Description

TITLE: LOCKING AND FOLDING DEVICE FOR A WALKER Introduction
This invention relates to a locking and folding device for a collapsible walker, carriage or trolley. It comprises a first, forwardly directed part, comprising at least a first leg or a first pair of legs, and a second backwardly directed part, comprising at least a second leg or a second pair of legs, wherein at least said first, forwardly directed part is provided with wheels. Said first part and said second part are arranged for movement relative each other between an expanded position and a collapsed position.
Background of the invention
Elderly people and some physically disabled persons tend to have reduced physical ability and physical strength, especially in the hands. There are also some persons that are struck by cerebral infarction or other sufferings that affect physical ability and physical strength. People with reduced physical ability or reduced motor ability can benefit from aids like walkers, which can enable them to move with the aid of the walker to a greater extent than they would be able to without using a walker.
Some conventional walkers are rigid constructions that are not collapsible. However, most modern walkers are collapsible constructions, but the folding devices are manual solutions being complicated and bothersome in operation. The manner of operation can be difficult to understand for the user or his/hers assistants in such a way that the aid can be experienced as bothersome and impractical in use, and therefore being seldom used or not used at all. Thus, there is a risk that the aid intended to facilitate a more active lifestyle is felt to be of little benefit for the user.
Thus, a demand exists for a locking and folding device for collapsible walkers, carriages or trolleys wherein the locking and folding device is simple to operate and at the same time constitutes a simple mechanical design. A simple mechanical design could simplify production and reduce production time and production costs. A walker, carriage or trolley with a locking and folding device that is easy to operate, could also to a greater extent be useful and to the advantage and assistance for the user.
Background art
A locking and folding device for a walker that can be locked in a collapsed or expanded position by means of a fastening means as a bolt-and-nut connection is an example of a known solution. A disadvantage with these solutions is that tools are required to operate them. US 2 249 123, Foldable package carrier, describes a foldable trolley, comprising a first forwardly directed part with a first leg, a second backwardly directed part with a second leg, where all legs are provided with wheels, in which said first and said second parts are arranged to move relative each other, and can be used in a collapsed position and in an expanded position. The first leg is provided with a handle. Locking devices for locking the trolley in a collapsed position and in an expanded position are described. DE 10 2004 020 989, Gehwagen, describes a walker comprising a first forwardly directed part with a first pair of legs, a second backwardly directed part with a second pair of legs, wherein all legs are provided with wheels, in which the first part and the second part are arranged to move relative each other, and can be used in a collapsed position and in an expanded position. The first pair of legs is provided with handles. The second part is supported in the ends of a beam arranged perpendicularly, approximately in the middle of the first pair of legs. US 2003/0221715, Collapsible side wheeled walker, describes a collapsible walker with three legs.
Short summary of the invention
With this invention a locking and folding device for a collapsible walker, carriage or trolley has been developed, comprising a first, forward directed part, comprising at least a first leg or a first pair of legs, and a second, backwardly directed part that comprises at least a second leg or a second pair of legs , wherein at least the first, forwardly directed part is provided with wheels, and wherein the first part and the second part are arranged for movement relative each other between a collapsed position and an expanded position. The new and distinctive features of the locking and folding device according to the invention is that the first part and the second part are arranged for expansion and folding relative each other by a locking device connected to the first and second parts, wherein the locking device is provided with a release handle that in addition to releasing the locking device is further arranged for rotating the parts relative each other to a collapsed position by the same movement of the release handle. One of the major advantages is as follows: The walker shown in fig. 6 and 7 is provided with handles so that the user by applying a part of his/her body weight forces the forwardly directed legs and the backwardly directed legs of the walker apart and out to an expanded position.
Thus the user achieves an advantageous movement pattern when the walker is to be collapsed: The user stands in a normal operating position behind the walker, and can hold on to one of the handles with one hand, and grip the release handle with the opposite hand. When the release handle is pulled the backwardly directed legs of the walker will be forced by the spring to rotate in the same rotational direction as the direction one pulls the handle, and thereby co-operate to the collapse of the walker. A further advantage with this mode of operation and the pull direction is that one can then continue the movement and thereby lift the walker up from the ground without changing the grip.
Further advantages and features of the locking and folding device according to the invention are disclosed in the accompanying independent claims. The invention also comprises a further locking and folding device for a collapsible walker, carriage or trolley, comprising a first, forward directed part, comprising at least a first leg or a first pair of legs, and a second, backwardly directed part comprising at least a second leg or a second pair of legs, wherein at least the first part is provided with wheels, and wherein the first part and the second part are arranged for movement relative each other between a collapsed position and an expanded position.
This additional locking and folding device is characterised by that the first part and the second part are arranged for expansion and folding relative each other by means of a locking device connected to the first and second parts, wherein the locking device is provided with a release handle that, in addition to releasing the locking device, is arranged for rotating the first and second parts relative each other to an expanded position by the same movement of the release handle. Further advantages and features of the locking and folding device according to the invention are disclosed in the accompanying independent claims.

Detailed description of the invention
Reference is now made to fig. 1-3 where a cross-section through a possible embodiment of the locking and folding device according to the invention is shown, wherein a locking device 80 is shown in detail.
Fig. 1 shows a beam 5 with an inner profile 7 arranged within a hollow profile 6. The inner profile 7 is in this embodiment a hollow profile with a slot or a groove 20 in the longitudinal direction and with a mainly circular cross-section. The hollow profile 6 is in this embodiment a mainly U-shaped profile. A locking plate 10 is arranged enclosing parts of the circumference of the inner profile. The locking plate 10 is provided with a first slot 11a arranged for receiving one end 9a of an interlock pin 9 for locking in a first position and further provided with a second slot 11b arranged for receiving one end 9a of the interlock pin 9 for locking in a second position. The interlock pin 9 is arranged for movement through a combined guide and lock block 8. The guide and lock block 8 is fastened to the U-shaped hollow profile 6. When the interlock pin 9 enters one of the slots 11a, 11b, the hollow profile 6 is kept in position relative the inner profile 7. In this way the locking and folding device is kept in a locked position. The locking plate 10 may also comprise additional slots 11c, 11 d,..., in such a way that the locking and folding device can also be locked in an intermediate position between the first and the second position (for simplicity not shown in the figures).
In the embodiment of the invention wherein the first part 1 and the second part 2 are arranged for being moved apart against a spring resistance and locked in an expanded position, the insertion of the guide and lock block 8 in the first slot 11a corresponds to an expanded position and insertion of the guide and lock block 8 in the second slot 11b corresponds to a collapsed position. Fig. 1 shows the end 9a of the interlock pin 9 in engagement with the second slot 11b for locking of the profile parts that are holding the first and the second parts respectively in a collapsed position. Fig. 2 shows the interlock pin 9 in an intermediate position between the first slot 11a and the second slot 11b. Fig 3 shows the end 9a of the interlock pin 9 entered into the first slot 11a in such a way that the corresponding first and second parts 1 ,2 are in a locked, expanded position.
In the embodiment of the invention wherein the first part 1 and the second part 2 are arranged for being locked in a collapsed position, the first slot 11a can correspond to collapsed position and the second slot 11b can correspond to expanded position. Fig. 1 shows correspondingly the end 9a of the interlock pin 9 entered into the second slot 11b corresponding to the first and the second parts 1 ,2 with the legs in an expanded position. Likewise Fig. 2 shows the interlock pin 9 in an intermediate position between the first slot 11a and the second slot 11 b. Fig 3 shows correspondingly the end 9a of the interlock pin 9 in engagement with the first slot 11a rotated in such a manner that the first and the second parts 1 ,2 are in a collapsed position.
Further, it results from fig 1-3 that the interlock pin 9 can be moved in and out of a slot 11a, 11b,..., by means of a lever arm 13 on the combined guide and lock block 8. The lever arm 13 is connected to a handle 12, such that the lever arm 13 moves the interlock pin 9 in or out of engagement with the slots 11a, 11 b in the locking plate 10 by operating the handle 12.
In fig. 4 it is shown how the first and the second parts 1,2 may be supported in a bearing in the beam 5 by fastening the hollow profile 6 to a main joint 14 that rotatably holds the inner profile 7. The segment in fig. 4 shows the beam 5 with the inner profile 7 and the hollow profile 6 fastened in the main joint 14. In the example in fig. 4 the hollow profile 6 is fastened to the main joint 14 of the second, backwardly directed part 2 and O arranged for movement about the inner profile 7, in turn rotatably held in the main joint 14 of the first, forwardly directed part 1.
Fig. 5 shows a detail of a spring device 150, here a first torsion spring 15 that is arranged around at least a part of the inner profile 7 and which in its first end 15a is fastened to a flange 19a timely attached to the inner profile 7, and in its second end 15b fastened to a main joint 14a. Correspondingly a second spring 16 may be arranged on the opposite side of the inner pipe profile 7 with respect to the locking and folding device, wherein the second spring 16 is arranged around a portion of the inner profile 7 and wherein its first end 16a is fastened to a corresponding flange 19b of the inner profile 7 and its second end 16b fastened to a main joint of the other, backwardly directed part, holding the pipe profile 7 on the opposite side of the walker.
Reference is made to fig. 6-7, illustrating a walker provided with an embodiment of the locking and folding device according to the invention. The walker has a first, forwardly directed part 1 with a first leg 3a and a third leg 3b arranged a distance from each other and supported in a bearing in the first, forwardly directed part 1 in the main joints 14, 14b at each end 5a, 5b of the beam 5. The second backwardly directed part 2 comprises a second leg 4a and a fourth leg 4b arranged a distance from each other and supported in a bearing in the second, backwardly directed part 2 in the main joints 14, 14b at each end 5a, 5b of the beam 5. The first leg 3a and the second leg 4a are rotatably connected in the first main joint 14a in the first end 5a of the beam 5, and the third leg 3b and the fourth leg 4b are correspondingly rotatably connected in the second main joint 14b in the second, opposite end 5b of the beam 5. Each of the four legs 3a, 3b, 4a, 4b are preferably provided with wheels.
The walker shown in fig. 6 and 7 is further provided with two handles 18-18b, such that the user by applying weight on the handles 18a-18b thus forces the walkers first part 1 and the second part 2 out into an expanded position.
A considerable advantage of the walker with a locking device 80 according to the invention is then that the user achieves an advantageous movement pattern when the walker is to be collapsed: The user is standing in a normal operating position behind the walker, and can hold on to one of the handles 18a, 18b with one hand, and grip the release handle 12 with the opposite hand. When the release handle is pulled the backwardly directed part with the second pair of legs 4a, 4b will be forced by the spring 150 to rotate in the same rotational direction as the direction one pulls the handle, and thereby co-operate in the collapse of the walker. A further advantage with this mode of operation and the pull direction is that one can continue the movement and thereby lift the walker up from the ground without changing the grip.
In principle the locking device 80 may be arranged anywhere along the beam 5, and it can extend over the entire beam or parts of the beam 5. In fig. 6 and 7 the locking device 80 is arranged in conjunction with the beam 5 about halfway between the first pair of legs 3a, 3b and the second pair of legs 4a, 4b, but it might equally be arranged close to the first pair of legs 3a, 3b, or close to the second pair of legs 4a, 4b.
Generally, the invention concerns a locking and folding device for a collapsible walker, carriage or trolley, comprising a first, forwardly directed part 1 comprising at least a first leg 3a or a first pair of legs 3a, 3b, and a second backwardly directed part 2 comprising at least a second leg 4a or a second pair of legs 4a, 4b. At least the first part may be provided with wheels. The second part may also be provided with wheels. Preferably both the first part 1 and the second part 2 are provided with wheels. The first part 1 and the second part 2 are arranged for movement relative each other between a collapsed position and an expanded position. Even though the locking and folding device according to the invention is shown in an example for a walker, it may also be used for carriages or trolleys.
The first part 1 and the second part 2 are arranged for being expanded and folded relative each other by means of a locking device 80 in connection with the parts 1 ,2, and, wherein the locking device 80 comprises a release handle (12) that in addition to releasing the locking device 80 is arranged for rotating the parts 1 ,2 relative each other to a collapsed position by the same movement of the release handle 12.
The locking and folding device comprises in a further embodiment of the invention a spring device (150) arranged for being set in a tense or strained state by unfolding the first part (1) and the second part (2) relative each other and further arranged for allowing complete or partial folding of the first part (1) and the second part (2) relative each other when the locking device (80) is released. The locking device 80 may further be arranged for holding the parts 1,2 locked in a collapsed position or in an intermediate position between the expanded position and the collapsed position.
The backwardly directed, second part 2 may be moved relative the forwardly directed first part 1. Alternatively, the forwardly directed first part 1 may be moved relative the backwardly directed, second part 2.
The first part 1 may further comprise one or more handles 18 stiffly connected to the first leg 3a or the first pair of legs 3a, 3b, such that the first part 1 is arranged to allow a movement of the second part 2 relative the first part 1 to the locked, expanded position by applying weight on the handles 18, see example in fig. 6 and 7. In an embodiment of the invention the first and the second parts 1 ,2 are supported in bearings in the ends 5a, 5b by a horizontally arranged beam 5. The beam 5 comprises at least a hollow profile 6, e.g. a profile with a mainly U-shaped or L-shaped cross-section, which in each end 6a, 6b is firmly supported in a bearing in the second, backwardly directed part 2, and an inner profile 7, e.g. a profile with a mainly ring- shaped cross-section, which is arranged within the hollow profile 6 and that in each end 7a, b is fixedly supported in bearings in the first, forwardly directed part 1. Details of a possible embodiment of the locking and folding device are shown in fig. 1-3. It appears from the figures that the locking device 80 comprises at least one combined guide and lock block 8 for an interlock pin 9 that is rotatably arranged with the hollow profile 6 relative the inner profile 7. The inner profile 7 comprises at least a first slot 11a arranged for receipt of one end 9a of the interlock pin 9. An operating handle 12, e.g. in the shape of a stick, grip or handle, is connected to a lever arm 13 for the guide and lock block 8 that is arranged for movement of the interlock pin 9 for engagement with the first slot 11a, for locking in the expanded position of at least of the first leg 3a relative the second leg 4a. If the first part and the second part comprises the first pair of legs 3a, 3b and the second pair of legs 4a-4b, the first and the second pair of legs 3a-3b, 4a-4b may be arranged for being locked relative each other in an expanded position by engagement of the interlock pin 9 in the first slot 11a correspondingly. In fig. 3 it is illustrated that the interlock pin 9 enters the slot 11a.
Fig. 1-3 shows further that the inner profile 7 further may comprise a second slot 11b. The locking and folding device according to the invention may then be lockable in collapsed position, at least by the first leg 3a and the second leg 4a being lockable relative each other in a collapsed position by engagement of the interlock pin in the second slot 11b. If the first part and the second part comprises the first pair of legs 3a, 3b and the second pair of legs 4a, 4b, the first and the second pair of legs 3a-3b, 4a-4b may be lockable relative each other in a collapsed position by engagement of the interlock pin 9 in the second slot 11b correspondingly. In fig. 1 it is illustrated that the interlock pin enters the slot 11b. The locking device 80 can advantageously further comprise a locking plate or locking sleeve 10 arranged about parts of, or the entire inner profile 7. The locking plate 10 comprises at least the first slot 11a, and additional slots may be arranged in the locking plate 10 such that the first part and the second part can be locked in several positions. If the first part and the second part are to be locked in a collapsed position the locking plate or locking sleeve 10 may comprise a second slot 11b arranged for receipt of the end 9a of the interlock pin 9. The second slot 11b may be arranged such that at least the first part 1, comprising the first leg 3a or the first pair of legs 3a-3b, and the second part 2, comprising the second leg 4a or the second pair of legs 4a-4b, are lockable relative each other in a collapsed position by engagement of the interlock pin 9 in the slot 11b comprised in the locking plate 10. Fig. 1 -3 show an embodiment of the locking and folding device wherein the locking plate encloses parts of the circumference of the inner profile 7.
In a preferred embodiment, the first forwardly directed part 1 comprises a first pair of legs 3a, 3b comprising a first leg 3a and a third leg 3b arranged with distance from each other and supported in bearings in the first, forwardly directed part 1 in a main joint 14a, 14b in each end 5a, 5b of the beam 5, and the second backwardly directed part 2 comprises a second pair of legs 4a, 4b comprising a second leg 4a and a fourth leg 4b arranged with a distance from each other and supported in a bearing in the second, backwardly directed part 2 in the main joints 14a, 14b in each end 5a, 5b of the beam 5. In this embodiment the first leg 3a and the second leg 4a are connected in the first main joint 14a in the first end 5a of the beam 5, and the third leg 3b and the fourth leg 4b are connected in the second main joint 14b in the second, opposite end 5b of the beam 5. Each of the four legs 3a, 3b, 4a, 4b may also be provided with wheels. One example of such an embodiment is shown in fig 6 and 7, wherein the locking and folding device is used in a collapsible walker. In fig. 4 it is shown one example of how the first and the second parts 1 ,2 may be supported in the beam 5 by fastening of the hollow profile 6 and the inner profile 7 tD the main joint 14. The section in fig. 4 illustrates the beam 5 with the inner profile 7 and the hollow profile 6 fastened to the main joint 14a. In the example shown in fig. 4 the hollow profile 6 is fastened to the main joint 14 to the second part 2 and arranged for movement about the inner profile 7, which in turn is fastened in the main joint 14 to the first part 1. The inner profile 7 may, in a simplified embodiment of the invention in itself constitute the spring device 150, e.g. by letting the entire or a portion of the inner profile 7 comprise elastic parts. In a preferred embodiment the spring device 150 comprises at least a first spring 15 preferably arranged around a portion of the inner profile 7 and fastened in its first end 15a in the beam 5 or in the main joint 14, and in its second end 15b to the inner profile 7. The spring device 150 may further comprise at least a second spring 16 preferably arranged around a portion of the inner profile 7 and fastened in its first end 16a to the beam 5 or to the main joint 14, and in its second end 16b to the inner profile 7, such that a spring 15, 16 is arranged on each side of the locking and folding device. The first spring 15 and the second spring 16 may be e.g. coil springs, torsion springs, leaf springs, needle springs, massive elastic springs, hydraulic springs, pneumatic springs or a combination of two or more such springs.
The interlock pin 9 may be provided with an auxiliary spring 17 (not shown in the drawings) fastened to the guide and lock block 9 and arranged to be set in a strained state, such that the interlock pin 9 when operated is arranged to be driven into a slit in the inner profile 7 or a slit in the locking plate or the locking sleeve 10 by means of the auxiliary spring 17.
A separate embodiment of the locking and folding device according to the invention may be arranged for being forced against the spring force and locked in a collapsed position, in such a way that the walkers forwardly directed part and backwardly directed part will be pushed out to an operating position upon release of the spring device by pulling the handle 12. Thus, the invention also comprises a locking and folding device for a collapsible walker, carriage or trolley, comprising a first, forwardly directed part 1 , comprising at least a first leg 3a or a first pair of legs 3a, 3b, and a second, backwardly directed part 2 comprising at least a second leg 4a or a second pair of legs 4a, 4b , where at least the first, forwardly directed part 1 is provided with wheels, and wherein the first part and the second part are arranged for movement relative each other between an expanded position and a collapsed position.
Correspondingly, the first part 1 and the second part 2 are arranged for expansion and folding relative each other by means of a locking device 80 connected to the first and second parts 1 ,2 and wherein the locking device 80 is arranged for rotating the first and second parts 1 ,2 relative each other to a collapsed position by the same movement of the release handle. The locking and folding device comprises in a further embodiment of the invention a spring device 150 arranged for being set in a strained or loaded state by folding of the first part 1 and the second part 2 relative each other and further arranged to cause complete or partial expansion of the first part 1 and the second part 2 relative each other when the locking device 80 is released. The locking device 80 may further be arranged for holding the first part 1 and the second part 2 locked in an expanded position or in an intermediate position between a collapsed and expanded position.
The second part 2 further comprises one or more handles 18 that are rigidly connected with the second leg 4a or the second pair of legs 4a, 4b such that the 1 second part 2 is arranged for allowing movement of the first part 1 relative the second part 2 to a locked, collapsed position by applying weight on the handles 18.
A locking and folding device according to the invention for a walker can also be considered used in other objects than walkers wherein it may be convenient to be able to fold and put them away. Examples of such objects may be prams or trolleys for transportation of products in stores or between a store and a parking lot, vehicle or residence.
The locking and folding device according to the invention has several advantages that, amongst others, include a simple principle for folding and expansion. Furthermore, it comprises a simple and robust locking device, and the mechanical construction is, in a preferred embodiment arranged to be concealed.
