.
- Figs. 5 and 6 show how a leg 4 is movably connected to the frame parts 8.
- the leg 4 has near its upper side on two circumferential ends a cam 9 which is elongated in longitudinal direction of the leg 4, such that the length of the cam, when viewed in longitudinal or height direction thereof, is greater than the length or width perpendicularly thereto.
- a recess 10 At each end of the frame part 8 that is formed a recess 10 to take up a portion of the leg 4 and the side wall of this recess 10 is provided with a key-hole shaped slot 11.
- This slot has an upper, vertical, narrow, straight locking slot portion 11' and a lower circular rotation portion H'' connected thereto.
- the cam 9 of the leg 4 fits into the slot 11 such that the length of the cam 9 is substantially equal to the diameter of the rotation portion H'' of the slot 11, whereas the width of the cam 9 is substantially equal to the width of the locking portion 11' of the slot 11. This enables the cam 9 to rotate within the rotation portion 11' and to translate within the locking portion 11' of the slot 11. The rotation will take place around an axis which is substantially parallel to the tangent of the circumferential edge 5 at this location.
- This shape of the slot 11 and cam 9 is used for enabling a movement of the legs 4 between a collapsed position in which they are almost parallel to the upper circumferential edge 5 of the frame 1 (Figs 5A and 7A) and an unfolded, locked position in which they stand substantially perpendicularly to the upper circumferential edge 5 of the frame 1 (Figs. 5D and 7D) .
- the cam 9 of the leg 4 is positioned within the rotation portion H'' of the slot 11 and when the leg is rotated, such that the cam 9 is aligned with the locking portion 11', the leg 4 is enabled to move upwardly with respect to the circumferential portion 3 of the frame 1 to a locked position in which a rotation of the leg 4 with respect to the circumferential portion 3 is disabled. Due to this vertical locking movement, the leg 4 is securely locked in its unfolded position, since almost al forces on the frame 1 will have a downward component which urges the cam 9 further into the locking portion 11' of the slot 11 thereby promoting the locking action.
- the legs 4 and circumferential portion 3 of the frame 1 may be provided with means that realisably hold the leg 4 in the locked position.
- the vertical sliding movement of the legs 4 is not only used to lock the legs 4 themselves in the locked position, but is also used to lock the upper edge of the liner 2 in its position around the upper circumferential edge 5 of the frame 1.
- Figs. 8 and 9 it is shown that there is formed a circumferential groove 12 in the outer side of the circumferential portion 3 of the frame 1, whereas the circumferential edge 6 of the liner 2 is provided with a thickened portion, for example formed by an elastic cord 14 or the like which is sewn or glued to the liner 2.
- the circumferential edge 6 of the liner 2 should be positioned such that this cord 14 is disposed in the groove 12. This facilitates the correct position of the liner 2 with respect to the frame 1. With this cord 14 positioned in the groove 12, the legs 4 may be moved to their locked position.
- a liner lock projection 15 extending upwardly and being positioned in front of the groove 12 when the legs 4 are in their locked position, thereby preventing the cord 14 of the liner 2 to leave the groove 12.
- the liner 2 is locked with respect to the frame 1 by means of the liner lock projections 15 of the legs 4 (cf . Fig. 8 and 9B) . If the legs are moved to their position in which they can rotate (Fig. 9A), the liner lock projections are moved away from the groove 12 and thereby release the groove and enable the cord 14 to leave the groove in order to remove the liner 2 from the frame 1, for example to clean the liner or replace it .
- Fig. 10 shows that the liner 2 is provided with a plurality of connection means in a form of a projection 17 fixed to the outer side of the liner 2, for example by means of gluing.
- the number of connection means 17 equals the number of legs 4 and the liner 2 should be positioned such with respect to the frame 1 that each projection 17 is positioned near a leg 4 and can be engaged with a counter part 18, for example a recess in the leg 4.
- This projection 17 of the liner 2 may be permanently connected to the leg 4, so both in the collapsed condition and in the unfolded, operational position of the frame.
- the purpose of the connection means 17 is to stretch the bottom of the liner 2 in the unfolded operational condition of the frame 1 so as to unwrinkle the liner and provide a smooth bottom of the bath before it is filled with water.
- Figs. 1 and 3 show that the liner 2 is further provided with a drainage opening covered by closure means including a stationary part 19 fixed to the liner and being provided with a plurality of holes 20 or the like, as well as a rotatable element 21, accommodated between the stationary part 19 and the liner 2 and carrying a knob 22 which is accessible through the stationary part 19.
- the knob 22 is provided to enable a user to operate the rotatable element 21 in order to selectively rotate it between an open position in which holes or openings 23 in the rotatable element 21 are in register with the holes 20 in the stationary part 19, and a closed position in which the holes 20 are closed by the rotatable element 21, for example by the portions between the holes 23.
- the stationary part 19 is flat and smooth so as to be unobtrusive.
- the invention provide a baby bath which is simple in structure and is easy to use, is small in collapsed condition and is very stable in unfolded operational condition.
- plan view shape of the frame and liner may be other than circular, for example rectangular, oval or the like.
